한국 어느 교회 홈페이지에 나온 광고입니다. 모두들 온라인으로 예배를 드리는 가운데, 기독교의 최대 명절인 부활절에 함께 모일 수 없으니 연기하겠다는 광고였습니다. 우리 교회도 3월 초 온라인으로 예배를 전환하면서 부활절에는 다시 모일 수 있으려나 하는 막연한 기대를 가졌었는데, 갈수록 힘들어지는 상황을 지켜볼 수밖에 없는 것이 참으로 안타깝습니다. 명절에는 사람들이 모여야 명절 분위기가 납니다. 함께 모인 이들의 오가는 대화와 웃음소리, 장이 들어서고, 여기저기 세일 싸인이 보이고, 선물을 사려는 인파가 몰리고, 집집마다 음식을 같이 만들어 먹으며, 거리마다 들리는 음악 소리에 사람들의 떠들썩한 흥겨움이 있어야 하는데, 한산한 거리에 불 꺼진 상점들, 인기척 하나 없이 가끔 바람에 휴지가 굴러다니는 유령의 거리에서는 명절을 지킬 수 없을 것입니다. 캘리포니아도 앞으로 2주간은 시장도 가지 말고 집에 있으라고 권고하는 이때에 우리도 부활절을 연기할까 생각했었습니다. 그러나, 한 주만 기다리면 된다면 모를까 기약없이 악화되어 가는 코로나 사태는 우리의 명절도 무색하게 만들어 버렸습니다. 저는 이 날을 기억하며 남은 생애를 살려고 맘먹었습니다. 하나님 앞에 함께 모여 예배드리고 싶은 이토록 간절한 우리의 마음을, 우리의 소망이신 예수님의 부활을 함께 축하하며 모이지 못해 너무나도 슬펐던 이 마음을 결코 잊지 않을 것입니다. 그래서 오늘, 우리는 온라인으로 그 어느 때보다 더욱 단단히 뭉칠 것입니다. 가정마다 울리는 찬양의 소리가 거리로 뛰어나와 부르는 찬양보다 더 큰 함성이 되어 울려 퍼지도록 찬양할 것 이며, 온라인 접속이 마비되더라도 주님을 향한 우리의 사랑은 폭죽이 되어 하늘로 쏘아 올려져 그 어떤 불꽃놀이보다 아름답게 밤하늘을 수 놓도록 최선을 다할 것입니다.

모임은 연기되었지만, 부활절 축제는 진행형입니다. 오늘, 영상 앞에 모여있는 우리 가정은 일당백 일당천 입니다. 베델의 가정들은 영광스러운 하나님의 군대를 이루어 말씀과 기도로 무장하여 코로나 바이러스 사태를 극복하고, “넉넉히 이기는 자(more than conquerors)”로 일어설 것입니다. TV는 매일, 시시각각으로 코로나 바이러스로 인한 사망자의 숫자를 기록 경신하듯 올리는 이 우울한 시기에, 부활의 소망이 더욱 빛이 나도록 다시 사는 생명의 메시지를 나눕시다. 그 어느 때 보다 사랑과 격려로 연결된 부활절로 기억되도록, 주일 영상뿐 아니라 매일 나가는 아침 영상 메시지 및 자녀들을 위한 공동기도문, 교회를 위해 함께 기도하는 <두드림>, 자녀들을 위해 제작, 공급되는 영상 메시지 등에 서로 긍정 댓글을 열심히 달아주며 마음을 같이 하고 있음을 보여줍시다. 오늘, 이 부활절이 우리 가정과 교회의 영적 부흥으로 이어지는 최대의 명절로 기억되도록 합시다. 사랑하는 베델 성도님들께 Happy Easter! 진심으로 부활의 영광과 소망을 나눕니다.

Postponing Easter

This announcement was posted on website of a church in Korea. While everyone is worshiping online and we cannot gather together, the announcement was that this Easter, the biggest Christian holiday, will be postponed. Even our church, since moving to online worship at the beginning of March, had a small expectation of being together on Easter. However, it is frustrating to see the situation worsening. Being together makes holidays special. The laughter of being together, markets with sale signs and people coming in droves to buy gifts, families coming together to cook and share meals, and streets filled with music and excitement of people is what holiday is. But, it doesn’t feel like a holiday when our streets are empty, store lights turned off, no sign of people except for an occasional trash tumbling in the wind like a ghost town. I also thought about postponing Easter as we are at a time when all Californians are warned not to go to market for the next two weeks. The thought of what if it does not end in one week, as it continues to worsen without end in sight, has made our holiday colorless. I will remember this day for the rest of my life. The sadness of not being able to gather to worship God with our hearts and celebrate our hope, the resurrected Jesus, will never be forgotten. Therefore, we will bind together even more so via online. Each family will praise and shout loud enough to hear on the streets. Even if online connection gets parallelized, we will do our best to express our love for God like explosion that embroiders the sky even more beautiful than fireworks.

Our physical gathering may have been postponed, but the Easter celebration will continue. May the power of our families gathered in front of online worship today be a hundred, a thousand-fold. Our Bethel family is like God’s glorious army, equipped in Word and Prayer to overcome Coronavirus, and will rise as “more than conquerors”. In this depressing time as the death toll is announced on TV every hour, let’s share the message of life that our hope of resurrection will shine even brighter. Let’s show our hearts of solidarity and remember this Easter for love and encouragement like no other times through not only Sunday video messages but also through daily morning messages, prayers for our children, prayers for our church , children’s video messages, and through your posted message chains. Let’s make this Easter a biggest spiritual revival for our families and church to remember. To our beloved Bethel family, with glory and hope of resurrection, I wish you Happy Easter!
