Church and Hospital

Rev. Bryan Kim

Pharisees and Scribes saw Jesus eating with tax collectors who have been branded sinners and asked Jesus’ disciples, “How can your teacher eat with such people?” To eat together means that you are friends and have a relationship of sharing and learning from each other. Like parents warning their children not to make bad friends, after seeing Jesus eat with sinners, Scribes are reprimanding Him that He is one with those that should be quarantined from society. In hearing the conversation, Jesus gave us Words over 2000 years ago, which cannot be erased in our minds, even today. “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” The reason this hits us hard today is because we have been called out on our responsibility as Christians to be the light and salt of the world.

I read a writing contributed by Dr. Sungjoo Hwang, Director of Korea Hospital of Love. He wrote this article while doing relief work in Lesbos Island off of Turkey where there is a concentration of refugees from Africa since Europe no longer accepts refugees due to coronavirus scare. The refugees were avoiding Korean volunteers and asking if they were checked for coronavirus. He felt the pain of refugees of abandonment and no care.

Worldwide, 95 countries are prohibiting or limiting entry into their countries. Even the refugees are avoiding Koreans. Those that have confirmed case of coronavirus are branded as sinners of our time. In a way, those images of medical volunteers serving regardless of infection are like image of Jesus with sinners. In that respect, church is like a spiritual clinic for sinners to be treated and healed. They say that hospitals in Korea are running short of quarantine rooms for confirmed patients. I wonder if church should be spiritual quarantine room. It’s fortunate in this unfortunate situation that Korea’s fatality from coronavirus is currently at 0.2%, slightly higher than that of seasonal flu but lower than that of China’s 3.8%, Italy’s 3.2%, and Japan’s 2.1% (@ Dr. Sungjoo Hwang). However, what’s really scary is the fatality rate of sin. It is 100% death. Church is where these serious patients come. Church is not a resort for good and kind people but it is like emergency room for those infected with virus that is 100% fatal with symptoms of wicked personality, crude words, serious jealousy, inferiority complex, and greed that is invisible. Doctors in hospital cannot run away in fear of infection. Church needs spiritual doctors to serve sinners. Am I a sinner that needs to be treated? Or Am I a spiritual doctor, treated and healed, who ought to serve others?
