두 주가 지나 새까맣게 타서 귀가한 아들의 첫마디는 “Our problems are too luxurious!

Lessons Learned from Coronavirus 4 – Benefit of Affliction

Rev. Bryan Kim

Psalm writer confesses, “It is good for me that I was afflicted, that I might learn your statutes” (Psalm 119:71). On the surface, you may think this seems like a false argument or a poetry that beautifies affliction to get through difficult times. However, most of mature believers will agree 100% with this from their experiences.

My eldest son went on a short-term mission for two weeks when he was just an immature high schooler. Rather than doing a mission work, he was trained in a mission field by the missionary. It was a training in that some ten plus students slept together, doing hard labor in the field, visiting locals not to ‘evangelize’ but to be useful to them by bringing water, helping in their fields, and gathering every night to worship. They couldn’t really take shower. Using the bathroom was uncomfortable. Paying for transportation and the cost to stay there for two weeks were just that, paying for hardship. First words out of my son when he returned, completely tanned, were “Our problems are too luxurious!” He learned that the problems we face here in America is nothing compared to the problems faced by locals in the mission field.

I think the benefit of affliction is to learn God’s teaching. It’s learning first that the key to problem solving is not with me but with God. It’s the moment of understanding that not my will but God’s will is right. Then, the affliction becomes a tool to refine us into jewels. It’s not a coincidence that Revelation 21 describes the Holy City in jewels. Rock gets tossed around and broken in storms. As they are trimmed in wind and rain, they become jewels. Our affliction of pandemic called Covid 19 was also a tool God used for our benefit. Not too long ago, an acquaintance sent me a prayer. The prayer reads the benefit this way.

Father God~!! How much have we lied that you want us to live with our mouths covered with masks? How much have we argued, envied, and hated each other that you want us to live distanced from each other? How much have we sinned and did bad things with our hands that you want us to sanitize our hands wherever we go? How much have we lived hot tempered that you want us to check our temperature everywhere we go? Now, I will live humbly, loving others!

Like a stone thrown out by a builder becomes a cornerstone, our Jesus is, as prophet Isaiah prophesied, “the one who has laid as a foundation in Zion, a stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, of a sure foundation…” (Isaiah 28:16). He has become a stone, so afflicted. He refines those believers who are afflicted today with His comforting hands to make them into jewels.
