실내 예배를 중단하라는 행정 명령이 있던 지난 7월 “그 날”, 새벽기도를 마치고 허탈한 마음으로 다시 교회 문을 닫고 나오면서, 무거운 마음도 털어낼 겸 걷기로 했습니다. 그날따라 늦게까지 기도를 하던 분들이 계셔서, 먼저 나와 계셨던 담임 목사님과 몇 분이 앞서 걸어가기 시작했고 나중에 나오신 분들은 먼저 출발한 그룹을 따라 걷기 시작했습니다. 그런데 문제가 있었습니다! 담임 목사님의 걸음이 다른 분들보다 두배 이상 빠르다는 것이었습니다. 조금 먼저 출발하셨을 뿐인데 그 뒤에 오는 분들은 도무지 따라잡을 수 없을 정도였습니다. 아무리 빨리 걸어도 뒤쳐지기 시작하자, 급기야 한 명, 두 명 달리기 시작했고 숨이 차오르면 걷다가 다시 뛰기를 반복하는 재미있는 상황이 연출되었습니다. 앞서 가시는 담임 목사님은 그저 걸으실 뿐이었는데, 뒤에 오는 사람들은 뛰었다 걸었다 하며 담임 목사님을 따라잡으려 고군분투하는 것이었습니다. 저 역시 후발 주자였습니다. 원래 체력이 좋지 않기도 하지만, 아무리 걸어도 뛰어도 따라잡을 수 없음을 깨닫던 순간, 제 머리속을 스치는 단어가 있었습니다. “이끌든지 끌려가든지” 곧이어 ‘나는 지금 이 세상에 끌려가고 있지는 않은가?’ ‘삶의 경주에 지쳐 숨이 차서 힘들어하고 있지는 않은가?’라는 질문이 제 마음을 강하게 쳤습니다. 코로나 이후, 우리는 아무것도 할 수 없다며 세상에 끌려가고 있지는 않습니까? 손발이 묶이고 욱여쌈을 당한 것 같은 이 상황과 시대를 탓하며, 숨이 차고 힘들어 주저앉아 있지는 않습니까? 사도 바울은 로마 감옥에서 손발이 묶여 있었지만, 복음의 능력은 묶인 그를 통해 온 로마로 뻗어 나갔습니다. 예수님의 죽음은 손발이 묶여 더 이상 갈길 없는 막다른 골목 같아 보였습니다. 그러나 십자가에 달리신 예수님은 우리를 천국으로 이끌어 주신 은혜의 길이 되셨습니다.
매주 수요일, 저는 이제 맨 앞에서 걸어갑니다. 비록 숨이 차오를 때도 있지만 옆에 있는 분의 발걸음을 맞추며 걷다 보면 어느새 목적지에 도착합니다. 사랑하는 베델의 성도 여러분, 코로나 시대가 우리를 묶어 버리고 아무것도 못하도록 막은 것 같지만, 하나님의 백성들은 이 가운데서도 오히려 하나님께 소망을 둔 기쁨으로 살아가며, 복음의 진전을 맛보면서 이 세상을 이끄는 자들입니다. 세상에 이끌려 가는 대신 복음으로 세상을 이끄는 베델의 모든 성도님들이 되시기를 소원합니다.
Lead… or Be Led

Normally I don’t have time or even think about doing exercise. Recently I had time for exercise, which I have long been waiting for. It’s the exercise time with pastoral staff on Wednesdays after early morning prayer service. For about an hour, we walk or go hiking together. Initially, we walked when we had time. Now it has become much anticipated Wednesday exercise time for the pastoral staff. Thinking back about how this happened, I realized it all began on “that day…”
It was “that day” in July when we received the state executive order to stop indoor worship. Closing worship doors again gave us heavy hearts. After early morning prayer service, we decided to walk to ease the burden we felt in our hearts. That particular day some of us ended their prayers late. Along with senior pastor, those who came out early began walking few minutes ahead of the others. Those that came out late gathered and began following the early start group. However, there was a problem! Senior pastor walked twice as fast as the others. Not only did he get a head start, the distance was so far ahead that those that left behind could not catch up. No matter how fast they walked, they kept trailing behind even further. Then, one person, two… began to run. They would walk at times to catch their breath and then run again. This fun image continued. Senior pastor who was ahead of everyone just continued walking. Those fell behind ran, walked and continued this battle of catching up to Pastor Bryan. I too trailed behind. I am not physically fit… No matter how hard I walked or ran, I could not catch up. Then these words came to my mind. “Lead… or be led.” And ‘am I being led by this world?’, ‘Am I struggling and out of breath, tired of running this race of life?’ are the questions that hit me hard. Have we given up after Coronavirus and allowed ourselves to be led by this world thinking that there’s nothing we can do? Are our hands tied in this fight and have we given up, blaming the situation and collapsed and out of breath? Apostle Paul’s hands and feet were bound in prison. However, the power of gospel reached throughout Rome. Death of Jesus Christ on the cross felt like approaching a dead end with bounded hands and feet. However, Jesus hung on the cross led us to road of grace, heaven.
Nowadays, I walk ahead of everyone on Wednesdays. There are times when I am out of breath, but I could arrive at the destination as I walk in sync with the person next to me. Dear Bethel members, we may feel we are bound by Coronavirus and kept from doing things. We lead this world living in joy and tasting the expansion of the gospel because we are God’s people who has hope in Him. May all Bethel members lead this world with the gospel.
