Happiness from Shortened Pants
Rev. Hong Sik Kim
Long time ago, there were a rich and a poor scholar who each had three daughters. One day the rich met the poor scholar who had three daughters with deep filial respects and good sibling relationships. He was wearing short pants that came above his knees. When asked why, the poor scholar began to unfolded the story of his three daughters. He told his daughters that his pants were too long and needed to be shortened. His second daughter got up early in the morning and shortened the pants in place of her older sister who sews all day. Then the oldest daughter woke up early not to disturb the youngest and shortened the pants. And then, the youngest daughter got up early to shorten the pants in place of her second sister who does housework all day long. After hearing this, the rich scholar did the same and told his three daughters, “My pants are too long. Please shorten it for me.” However, when he got up in the morning and found his pants the same. The first daughter thought “Shouldn’t the second sister do it since she doesn’t do much work?” The second daughter thought, “This is for the youngest sister to do”, and the youngest thought “This is for olderest sisters to do.” So, no one shortened the father’s pants in the old story.
Shortened pants are nothing to brag about, but the poor scholar was happy, and the rich scholar was envious. The result wasn’t what he expected but it was not a problem. Instead it made him happy. We always look for good results and think it is better to have more comfort than others. However, we realize that it is the good relationship that supersedes circumstances to create happiness.
This was experienced by the early churches. Corinthian church was rich and had many gifts. Macedonian church was exact opposite. It would seem more obvious for the rich church to give more offering and joyous, but that was not the case. Paul challenged by telling the story of Macedonian church. “Out of the most severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity.”(2Cor 8:2) The joy of Macedonian church was in sharing and serving.
Sometimes being considerate of others may seem foolish. People in the world saw the cross as being the most foolish. “Why would he suffer and die for others?” But Jesus took that path with joy. We received salvation by this grace, and this is the motivation for eternal hope when things are difficult. I believe we can get through this difficult season of Coronavirus with joy through Cell meetings. Continue to share love through Cell meetings. For those who do not belong to a Cell group, join and enjoy the fulness of joy through even in tribulation and poverty
