우리는 누구나 기원, 출발점에 대해 상당히 관심을 갖는 경향이 있습니다. 사람을 처음 만나 얘기하다 보면 자연스럽게 그 사람의 ‘기원’(?)에 대해 관심을 갖게 됩니다. 같은 고향 출신에, 같은 학교 출신 이기라도 할라치면 금세 친해지곤 합니다. 조금 더 가까워지면 이제는 나이가 궁금해 집니다. 호형호제하는 사이가 되려면 반드시 필요한 단계입니다. 요즘 속된 표현으로 “쯩을 깐다”는 말이 있는데, 서로의 나이를 확인하자는 말입니다. 이것도 결국 자신의 기원을 필터 없이 밝히겠다는 의미입니다. 이때 출생의 비밀까지는 아니더라도 출생신고에 대한 비밀이 드러나기도 합니다. “원래 나이는 두 살 많은데…” 하면서 말입니다.

새 직원을 뽑을 때도 어김없이 이력서를 통해 그 사람의 기원(학력이나, 경력)을 확인합니다. 우리 회사에 적당한 사람인지를 인터뷰하기 전에 미리 예단할 수 있는 근거가 되기 때문입니다. 교회에서도 교역자를 찾을 때, 신앙 배경을 살피는 것이 필수가 되는 것을 보면, 그 사람의 신앙의 기원을 거슬러 올라가 파악하는 것은 동역에 안정감을 주기 때문일 것입니다.

캘리포니아에서 자주 일어나는 지진이나, 산불의 경우도 그렇습니다. 왜 이런 일이 우리가 사는 지역에서 자주 일어나는지 관심이 생깁니다. 산불 피해로 탁한 공기를 마시며 생활한 지 몇 주가 지나면서, 산불의 기원에 대해 더욱 궁금해집니다. 늘 이때가 되면 어김없이 일어나는 산불을 예방하려면 방화인지, 자연발화인지 원인을 확실히 알아야 할 것입니다.

벌써 6개월을 넘기고 있는 코비드 19 팬데믹 상황도 그렇습니다. 전 세계적으로 감염자 수가 3천만 명에 이르고 (미국만 약 7백만 명) 사망자 수만 백만에 이르게 한 코비드 19 바이러스로 인한 질병을 처음에는 우한폐렴이라 불렀습니다. 우한발 즉, 우한에서 시작된 바이러스라는 말입니다. 정치적인 이유에서인지는 모르지만, 이제는 더 이상 진원지 명칭이 들어간 이 말을 쓰지 않습니다. 세계적 유행병(팬데믹)이 된 상황에 어쩌면 그 기원이 더는 별 의미가 없어졌기 때문일 수도 있습니다. 이제는 근원을 차단한다고 해결될 일이 아니라, 감기처럼 스스로 예방에 최선을 다하고 조심하는 수밖에 없게 되었습니다.

그러나, 이러한 팬데믹 상황이라고 해서 그 기원에 무관심하면 안 되는 것이 한 가지 있습니다. 우리가 어디서 왔고, 어디서부터 잘못되었는지를 아는 것은 잊지 말아야 할 것입니다. 죄가 팬데믹이 되어 버린 이 상황에서 우리는 하나님에게서 왔고, 죄라는 팬데믹을 해결하기 위해 예수님이 오셨다는 사실은 결코 잊어서는 안 되는 한 가지입니다. 확진자 한 사람이 나와도 이렇게 난리인데, ‘죄인’으로 확진된 나에 대해서는 무방비로 노출되어 있는 듯한 방심이 오늘도 우리를 더욱 위험하게 합니다.

Origin

People tend to be very interested in the origin or starting point of things. When meeting someone for the first time, naturally we become interested in their ‘origin’(?). When you discover that he/she is from your hometown or attended the same school, you immediately bond with that person. When you get to know people, you become curious about their age: this is a process necessary to become close. There is a frequently used expression “lay it down” (Korean expression) which means to confirm each other’s age: this means revealing yourself to someone without filtering. This is when your little secret about birth registration, maybe not the secret of your birth, is often revealed. Such things as “I am actually two years older…”.

When selecting new employees, you confirm their origins (school, experience) through their resumes: this is a basis that will help you to predict about a person prior to interview to see if that person is a right fit for your company. When a church searches for a pastor, you have to research a candidate’s religious background. As you trace back on the origin of his faith, you feel secure in working with the candidate.

It’s same with earthquakes and wildfires that often occur in California. We become interested in knowing why this happens so often where we live. It’s been about a week since we have been breathing unhealthy air due to wildfires. We become curious about the origins of these fires. In order to prevent wildfires, which often occur during this time, we need to know whether they are caused by arson or natural occurrences.

This pandemic situation with Covid 19, which is now going on over 6 months, is the same. Total number of the infected in the world is 30 million (7 million just in the U.S.). This Covid 19 that caused close to a million deaths was first called Wuhan Pneumonia. It means this virus began in Wuhan. Perhaps it’s due to political reasons, but it is no longer named after its origin. Maybe because it has become a pandemic that the origin no longer has much meaning. This situation is not something that will be resolved by blocking the source, but by taking preventative measures like flu.

However, there is one thing that we cannot be indifferent about, just because it has become a pandemic. Where we came from and where we have gone wrong are things that we should never forget. Sin has become a pandemic. We should never forget that Jesus came to resolve this pandemic called sin. It becomes a big deal to find an infected person, but to be off guard, exposed, and defenseless is more of danger to us, who has been confirmed infected as ‘sinners’.
