Future of Immigrant Churches

Rev. Bryan Kim

One of the most frequently asked questions lately is in regard to the future of immigrant churches. “How will immigrant churches change in the next 20, 30 years?” “What do you think is the most urgent issues of immigrant churches?” “Will our next generations of churches still exist, as Korean churches?” “Will the end of immigration be the end of immigrant churches?”

Personally, I think the issues of immigrant churches are no different than the issues of churches in Korea. You could say that there may be language and cultural barriers. However, just speaking the same language does not solve issues of communication. Even twins have generational gap. Rather than language and cultural barriers, confirming philosophy of Christ-centered ministry and goals are more important. Principle of working together is sharing philosophy and goals of ministry. This principle must be adhered to when doing ministry across the board. It is absolutely necessary when serving in a church together. Apostle Paul referred to his co-workers for the gospel as those “who have labored side by side with me”(Phil 4:3). Two cows are yoked together in order to put their strengths together in one direction. This yoke is the philosophy and goals of ministry. I don’t think it would be an exaggeration to say that the future of immigrant churches hangs on pastoral training of those with upright character who have correct philosophy and goals of ministry.

Pastor Nam Joon Kim wrote a book for pastoral candidates called [Are you sure you really want to go that route]. He wrote in the book that he saw demonstration signs at a seminary. “Greek and Hebrew should be elective courses! Elective courses!” “Hebrew professors that fail us must be removed! Removed!” Pastor Kim was saddened “These thieves came to seminary wanting to gobble up the whole Bible but don’t want to do the work”. Even the book of Buddhism (Palmandaejanggyeo) requires about 7 years of studying Chinese characters before they are able to read it. Giving up on Bible’s original languages, Hebrew and Greek, means that those are ‘crazy’ seminarians who don’t want to become ministry experts. Muslims learn Arab, their mother language, at an early age in order to read Koran. This kind of practice should put pastors, who should be Bible experts, to shame. I think we need to raise clear-minded and upright pastors in order for immigrant churches to have a future. I am not saying that there’s only hope if we study the original language, but we must raise pastors with the right attitude who faithfully take on the responsibilities of what they are called to do. There is hope for a church to stand upright only if there is one upright pastor.

I think I understand why the first missionaries who came to Korea built schools. I believe raising and growing workers with the conviction that “Even to the empty fields and valleys, I will bring the gospel” will determine the vibrancy of immigrant churches 2, 30 years down the road. As I look back on how God has used me, despite my inadequacies, I am determined to do the concrete work of raising one upright pastor from now on.
