지난주, 존 웨인 공항에서 시큐리티 체크를 위해 재킷을 벗고 가방을 검색대 위에 올려놓고 엑스레이를 통과하는데 갑자기 뒤에서 한 백인 아주머니가 어깨를 치며 “당신이 입고 있는 바지 브랜드가 뭐예요?”라고 묻는 것 이었습니다. 기자와 인터뷰를 할 때도 웬만한 질문에는 별로 당황하지 않는데 예쁜 백인 아주머니로부터 내가 입고 있는 바지가 어느 브랜드인지 묻는 질문을 받자 당황하지 않을 수 없었습니다. 이를 눈치챈 아주머니가 자기가 작업을 거는 것이 아님을 에둘러 밝히는 듯 말을 이어갑니다. “당신이 입고 있는 바지를 남편에게 사주고 싶어서요.” 평소에 아무 바지나 손에 잡히는 대로 입는 나에게 지금 입은 바지 브랜드를 물으니, 당장 확인할 수 도 없고 참 난감했습니다. 문득 작년에 한국에 갔을 때 바지를 샀던 기억이 나서 한국 제품(Made in Korea)이라고 했더니, 받아 적은 뒤에 엄지 척을 하면서 “당신도 바지만큼이나 멋있습니다”라고 하는 것이었습니다. 아마 지금 이 글을 읽는 분들은 도저히 믿기지 않을 것입니다. 저도 믿기지 않아서 이렇게 글까지 쓰고 있음을 양해해 주시기 바랍니다. 그래도 2년 후면 환갑을 맞을 나이에 이런 말을 듣는 것이 그리 기분 나쁘지 않았습니다. 아니, 한국 제품이 정말 좋다며 국위 선양까지 한 것 같아서 괜히 우쭐해졌습니다. 앞으로는 교회 갈 때도 이 바지만 입고 다닐까 생각 중입니다.(^^)

사도 바울이 베뢰아에 들렀을 때 그들이 데살로니가 사람들보다 ‘더 신사 적(more noble)’이라고 평가한 적이 있습니다. 한 도시, 한 마을의 분위기, 그곳의 사람들에게서 풍겨 나는 품격, 요즘식으로 말하면 인격의 브랜드가 느껴졌던 것 같습니다. 목회자로 평생 살면서 수많은 분들을 대하다 보면 말 한마디에도 그분의 품격이 남다르게 느껴지는 분이 있는 것이 사실입니다. 그리고 그 인상은 특별한 일이 없는 한 지금까지도 변함없이 진행형입니다. 그리스도의 인격이 풍기는 분들과 함께 신앙생활을 하는 것 처럼 큰 복은 없습니다. 말 한마디에도, 악수와 눈웃음으로 인사하는 태도에도 뭐라 말할 수 없는 ‘더 신사적(more noble)’인 품격이 느껴지는 분들 이 모여 한 교회의 브랜드를 만들어 갈 수 있지 않을까 생각해 봅니다. 방문자를 처음 대하는 모습, 식당에서 앞치마를 두르고 섬기는 모습, 성가대 원들이 연습하는 모습, 기도하는 성도들의 모습, 예배 후 식당 앞에 줄 서는 모습과 주차장에 가기 위해 버스를 기다리는 모습, 손뼉치며 찬양하는 모습, 진지하게 메시지를 듣는 자세 등 그 교회의 품격을 읽을 수 있는 러 모습에서 우리는 어쩌면 더 나은 브랜드를 생각할 수 있을 것입니다. 앞으로 이런 일이 일어나면 얼마나 좋을까 상상해 봅니다. 어느 공적인 모임에서 여러분을 보고 “저분의 말하는 모습이나 남을 배려하며 에티켓을 지키는 모습이 꼭 베델교회에 갔을 때 느꼈던 분위기 같아.”라는 사람들의 평가를 받는 일입니다. 혹시 어느 날 공항에서 누군가 여러분의 어깨를 툭 치면서 “당신이 입고 있는 브랜드가 무엇입니까?”라고 물었을 때, “베델 제품(Made in Bethel)입니다.”라고 자랑스럽게 답하는 날을 상상해 봅니다.

Brand of Character

I went through security check at John Wayne Airport last week. As I was going through the security line with my jacket and bag on the conveyor, a caucasian lady tapped me on my shoulder and asked, “What brand is your pants?” I don’t normally panic even when I interview with reporters time to time. However, when this pretty lady asked me about the brand of pants I was wearing, I was caught off guard and couldn’t help but to panic. She continued the conversation realizing that maybe she shouldn’t have asked. “I asked because I wanted to get them for my husband.” I usually just wear whatever I grab. I was completely thrown off with her question and had no way to check the brand name. Then, I remembered buying these pants on a trip to Korea, and I said it was made in Korea. She made a note of it and gave me thumbs up and said, “You look as good as your pants.” I know some of you who are reading this won’t believe me. Please excuse me as I write this because I don’t believe it either. I will be turning 60 years old in couple of years, and such a comment is not bad to hear. Besides, I felt proud to have promoted Korean products. I’m wondering if I should wear these pants to church from now on.

When Apostle Paul visited Berea, he commented that they ‘were of more noble’ character. He probably felt a certain brand of dignity as he experienced the city, atmosphere of town, and people with dignified characters. I have been a pastor all my life and have experienced countless number of people. It is true that in some people you feel a certain sense of dignity about them. Their impression, aside from special circumstances, still remains even now. There is no greater blessing than to live in faith with such people who radiate Christ-like character. I wonder if we can create a brand of church with people with ‘more noble character’ in their words, from shake of hands to laughter in their eyes, and in their attitudes. Perhaps we can make better brand of character in images like greeting new comers, serving in cafeteria, practicing choir members, prayers, lining up in front of cafeteria after worship, waiting for a parking lot shuttle bus, praising and clapping, earnestly listening to message, and other images that represent the church. I can imagine how wonderful that would be. It’s like being at a public gathering and people commenting, “In speech and consideration for others, and your etiquette feels much like when I visited Bethel Church.” Perhaps when someone taps on your shoulder at an airport and asks, “What brand are you wearing?” I imagine proudly answering, “It’s made in Bethel.”
