미스터 트롯에 이어 한국에서 선풍적인 인기를 끌고 있는 트로트 대회를 보면서 저는 심사위원들의 평가를 흥미롭게 듣습니다. 그중 제일 많이 나오는 말이 기본기가 잘 돼 있다는 평가입니다. 반대로 가장 많이 등장하는 악평은 노래 부르는 버릇이 잘못 들었다는 말입니다. 한 마디로 노래 부르는 태도가 좋고, 나쁘다는 평가라고 할 수 있습니다. 동기유발 강사 지그 지글러(Zig Ziglar)씨의 유명한 말이 있습니다. “당신의 태도가 당신의 고도를 결정한다.” 성경 말씀은 아니지만, 성경적 가치를 적용하여 충분히 신앙적인 슬로건으로 내세울 수 있다고 믿습니다. 태도가 좋아야 구원을 받는 것은 아닙니다. 그러나 믿음의 태도가 우리의 신앙이 성숙해가고, 그리스도의 장성한 분량이 충만에 이르는데 결정적인 역할을 하는 것임을 부인할 수 없습니다. 결코 짧지 않은 저의 30년 담임목회의 삶 속에 수많은 성도님들을 만나고, 다양한 분들과 함께 사역을 해오면서 터득되는 믿음의 비밀이 바로 ‘태도’입니다. 어떤 분은 은사도 정말 많고, 공부도 많이 한 재목인데, 복음을 위해 태울 불을 붙일 수가 없습니다. 그 이유를 한마디로 말하자면 태도가 불량하기 때문입니다. 교만한 고자세, 다 통달한 것 같이 말하는 어투, 심지어 그 태도는 얼굴 표정에서 조차 읽힙니다. 남부럽지 않은 조건을 모두 갖추고 있지만, 믿음의 태도가 좋지 않아서 신앙이 자라지 못하고, 장애물 경기를 하다가 넘어져 있는 모습으로 세월을 보내는 안타까운 신자들도 간혹 만나봅니다.
고 손인식 목사님의 고별 설교가 지금도 기억납니다. 그때 제가 영어로 통역을 했기에 더 자세히 기억이 납니다. 목사님의 마지막 목회 총정리 메시지였다고 해도 과언은 아닐 것입니다. 당시는 평범한 설교였다고 생각했는데, 지금 생각하니 목회의 엑기스를 담은 유언과도 같은 말씀이었습니다. 데살로니가전서 5:16-18을 본문으로 말씀을 전하시면서 우리에게 늘려야 할 것이 있고, 줄여야 할 것이 있다고 하셨습니다. 불필요한 말을 줄이고, 대신 기도를 늘려라! 내 생각을 주장하는 인본주의를 줄이고, 하나님 중심으로 살아라! 역시 믿음의 비밀은 태도에 있음을 유언처럼 남기신 것입니다.
새해를 열면서 갖는 엘리야 특별새벽기도회는 항상 그 해의 모토를 주제로 잡습니다. 지속되는 팬데믹 상황과 닫혀 있는 현장예배가 우리가 넘어야 할 높이입니다. 어떻게 하면 신앙의 고도를 끌어올리며, 우리 앞에 버티고 있는 이 장애물을 뛰어넘을 수 있을까요? 올해는 외부 강사 없이 제가 말씀을 전합니다. 말씀의 칼로 우리의 못된 태도를 가르고, 하나님이 기뻐하시는 믿음의 태도로 신앙의 고도를 높이는 새해가 되기를 진심으로 바랍니다.
Your attitude determines your altitude

As I watch Korea’s sensational Trot Competition, continuation of Mr. Trot show, I enjoy listening to judges’ comments. The most comments made by judges are that singers have good foundation. On the flip side, the most negative comments are that they have developed bad habits in singing. In other words, this is an evaluation of whether singer’s attitude is good or bad. There is a famous comment made by motivational speaker, Zig Ziglar. “Your attitude determines your altitude.” This is not from Bible, but I think it applies biblical values. It could even be used as a slogan for believers. You don’t receive salvation just through good attitude. However, you can’t deny that attitude of faith is a decisive factor in determining your growth and fullness of maturity in Christ. I have served as a senior pastor for 30 years, and it is by no means short. Along the way, I have met numerous people, and served in ministries with many different people. What I have discovered is that secret of faith is in their attitudes. Some people, even with many gifts and higher education to be a headliner, just don’t have what it takes to set them on fire for the gospel. The reason is simply that they lack in attitude. You can read their attitudes of conceit in their posture, speaking as though they know everything, and even in their facial expressions. Time to time I meet believers who have everything, but their faith does not grow because of their attitudes. It’s frustrating to watch them spend their lives in a fallen state, unable to jump over the hurdle before them.
I am still reminded of late Pastor Sohn’s farewell message. I remember it well because I did the English translation. It’s probably not an exaggeration to say that the message was a final summary of his ministry. At the time, I thought it was a normal sermon. Now, thinking back, it was a message of extracting his last will in testament. He spoke from 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18. He said that we have things that we need to increase, and things that we need to decrease. Reduce unnecessary talk and, in its place, increase your prayer! Decrease humanistic way of making your thoughts known and live a God-centered life! He told us, like a last will in testament, that secret of faith is in our attitudes.
New Year’s motto has always been the theme of Elijah Early Morning Prayer meeting. The heights we need to jump over are this continuing pandemic and in-person worship closure. How can we increase altitude of our faith and jump over the hurdles that stand before us? This year I will speak without invited speakers. It is my desire that this New Year will be a year that God will rejoice as we increase our altitude of faith with attitude of faith by cutting through our bad attitudes with swords of truth
