How Much Do You Make An Hour?

Rev. Bryan Kim

This is what I heard from a restaurant manager: these days it is so hard to find workers. When he gives them their pay on the weekend, then next day many are absent for no reason. This makes running a restaurant very difficult. So the owner must always be on standby just in case some employees do no-show. He tried raising their hourly wag es, but to no avail. We want to scout good workers even if it means paying them more. It is like a high-performing athlete being scouted by a professional team at a higher salary. Calculating a person’s value into a dollar amount is nothing new. LeBron James of L.A. Lakers: his annual salary is $31.4 million plus additional $10 million from his en dorsements. Lionel Messi, a professional soccer player who recently moved to Paris Saint-Germain F.C.: his annual salary is $45 million. Someone did an interesting calculation. While sleeping, James makes about $4,000 an hour, and Messi about $5,000 an hour. It may sound strange that one can make money for sleeping. But perhaps it is not simply an interesting calculation, rather something we should seriously consider. Not just the hours that we work for a company, but also our after-work life at home, making a good use of our leisure time, and getting the needed rest with a sleep must be considered. That is be cause these are not irrelevant; because when wereturn to work, these factors influence our productivity. From this we learn the lesson that not just the work productivity, but an evaluation of our overall produc tivity needs to be considered – such as relationships with our children, caring for our mental health while enjoying the leisure time, and etc.

How should we measure the value of a believer? His value is proba bly recognized by his good influences on his local church. What are “good influences”? Although each of the believers probably has his own method of calculating such value, it involves not only the amount of time spent serving at church, but also his speech and attitude of life that consistently show Christ’s characters both at his home and at his work. This is not a question of which is more important – church, family, or work – but a question of consistency in our lives. This lesson is conveyed by an old Korean adage: “a bowl that leaks at home, also leaks in the field.” Unless we constantly train ourselves to think and act in God-centered and the Word-centered ways, our bowl is surely leaking somewhere. It is not enough just once to receive grace and moved by it; it is important to let the grace of God flow through all the deep recesses of our lives until the healthy habits take root in our lives. That is the price of a believer
