Let’s Make Conserving Lifestyle

Rev. Bryan Kim

People on Air Bus A380 that carries many passengers said “They liked it big, but now they said it’s too big.” This airplane is nicknamed ‘hotel in the sky’ and it carries about 500 passengers. With Coronavirus outbreak, they were severely impacted with travelers dropping them. They have halted operations and are currently parked with a fee of about $2000 per day. Even worse, Korean Air, 10th largest in the world, is paying $600,000 a month for their parking fees. The fuel cost is too high to fly a plane with empty seats. Using for cargo is not efficient for passenger planes. Airplanes are suddenly not wanted.

Coronavirus did not only halt operation of planes. All theaters and concert halls have closed their doors, and all performances have been canceled. Now, all restaurants are closing. People are becoming anxious as this virus wreaks havoc in our city. As churches are moving to online worship, our life’s rhythm is broken. For the first time since creation, our 7-day rhythm has been broken. We hope that online worship will not be too much longer but, because of aftereffect, finding normalcy after Coronavirus is not going to be easy.

Longer this lasts, it will become harder for those who live by paycheck to paycheck. If your business does not do well for a month or two with rent to pay, you will feel stressed for the foreseeable future. Even the church that operates on your offering will be critically hit from this domino effect. Bigger the church, bigger the impact like that of A380. I see five buses parked in our empty parking lot. On Sundays, school buses have to be chartered to shuttle in our church members because five is not enough. Like A380, since last Sunday, our buses remain parked. On Sundays we are short of classrooms and even have to set up tents for church school small groups. Now we’re going around turning off lights in empty classrooms to conserve electricity. I reflect on how wasteful we have been instead of conserving living in the United States. We need to fix our habits of grabbing napkins way more than we need at McDonald’s. Unable to purchase toilet papers, we should use couple sheets at a time instead of wads of them. I think we need to cut paper towels in half to conserve. We should not have water running while brushing our teeth. When eating at church, we must do our best to conserve so as not to have too much leftovers. With that determination, don’t let go of our Sunday online worship service. Encourage one other. Don’t only think about what you have lost because of Coronavirus, but remember what you have gained from it. When things become normalized, I fervently pray that we will be more mature and renewed in grace.
