얼마 전 미식축구 풋볼 결승전인 수퍼볼을 재미있게 보았습니다. 작년 우승팀인 캔자스 시티와 플로리다 탬파베이 팀이 격돌하는 흥미진진한 게임이었습니다. 특별히 제가 응원하던 뉴잉글랜드 팀에서 탬파베이 팀으로 적을 옮긴 전설적인 쿼터백 탐 브래디가 새 팀을 데리고 결승전까지 간 것이 화제가 되었습니다. 가장 젊고 재능이 뛰어난, 시즌 성적이 최고였던 캔자스시티 팀의 쿼터백과 비교되면서 가장 나이 많은 쿼터백으로 수퍼볼을 뛰는 선수가 된 탐 브래디는, 지난 20년간 뉴잉글랜드 팀에서 화려한 진기록을 가지고 있었지만 수명이 다했기에 방출된다는 소문도 있었습니다. 늘 응원하던 팀이 아닌, 다른 팀의 유니폼을 입고 뛰는 탐 브래디 선수가 짠해 보이기까지 했습니다. 그러나, 지난 20년을 응원했던 탐 브래디를 팬데믹 상황에 진행된 풋볼 시즌의 결승전에서 보게 된 것은 큰 기쁨이었습니다. 모든 미디어와 전문가의 예상을 뒤엎고, 결과는 탐 브래디의 승리였습니다. 개인적으로 7번째 수퍼볼의 승자가 되었고, 가장 나이 많은 쿼터백으로 우승한 진기록을 이어갔습니다.

풋볼이 낯선 분들에게는 재미없는 경기이지만, 풋볼은 다른 구기 종목과는 그 경기 패턴이 다릅니다. 축구나 배구는 그야 말로 모든 선수가 발휘해야 할 기량의 몫이 비슷하다고 할 수 있습니다. 그야말로 팀워크입니다. 그런데 풋볼은 그 팀워크에 더하여 사령탑이 직접 필드에서 뛰는 경기로서 쿼터백이 그 사령탑이라고 할 수 있습니다. 물론 코치들이 계속 작전 명령을 내리지만, 수시로 변하는 필드의 상황에서 순간적인 판단으로 게임을 운영해 가는 책임은 쿼터백에게 있습니다. 풋볼은 마치 두 나라의 전쟁과 같습니다. 모든 군사들이 혼연일체가 되어 싸우는 것이 중요하지만, 군사들의 사기를 진작하며 이끌고 가는 사령탑이 전쟁 승리의 관건이듯, 풋볼 경기는 그만큼 쿼터백이 중요합니다. 그래서 이번 수퍼볼 승리의 분석에, 탐 브래디가 어떻게 새 팀에 들어가자마자 팀원들의 신뢰를 얻고, 전쟁에서 군사들이 목숨 걸고 싸우듯이, 모든 선수들이 쿼터백을 위해서 최선을 다해 싸우게 되었는지가 모두의 관심이었습니다. 지금까지 전설적인 기록을 세웠던 이전 뉴잉글랜드 팀과는 그의 기량과 코치와 환상적인 호흡이 그 원인이었다면 지금 탬파베이 팀에서는 탁월한 그의 리더십이 새롭게 평가받게 되었습니다. 객관적으로 쿼터백의 기량은 상대팀이 훨씬 뛰어났습니다. 승리 후 인터뷰하는 선수들마다 탐 브래디를 칭찬하며 위대한 선수라고 치켜세우는 것을 보면, 그는 새 팀에서 첫해에 그 리더십을 보이지 않게 구축했고, 결국 그 리더십이 수퍼볼 우승의 원인이었다는 분석입니다. 풋볼 경기를 보면서 깨달은 리더십은 혼자만 잘해서 되는 것이 아니라는 것입니다. 자기가 할 수 있는 역량을 최대한으로 끌어내는 각고의 훈련이 분명 있을 것입니다. 그것도 없이 리더십에 오를 수는 없을 것입니다. 그러나, 리더는 팀원들 모두가 다 같이 최대의 역량을 내도록 이끌어 주면서 같이 경기를 즐길 수 있게 하는 자입니다.

Leadership learned from Tom Brady

Not long ago, I enjoyed watching Super Bowl, American football final. It was an exciting game between Super Bowl winner from last year, Kansas City, and Tampa Bay Florida. Legendary quarterback Tom Brady moved from New England team, my team, to Tampa Bay, and led his new team to victory. This became a big news. Tom Brady who is the oldest quarterback to compete in Super Bowl was compared to Kansas City quarterback who is the youngest and talented with best season record. Although Tom Brady led New England team for 20 years with colorful records, there were rumors that his release from the team was due to his age. Seeing him wear a different team uniform from the team I have rooted for all these years felt sad. However, I had great joy watching Tom Brady, who I have rooted for 20 years, in this season’s football final under the pandemic situation. The result was that Tom Brady won overturning all media and expert predictions. Personally, he has now won 7 Super Bowl Games and has set a new record for the oldest quarterback to win.

Those who are unfamiliar with the game may find this writing boring. Football has different game pattern than other ball games. You could say soccer and basketball require each player to perform similar amount of work for the team. That is teamwork. However, because football’s teamwork requires a command center to run in the field, you could say that the quarterback is the command center of the team. Of course, coaches continuously give strategy commands, but with continuous changes of field situation, the responsibility of making instant judgment of the situation and carrying out the game lies with the quarterback. Football is a lot like a war between two countries. It’s important for all soldiers to unite and fight, but the command center to lead the soldiers and assessing their morale is the key to victory. Similarly, a quarterback is that important in a football game. When analyzing this Super Bowl victory, the interest was on how Tom Brady, as a new member of a team, gained trust from his teammates, and like soldiers going to war with their lives on the line, how all the teammates gave their best to fight for the new quarterback. New England, his previous team, where he set legendary records and succeeded due to fantastic teamwork between his skills and coaching. With Tampa Bay team, his leadership has been newly appreciated. Objectively, the opposing team’s quarterback had better skills. When players were interviewed after the victory, every one of them praised Tom Brady and called him a great athlete. It has been assessed that with his new team, he has built his leadership behind the scenes. That leadership was the reason for their victory. What I realized watching the football game is that leadership is not doing things well alone. There was definitely training and determination to bring out one’s full capacity. Leadership is not possible without that kind of effort. However, a leader is someone
who leads a team to do their best together and to enjoy the race together.
