“She is very social!

Lessons Learned from Coronavirus 2 – Social Distancing

Rev. Bryan Kim

Social Distancing has become a daily language since Coronavirus. Two incompatible words came together to create a new expression. I am reminded of every teacher’s evaluation on my oldest daughter’s report card since kindergarten. “She is very social!” Being ‘social’ means that you get along well with others. However, at the same time, ‘distancing’ refers to social distance, space between each other.

When I was young, I was told that you must go to school unless you are dying. Obviously, when my children were not feeling well with mild fever, I would give them Tylenol and send them to school. What I have also learned through experience is that whenever this happens, I will inevitably get a call from teacher to take the child home early. The fact is that my child can infect other children. My set rule of children going to school no matter how sick they were is crumbled. Beyond wanting to learn, I did not think about harming someone else.

Our social activities became restrained from Coronavirus. Daily dinner engagements disappeared. Coming home right after work and taking a walk around the neighborhood after dinner have become a habit. A thought came to my mind as I was walking at dusk wearing a black training suit and a mask. Before Coronavirus, if I walked at night wearing this attire, a mask and a hat, I would have looked suspicious to others. Now, this is seen as ‘not causing harm to others’, being considerate to others. When I walk now, I take my mask off to breath in the fresh air, but as soon as I see someone walking towards me, I put my mask back on. Prior to Coronavirus, this would be a message of “I don’t want anything to do with you!”, but now this has become a message of consideration “for your health”. I am confident that, even after Coronavirus, we will see people with masks. This is to be considerate and to protect others from infection when you are feeling sick.

I think we will have people wearing masks in our in-person worship as well. This may have sent off negative messages like “I’m not talking to you” “I am mad” before Coronavirus. Now it will become messages of “I am being considerate of you” “social distancing of love”. I hope we will not forget this valuable lesson of “social distancing of love” that we learned while isolating, house-bound and room-bound. Slowly as we return to being with others, and as we stretch out from being bound, we need to remember to wear our spiritual masks and not harm others with virus of words.

James 3:2-3 For we all stumble in many ways. And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body. If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well.
