(It is your attitude, more than your aptitude, that will determine your altitude.)
Your Attitude Determines Your Altitude
Rev. Bryan Kim
Like ‘ah’ is different from ‘uh’, although the work may be the same, there are wide range of attitudes in how we do work. We can grasp a person’s character by an action or a word, and their polite greeting and the manner in which they extend their handshake can reveal the person’s warm personality. Sometimes we speak of first impression, whether good or bad, as trace of life experiences can be found from attitudes and facial expressions. As many as there are people in the world, there is variety of personalities. In researching for leadership, we discover that there are important characteristics that are displayed by their attitude, posture, and words that cannot be dismissed. Jesus rebuked His disciples James and John when they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?” (Luke 9:54b) when they were not welcomed in a Samaritan town. Obviously, He was rebuking the two disciples’ attitudes. It is a scene where you can see their attitudes by their words. How they were even nicknamed ‘sons of thunder’ (Mark 3:17)? I encounter a lot of people with different personalities as I meet and work with them in the ministry. Aside from being different, time to time, I come across people who are impolite in their words and attitudes.
Motivational speaker Zig Ziglar said, “It is your attitude, more than your aptitude, that will determine your altitude.” His opinion is that ability to climb high does not depend on the muscles that can jump high, but it is the attitude of daily exercise that helps strengthen that ability. Consequently, people with good attitude become leaders and people who speak kindly will receive leaderships to lead a community. It is said when you speak kindly, you will be spoken to kindly. Knowing this fact, there are still people who will twist their conversation. That person’s heart is probably twisted. The Lord demanded we even forgive seventy times seven. This is so that our attitude doesn’t become twisted. Our children’s ability depends on the capability of each individual. I don’t remember rebuking my children (I raised four kids) on their school grades or their sports ability. What parent doesn’t want their children to do well? I am no exception. But, what I know with confidence is that their attitude is more important than their ability or aptitude. On the other hand, I never overlook when my children speak disrespectfully or have a prideful attitude. If this is important in parenting, then it is more important for church members to speak kindly and have good attitudes. I pray that you will receive much grace today to have humble attitudes and to speak kindly.
