BC & AC, 요즘 만들어진 신종어입니다. 코로나 이전(Before Corona)과 이후의 시기(After Corona)를 일컫는 말로, 코로나 이후 세상은 코로나 이전으로 돌아가는 것이 아니라 ‘새 정상화’ (New Normal)라는 말을 하듯이 이전에 모르던 새로운 모습으로 변할 것이라고 합니다. 저는 미국의 9.11 사태의 충격을 잊지 못합니다. 그 이후 참 많은 것이 변했습니다. 제가 피부로 느끼는 것은 공항 문화의 변화입니다. 공항에서 신발을 벗는 것과 물병을 가지고 보안검색대를 통과하지 못하는 것이 오랫동안 어색했습니다. 해외에 나갔다가 미국으로 돌아올 때, 공항에서의 엄격한 조사는 죄인 취급당하는 기분이었는데, <글로벌 앤트리> 시스템이 생겨서 입국 절차를 간소화하는 방법으로 나름 적응하고 있습니다.

코로나 이후 가장 많은 변화가 예상되는 부분은 역시 출입 절차입니다. 공항에서 출국/입국 절차도 엄해지겠지만, 공공장소의 출입도 매우 엄격해질 것입니다. 스포츠 경기나, 음악회 등 사람이 운집하는 곳이나, 많은 사람들이 함께 모여 예배드리는 교회의 출입도 까다로워질 전망입니다. 이미, 음악회나 스포츠 경기장 입장 시에는 총기(흉기) 소지를 조사해왔지만, 이제는 몸의 온도를 재는 열감 지기도 설치될 것입니다. 이것은 교회도 예외는 아닐 것 같습니다. 누구나 환영 받고 VIP로 대접받아야 할 예배 장소에서 체온을 재고, 때로는 입장을 막아야 하는 일까지 생길지 모릅니다. 틀림없이 악수나 허그 같은 인사 방법은 자제되고, 코로나 이후에도 적당한 거리를 두고 인사하는 에티켓이 정착되리라 봅니다.

코로나 이후의 예배는 서로의 건강을 객관적으로 신뢰하지 않으면 드릴 수 없는 상황이 왔고, 처음으로 교회를 찾아온 분들은 본의 아니게 눈치를 보며 많이 어색해할 것 같습니다. 코로나 이후 시대의 변화에 따라, 기존 및 처음 방문자들이 교회로 찾아오는 문턱을 낮추고 온라인이라는 비가시, 비대면 교제가 아니라 오프라인에서 서로의 눈을 직접 보며 대화할 수 있는 안전망을 구축해야 하는 과제가 우리에게 던져졌습니다. 뿐만 아니라, 이미 온라인의 맛을 본 성도들에게 양질의 신앙교육 자료를 지속적으로 공급하고 자녀들을 위한 예배 자료들을 풍성하게 제작하여, 인터넷에 범람하는 세속적인 자료들과 선의의 경쟁, 소위 문화전쟁을 제대로 하게 될 것입니다. 온라인을 통한 소통은 단순히 코로나 바이러스로 인한 임시적 대안이 아닌, 코로나 이후에도 끊임없이 개발되어야 할 영역임이 분명합니다. 온라인 소통이 세계화되면서 선교의 방법에도 큰 영향을 미칠 것입니다. (이 부분은 다음 주에 기재하겠습니다.) 코로나 이전에도 온라인 수업이 있었고, 트래픽 스쿨도 온라인으로 제공되고 있었습니다. 그러나, 코로나 이후에는 온라인으로 양질의 내용을 소통할 수 없으면 학교든 회사든 자연도태될 것입니다. 교회만큼은 온라인이 오프라인을 대체할 수 없을 것이라 생각했지만, 코로나의 위력은 여기에도 도전장을 던지고 있습니다. 교회로 모여 함께 만남의 공동체를 이루는 것을 우리는 양보할 수 없습니다. 그러나, 동시에 온라인 예배와 기도회, 정제된 성경공부를 자연스럽고 친근하게 화면으로 다가가는 일을 병행해야 할 것입니다.

After Coronavirus (1)

BC & AC are new language terms made these days. They are used to refer to before and after Coronavirus. It means that we will not be going back to the world before Coronavirus, and the world after will be changed to a ‘New normal’. I still do not forget the shock of 9.11. Many things have changed since then. From my experience, airport culture has changed. Taking off shoes at the airport and not being able to get through airport security with bottled water were awkward for a long time. Going through careful security screening when returning to US from overseas made me feel like a criminal. With system, which I use, the process of re-entering has become less cumbersome.

I expect one of the changes we will see after Coronavirus is again the process of entry and exit. Process of entry/exit at airports will become tougher. Even entering public places will become tough. Where crowds gather like sports events, concerts, and even worship places will become harder to enter for the foreseeable future. We are already screened for guns and weapons when entering concerts or sport events. Now there will additional station to check our body temperatures. Church will not be an exception. This place of worship, where everyone should be welcomed and treated like VIPs, may have to turn some people away as we check people’s temperatures. After Coronavirus, we will no longer hug or shake hands to greet each other. Greeting while social distancing will become the new etiquette.

We are at a situation where, unless we can objectively trust each other’s health, we cannot worship and that may be awkward for the first-time visitors to church. In the midst of social changes after Coronavirus, lowering the threshold for first-time visitors despite online invisibility, and no matter how unconventional it may be, our task is to provide safety net of fellowship like face-to-face off-line conversations. Not only that, we will need to continuously provide quality materials for training in faith and by producing worship materials for children. We will have to engage in the righteous fight against Internet’s overflowing secular material and cultural battle. It is clear that online communication is not just a temporary measure during this time of Coronavirus. It is an area that must be developed even after Coronavirus. As online communication becomes global, it will have a huge effect on how we do missions. (This will be covered next week) We had online classes and even traffic schools were online before Coronavirus. After Coronavirus, unless schools and companies can communicate quality contents online, they will naturally become extinct. Even the churches we thought could never be replaced with online are being challenged by Coronavirus. Church cannot yield to not being able to meet together as a community. However, we must parallel our efforts and approach the screen with affection for online worship, prayer meetings, and Bible Study.
