Mother’s Day(Parent’s Day) Gift

Rev. Paul S. Jeong

Just like Mother’s Day comes around every spring, I have a visitor that comes around every spring. It is allergy. With so many pollens flying around, I am at battle with allergies this spring. When I start to sneeze while driving, my car shakes. At times it’s a little scary. I felt tickling from pollens in my nose when I was driving my children to school. I tried to hold in my sneeze. I hold until I couldn’t and then burst into sneezes, repeating “Oh, I’m gonna die”. My daughter immediately responds “Dad, you cannot die”. After all, the one who truly loves a father is his daughter. My daughter, who is not fluent in Korean, took literally what I said. As a dad, seeing this as a teachable moment, I told her everyone leaves this world when it’s time. Then I reminded her about the giant sequoias we saw awhile back. I said that they live to about 2000 years. I told her life is like a handful of grass. As I was about to share the gospel, my son, who was in the back uninterested, abruptly blurted, “The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forev er.”(Is 40:8) I was shocked. My son, rambunctious at school and church, recites a verse that was perfect for this conversation. I was more shocked than emotional. When I asked him, he said he learned it at school. He was writing to correct his crooked penmanship. It was this verse that he was writing.

I remember not too long ago that my son came in first place at our Church school Primary Department’s Golden Bell Quiz. When I heard him, I didn’t praise him, but instead questioned him, “you didn’t cheat, right?” How was this possible with a child, who doesn’t do well on school tests and who doesn’t care to do Church school homework, is the thought that came to my mind. When I asked how he did it, he was very cool about it. He said, “I already knew”. He said he learned it at school. He naturally gained knowledge through daily Bible class and history class, learning about history of Israel and world history. I was initially concerned whether my children will do well or not when I enrolled them into Bethel Classical Academy last year. After watching my children, if someone asks me what was the best thing I did for my children, I can say enrolling them into the school.

When we were almost at school, my daughter asked what kind of gift I wanted for Parent’s Day(Mother’s Day). I answered, “All I need is you guys, You are the best gift of my life”. My daughter replied, “Dad, you’re wrong, dad. The greatest gift is Jesus.” I was shocked again. Is this what they mean by when your heart skips a beat? It was a reminder for me, who was thinking worldly, to realize, once again, the meaning of true gift. Today, taking them to school, I have un expectedly received the best gift from my children. As the children confessed, God’s Word is eternal and our greatest gift is Jesus. I wish you a blessed Parent’s Day(Mother’s Day) in Jesus.
