Special Day That Isn’t Special
Rev. Peter Joo
As usual, I open my eyes to the sound of alarm. I brush my teeth, wash my face, get dressed, and head to church for prayer. I return home after prayer to my family, who are ready and waiting, for a morning walk around the neighborhood. We eat breakfast and, with a quick send off from my family, I head back to church. As soon as I arrive at church, I check on the work that I need to do for the day. I work diligently, crossing out each to-do item. Before you know it, the day is done. As soon as I return home, kids run out to the sound of front door opening as if they had been waiting. After dinner we have family time of exercising, drinking tea, playing games, or watching drama. Afterwards, we scatter to our rooms to close the day and go to sleep. They say pastor’s life is repetitive without much changes daily. Coronaviru has made it even simpler and repetitive like squirrel’s wheel. In this daily repetitiveness, if there’s difference or change, there is time for family to be together, morning and night. If it weren’t for this Coronavirus, I wonder if my high school kids will see me off to work in the morning and eat dinner together as a family, and play a game of basketball. Even though my daily life feels redundant, I am thankful.
Neitzsche asked in the book
Nowadays limitations on where we can go and what we can do have simplified our lives and made repetitive without change. If your day repeats endlessly, do you think you will fall into despair? Or will you be thrilled? If it is despair, then what kind of day will thrill you to repeat? It’s not that a special day is given to us. The fact that we have been given a day is special grace. Even, in our own view, that one-day may just be a repeat of an average day. In order to give us that one-day, God faithfully runs the universe and loves us enough to send His only Son, Jesus Christ, causing anyone to live each day with excitement and thankfulness. Let’s think back now. What kind of day is today for us?
They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. (Lam 3:23)
