무슨 일을 해도, 시작이 있고 끝이 있습니다. 기업에도 시무식이 있고 종무식이 있는 것을 보면, 우리 모두에게 시작과 마무리는 중요한 것 같습니다. 베델교회에서도 저의 스케줄은 연초보다는 연말이 더 바빴던 것 같습니다. 연말마다 각 사역팀이 마무리하는 모임들로 바쁘게 돌아갑니다. 유종의 미를 거두는 것이 중요하기 때문일 것입니다. 이제 새해가 시작되면서 우리들의 소원과 꿈을 나누며 “새해 복 많이 받으세요”라고 인사하는 것은 또한 시작에 그 중요한 의미를 두기 때문입니다. 시작이 반이라는 속담이 있듯이, 그만큼 모든 일의 시작은 전체를 품는 상징적인 의미가 있습니다. “될성부른 나무는 떡잎부터 알아본다”는 속담도 시작의 중요성을 시사합니다. 떡잎만 보아도 나중에 성장해서 만들어질 나무를 짐작할 수 있기 때문입니다. 그래서 새해를 시작하며 베델교회는 엘리야 특별 새벽기도를 하며, 한 해 동안 만들어갈 나무의 떡잎을 결정합니다. 그리고, 베델교회의 전통은 새해마다 주제곡을 작사 작곡하여 일 년 내내 결단의 찬양으로 하나님께 올립니다. 새해 모토와 함께 주제곡이 담고 있는 하나님을 향한 우리의 소원과 기도의 제목이 담
겨 있기 때문입니다.

1965년 12월 16일, 우주선 제미니(Gemini) 6호를 타고 있던 월터 쉬라 (Walter Schirra)와 토머스 스태퍼드 (Thomas Stafford) 두 우주인은 다른 우주선 제미니 7호와의 랑데부라는 역사적 미션을 성공적으로 수행한 후, 쉬라는 갑자기 하모니카를 꺼내 들고 크리스마스 캐럴을 연주하기 시작하고, 스태퍼드는 방울 밴드를 흔들며 장단을 맞추었다고 합니다. 이것을 지켜보고 있던 NASA 직원들은 감격하며, 최초로 사람이 우주에서 연주한 곡으로 기념하며, 그때 연주한 하모니카와 방울 밴드를 지금도 워싱턴 D.C 항공우주박물관 Air and Space Museum에 전시해 놓고 있습니다. 두 악기가 박물관에 보관된 것은 신세계 우주를 향한 인류의 출발점에 상징적인 의미가 있기 때문입니다. 그 옛날 신대륙이 강국의 정복욕으로 각축장이 되었던 것을 생각하면, 우주 공간을 향한 첫걸음은 전쟁과 싸움보다는 크리스마스 캐럴로 상징되는 평화의 메시지이기를 바라는 것이겠지요.

올해의 모토는 “더 깊이, 더 높이 Go Deeper, Go Higher!”입니다. 새해 첫 주간 진행될 엘리야 특별 새벽기도는 항상 한 해의 열매를 가름할 수 있는 영적 떡잎을 심는 시간입니다. 우주를 향해 인류가 처음 연주했던 캐럴처럼, 새해를 향한 우리의 노래는 [더 깊이, 더 높이]입니다. 이 꿈을 가지고 우리는 새해를 뛸 것입니다. 겸손히 엎드리는 낮은 자리에서, 하나님의 영광이 우리 가운데 높이 임하는 목표로 믿음의 날개를 펼 것입니다. 한 번도 가보지 않은 새해를 향한 성도님들의 노래를 담아, 힘껏 불러 봅시다.

First Song for the New Year

Everything has a beginning and an end. Starting and finishing is im portant to all of us as we have ceremonies for initiation and closure. Even at Bethel Church, my schedule seems busier at the end of the year than at the beginning. Every ministry is busy with team closures. This is because having a beautiful closure is important. As we begin a new year, we share our hopes and dreams. We greet each other with “Have a Blessed New Year”. This greeting places importance of begin ning. Like people say, starting is half the battle. Starting places sig nificant meaning in everything we do. An old proverb, “A great tree can be recognized even from a seedling” also suggests importance of beginning. Just by looking at a seedling, one could expect what kind of a tree it will grow up to be. As we begin a new year, Bethel Church will have Elijah Early Morning Prayer services. We will determine what kind of seedling we will be and grow to a tree this year. As a tradition, Bethel Church will make a new theme song. We will praise God with determination throughout the year. This theme song will contain our new motto, our prayers and hope for God.

On December 16th, 1965, Astronauts Walter Schirra and Thomas Stafford of spaceship Gemini 6, accomplished a historical and success ful rendezvous mission with Gemini 7. Schirra then took out a har monica and started playing a Christmas carol, and Stafford played the rhythm with bells. All NASA staff became emotional watching this, and celebrated as the first song performed in space. The harmonica and bells are now on display in Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C. These two instruments are on display because of significance of the beginning of a new world in space for mankind. Instead of con quering a new continent with battles by a powerful nation like in the olden days, the first step toward space had a message of hope and peace represented by a Christmas carol rather than war and battles.

This year’s motto is “Go Deeper, Go Higher!” Elijah Early Morning Prayer on the first week of New Year is a time to sow seedling that will bring us fruit for the year. Like the first performance of carol in space, our first song for the New Year is [Deeper, Higher]. We will run through the year with this hope. From our humble place on our knees, we will spread our wings of faith with the goal of glorifying God in our midst. As we head toward this brand new year, let’s sing together with all our hearts.
