All Dogs Here, Right?

Rev. Bryan Kim

About 10 pastors went to a restaurant that served only two kinds of meat: dog meat and duck meat. A pastor, who was a regular custom er there, reserved a room. As they were waiting to place an order, a waitress opened the door and said, “All dogs here, right?” With this, these pastors abruptly became dogs. They all laughed heartily and be gan to list the reasons why they should be dogs. First, they must bark well. As ones who proclaim God’s Word, they need to witness with zeal. Second, they must protect well. Protect the believers from the evil power that prowls around like a roaring lion seeking sheep to de vour; and lead them to the truth with right words. Third, they must eat and run well. As they do home visitations where coffee is continually served, they need to drink 10 cups well and diligently press on with their visitations. Pastors eat as they are served. Fourth, they must never bite their master. Pastors must be faithful to the end without betraying God their master. Fifth, they must have loyalty. That’s right. A pastor must not look at the believers of another church with covetous eyes. That’s to keep his loyalty to the believers of his own church entrusted by God. Perhaps not only pastors, but also all believers in Christ should be like this. As such dogs are called faithful dogs, we all who follow Jesus should be faithful believers.

Some years ago I went to Boston for a revival meeting. Early Sunday morning, on the way from my lodging to the church where the revival meeting took place, I passed by an American church. In front of that church’s main entrance, I saw a crowd of people with their dogs. The pastor who was driving asked me, “Do you know why these dogs are gathered in front of the church?” “Well?” “These folks are having Sun day worship with their dogs.” “What?” I was startled and looked closely. Then I saw a pastor in a clergy robe leading a worship in the front. I have seen a pet cemetery where dogs are buried, but have never imag ined that there would be a church that worships like this. Truly, if there are people who do not worship on Sunday, we could say that they are worse than the dogs. In all ages and countries, the animal that comes up the most often when people curse is dogs. But we may need to be humble before such dogs. Dogs that worship on Sunday, the faithful dogs. . . A great sadness surges that we are living in an age where the phrase “All dogs here, right?” has become a lesson to be engraved in our hearts
