몇 년 전 신문기사 중에 유난히 제 시선을 붙잡는 제목이 있었습니다. 바로 “초불확실성의 시대(The Age of Hyper-Uncertainty)”였습니다. 1970년대를 규정했던 “불확실성의 시대(The Age of Uncertainty)”라는 유명한 책이 있었는데, 그로부터 40년이 지난 지금, 불확실성을 훨씬 뛰어넘어 초불확실성의 시대에 살고 있다는 내용이었습니다. 물론 그 당시 정치, 경제상황을 다룬 용어였지만, 최근 코로나 팬데믹으로 인해 급변하는 국제질서, 경제구조, 삶의 양식을 보며 지금 이 시대야말로 초불확실성의 시대가 아닌가 하는 생각이 듭니다.

우리 성도님들의 삶을 보더라도, 처음에는 장기화되는 격리로 인해 “코로나 블루”라며 우울증에 눌려 있었는데, 이후 생활고 및 극도로 치닫는 분노로 “코로나 레드”라 불리는 상황에까지 이르렀고, 이제는 언제 끝날지 모르는 이 사태로 절망, 좌절, 공허를 호소하는 “코로나 블랙”에까지 이르렀다고 합니다. 참으로 1년도 되지 않은 이 짧은 시간에 일어난 변화로 우리는 한 치 앞을 알 수 없는 불안한 시대를 살아가고 있습니다. 하지만 이럼에도 불구하고 우리에게 힘과 위로를 주는 말씀이 있습니다. 바로 여호수아 1장 9절 “강하고 담대하라 두려워하지 말고 놀라지 말라 네가 어디로 가든지 네 하나님 여호와가 너와 함께 하느니라”는 이 말씀은 초불확실성의 시대를 사는 우리들에게 큰 용기와 위로를 줍니다. 그런데 이 말씀에서 우리가 가끔 생략하는 부분이 있습니다. 첫 부분에 있는 “내가 네게 명령한 것이 아니냐” 입니다. 하나님께서 강하고 담대하라고 하신 것은 단순히 우리를 위로하고 용기를 주시려고 하신 말씀이 아니라, 우리와 이 시대를 향한 하나님의 ‘명령’이라는 것입니다. 하나님의 전능하심과 선하심을 믿는 자들은 어떠한 현실 앞에서도 무서워 떨지 말며 주저하지 말라는 하나님의 준엄한 명령인 것입니다. 이 말씀은 또한 명령으로 끝나지 않고 이 명령을 우리가 순종해도 되는 이유, 곧 “네 하나님 여호와가 너와 함께 하시느니라”는 약속도 함께 주십니다.

초불확실성의 시대에 우리가 어떻게 살아야 하는가라는 질문을 받는다면, 지금 우리의 상황은 한 치 앞을 볼 수 없지만, 여호와 하나님이 함께 하시기에 요셉처럼 감옥에 있으나 담대할 수 있고, 다윗처럼 도피하고 있으나 두려워하지 않는다고 고백할 수 있습니다. 하나님이 함께 하시기에 지금 우리의 삶은 ‘확실’하고 ‘괜찮습니다’! 2021년, 코로나 팬데믹 가운데 내일을 예측할 수 없는 초불확실성의 시대지만 하나님이 함께하시기에 “확실한” 한해라고 고백하는 성도님들이 되시기를 소망합니다.

The Age of Hyper-Uncertainty

There was a title of newspaper article that captured my attention a few years ago. It was “The Age of Hyper-Uncertainty”. Reading the article, I learned that there was a famous book called “The Age of Uncertainty” which was written based in 1970’s. The newspaper article writes that, 40 years later, we have gone beyond uncertainty and we live in the age of hyper-uncertainty. Back then it was dealing with politics and economic uncertainty. Now, watching rapidly changing international order, economic structure, and lifestyle due to COVID-19 makes me think that this is the age of hyper-uncertainty.

Even in examining our congregation, initially we called the depression under prolonged isolation “Corona Blue”. After that, we reached extreme anger in life and called the condition “Corona Red”. Now we have reached desperation, frustration and emptiness and call it “Corona Black”. We have been living with uncertainty, for a period of less than a year, not being able to see what is ahead of us. There is God’s Word that strengthens and comforts us at this time. It is Joshua 1:9. “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” This gives us encouragement and comfort living in hyper-uncertainty. However, there is a part in this passage that we often omit. It is the beginning part, “Have I not commanded you?” Be strong and courageous is not just simply words to comfort and encourage us. It is God’s command for the ages. It is God’s strict command to those who believe in Almighty God and His goodness not to fear and hesitate in any circumstances. This passage does not end in command. God said, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous” and then gave us reason for obedience. It is the promise that “the Lord your God is with you wherever you go”. The reason why we can obey His command to not fear in this age of hyper-uncertainty is because of God’s promise to be with us.

If we are questioned how we are supposed to live in this age of hyper-uncertainty, although the situation does not allow us to see ahead, because Jehovah God is with us, we can profess that we can be courageous like Joseph in prison and not fear like David who was fleeing. Because God is with us, our life is certain and fine today. Even in this age of hyper-uncertainty, in midst of COVID-19, where we do not know what is ahead in 2021, I hope for you this year to become congregation who profess “certainty”, because God is with us.
