중국/한국/이태리로 번지는 코로나 바이러스로 “미국은 안전한가?”의 문제가 도마에 올랐습니다. 하버드대 전염병 전문가 마크 립시치 교수는 “인류의 최대 70%가 신종 코로나 바이러스에 감염될 것”이라는 전망을 내놓았다고 미국의 시사주간지 애틀랜틱은 밝히고 있습니다. 이런 가운데 지난 2 월 26일, 도날드 트럼프 대통령은 연방 질병통제 예방센터(CDC) 관계자들과 함께 기자회견을 하면서, 어떤 상황에서도 만반의 준비가 되어 있다고 밝혔습니다. LA 카운티 보건 당국은 “잘못된 정보와 과장된 사실은 커뮤니티 전체에 해를 끼치는 만큼, LA 카운티 주민들은 불필요한 공포에서 벗어나 식당 이용 및 샤핑 등의 일상적인 야외 활동을 지속해도 무방하다”라고 했으며, 특히 확진자와 실제로 접촉하지 않는 한, 같은 공간이나 주변에 있었다고 해서 바이러스가 곧바로 전염되는 것은 아니라는 것이 보건 당국과 전문가들의 설명이라고 전했습니다.

일반 시민들의 지나친 불안과 공포가 경제적 위축을 야기할 파장 때문에 이렇게 발 빠르게 보도를 하는지 모르겠습니다만, 저는 바이러스보다 사회적으로 번지는 심리적 기피현상이 더욱 큰 문제라고 생각합니다. 이미 우버나 리프트 등 승차 공유 서비스 기사들이 아시아계로 보이는 승객을 거부하는 일이 생기고 있으며, 마스크를 쓰고 다니면 보균자로 여겨져 주위 사람들에게 왜 돌아 다니냐는 비난을 듣기도 한다는 것입니다. 연방 질병통제 예방센터(CDC)의 발표에 의하면 미국에서 독감으로 사망한 사람의 수가 지난 1월 말 기준 만 명을 넘어섰으며, 독감이 코로나 바이러스보다 훨씬 치명적이라고 합니다. 독감에 걸린 사람이 마스크를 쓰고 다니는 아시아계 사람들에게 코로나 바이러스 운운하며 비하하는 것은 X 묻은 개가 겨 묻은 개 나무라는 것과 같습니다.

SNS를 통해 무분별하게 번지는 불안감과 확대 과장된 가짜 뉴스까지 한몫 하면서 같은 한국 사람끼리도 남의 건강을 유난히도 살피는 경향들이 생겼습니다. 친한 사람들끼리도 점심은 뭘 먹었냐, 누구 집 아이가 선을 봤다며, 아내가 유산했다며 하는 등의 지나친 관심은 부담스러운데, 바이러스로 사회가 뒤숭숭한 이때에 함께 신앙생활하는 한 교회 교인들끼리도 어디를 다녀왔는지 묻는 등 열렬한 관심을 갖는 것은 기피대상이 되기 십상입니다. 우리 베델의 성도들은 책임 있는 시민으로서, 그리고 성숙한 신앙인으로서 서로를 배려하는 마음으로 남에게 해가 될 만한 언행은 스스로 절제하고, 교회의 공동체적 활동이 위축되지 않도록 지혜롭게 행동해야 할 것입니다. 이것도 지나가겠지만, 모든 사람이 기피하는 대구를 향하여 자원봉사하겠 다고 달려가는 의사 선생님들처럼 성도로서 해야 할 빛과 소금의 역할을 깊이 생각하면서, 가정과 교회 그리고 나라를 지켜가는 그리스도인들이 되었으면 좋겠습니다. 그러기 위해서 사회적 대인 기피증이 전도 기피증 또한 하나님을 향한 예배 기피증으로 번지는 것을 더 조심합시다.

Xenophobia, Sociophobia and Worship-phobia

With the spread of coronavirus in China, Korea, and Italy, the question on the cutting board is “Is America safe?” The Atlantic Weekly reported that Harvard professor of Epidemiology Mark Lipsitch views that “about 70% of humans will be infected with the new coronavirus”. In the midst of this, President Donald Trump and CDC revealed at a joint press conference that we are ready for any situation. LA County Health authorities explained, “Misleading information and exaggerated truth is harming our community. We need to be free from fear to continue going to restaurants, shopping, and outdoor activities.” Unless there is a real physical contact with the confirmed coronavirus patient, you will not be infected by being in the vicinity.  

Perhaps this announcement was made to prevent economic shock from extreme anxiety and fear. However, I think the bigger problem is not the virus, but it is spreading of psychological avoidance. Already, there have been incidences of ride sharing services like Uber and Lyft drivers turning away Asian customers. If you have a mask on, people assume you are a virus carrier and you overhear people saying why you are out and about. According to CDC, flu is much more fatal than the coronavirus. As of end of January, there have been over 10,000 deaths due to flu. Those infected with flu criticizing Asians wearing mask is like a dog stained with feces criticizing another dog with offal.  

With indiscriminate spreading of uncertainties exaggerated by fake news through social media is causing unusual concerns for health even between Koreans. Even with those that are closest to you, we feel burdened when they are overly concerned with what we had for lunch, whose child is match-made with whom, or wife’s miscarriage. It’s easy to avoid one another when we become overly concerned about their travels even in our faith community. As responsible citizens and mature believers, we need to control ourselves from causing potential harm to others and be wise in our church community activities. This shall pass. Like those doctors going to Daegu, where people are avoiding, to volunteer, we need to become Christians who can secure our family, church, and country as we contemplate on our actions as believers to be the light and salt. Therefore, we must be careful not to let spread as evangelism-phobia and worship-phobia.
