저희 집 앞에는 탐스러운 열매를 자랑하는 자몽나무 한 그루가 있습니다. 무성한 초록 잎들 사이에 노랗게 열린 주먹만 한 열매들을 보고 있으면 금세 입안에 침이 고입니다. 사실 몇 개월 전, 그동안 맺힌 열매를 따면서 죽은 가지들을 다듬는다며 너무 많은 가지를 쳐내서 올해엔 과연 열매나 맺을 수 있을지 걱정도 했습니다. 안타까운 마음에 관심을 가지고 아침 저녁으로 열심히 물을 주곤 했는데, 팬데믹 기간의 겨울을 지낸 지금 찬 바람 속에서도 어느새 노란 열매를 다시금 주렁주렁 맺었습니다. 이런 나무를 보고 있노라면 참으로 신기하고 한없이 기특하기만 합니다.

반면 건너편에는 앙상한 가지만 남은 무화과나무도 있습니다. 여름내 무성한 잎들 사이로 열매를 잔뜩 맺었지만, 지금은 굵은 가지들만 남아 안쓰럽기까지 합니다. 지난여름, 부쩍 자란 가지 탓에 높이 달린 큼직한 무화과는 손이 닿지 않아 채 따지 못하고 본의 아니게 새들에게 인심을 써야 했는데, 잎이 떨어져 줄기를 다루기 쉬워진 지금은, 위로 솟은 가지들을 아래로 매만져 놓아서 다가오는 여름에는 달콤한 무화과를 따는 기쁨을 누려야겠다고 하다가, 문득 생각에 잠깁니다.

팬데믹으로 모든 것이 갇히고 멈춰버린 것 같았던 지난해, 과연 선교할 수는 있을까라며 우리는 고민했습니다. 그러나 마치 가지를 다 쳐낸 자몽나무에서도 다시 풍성한 열매가 맺히듯, 베델의 선교는 또 다른 열매를 맺어가고 있었습니다. 비록 비행기를 타고 나가는 단기 선교사는 아니었지만, 코람데오 아카데미와 베델 BAM훈련을 통해 주어진 삶의 자리에서 조용히 열매를 맺어가는 일상의 선교사들을 배출했습니다. 오늘 BAM훈련과정을 마치고 세상으로 보냄 받는 수료자 분들이야말로, 나른하고 답답한 생활에 상큼한 자몽과 같이 그리스도의 맛과 향기를 내는 분들이라고 확신합니다.

더불어, 다가올 여름에 달콤한 무화과의 풍성한 수확을 기대하려면 바로 지금, 가지들을 매만져야 하듯이 팬데믹 너머에 높이 맺힐 선교의 열매들을 바라보며 우리가 반드시 해야 할 일이 하나 있습니다. 이제 베델선교는 뉴 노멀 시대에 맞춰 선교의 고도를 높이고자 처음으로 온라인선교 박람회를 개최합니다. 그동안에는 우리가 선교지를 향해 발걸음을 옮겨야 했다면, 지금은 언제 어디서든지 손끝으로 클릭만 하면 새롭고 창의적인 다양한 방법으로 하나님의 선교에 동참하실 수 있습니다. 우리의 작은 헌신을 통해 하나님께서는 열방 곳곳에 생명의 열매를 맺게 하실 것입니다. 코로나의 긴 겨울을 지나며 앙상해진 우리 삶의 가지에도 주의 은혜로 싹이 돋고, 꽃이 피고, 다시금 풍성한 열매를 맺는 축복이 함께 하시길 소원합니다.

Bearing Fruit at the End of Coronavirus Pandemic

In front of my house is a grapefruit tree that bears luscious fruits. My mouth waters when I look at those yellow fruits, the size of my fist, between abundant green leaves. Actually, I think I had pruned too many branches after picking fruits a few months ago. I worried whether the tree would bear fruit this year or not. With high anticipation, I faithfully watered it day and night. Despite going through winter in this pandemic season, in the midst of cold winds, there are many yellow fruits hanging on the tree. I am proud and amazed when I look at this tree.

Across the way is a fig tree with few bare branches. It had many fruits in between the leaves during the summer, but it looks pathetic now with just few thick branches. It grew tall with many figs last summer. We left fruits on top that were out of reach for birds to enjoy. I think about pruning these branches shooting upward in preparation for delightful summer harvest of sweet figs. Then I suddenly fall deep in thought.

Last year when we had to stop everything due to the pandemic, I worried whether we would ever go to missions again? Like the pruned grapefruit tree that bears many fruits, Bethel missions is bearing different kind of fruits. Even though we are not able to fly to mission locations, we have produced everyday missionaries through Koram Deo Academy and BAM training. They are quietly bearing fruits in their lives. I firmly believe that those that have completed BAM training and sent to the world will bear fruit like the refreshing grapefruit, taste and fragrance of Jesus Christ.

If you expect to have abundant harvest of sweet figs this coming summer, the branches must be pruned. In the same way, there is one thing that we must do if we expect to harvest fruits of mission beyond the pandemic. Our Bethel Mission, in this season of new normal, will hold an online Missions Fair for the first time. We used to physically go to mission fields in the past. Now we can participate in mission work in diverse and creative ways with one click. God will bring much fruit in all parts of the world through our small dedication. It is my blessing to all of you that, even living through this long winter of Coronavirus, by God’s grace, our branches will begin to bud. Flowers bloom, and again bear many fruits.
