요즘 사람들이 제일 아쉬워하는 것이 여행이라고 합니다. 코로나 팬데믹으로 인해 세계 모든 나라가 닫혔고, 특히 미국에서 오는 관광객들은 원천봉쇄되어 미국에서 다른 나라로 여행을 가는 것이 불가능해졌습니다. 우리가 사는 미국은 이제 세계에서 가장 위험한 나라가 되어, 세계 어디를 가도 상당 기간 격리당한 채 지내야 한다고 하니 난감한 일이 아닐 수 없습니다. 세계에서 가장 많은 나라에 선교사를 보낸 나라가 미국입니다. 당연히 가장 많은 선교헌금을 보내는 나라도 미국입니다. 헌금은 은행을 통해 보낸다고 하지만, 사람이 갈 수도 사람을 보낼 수도 없게 되었으니 참으로 안타까운 일입니다. 세상을 살다가 이런 날도 오나 싶은 그런 일을 매일매일 겪고 있습니다.

저의 제2의 고향 필라델피아도 이제는 다른 주에서 방문하면 격리를 요구한다고 들었습니다. 이젠 국내에서도 서로 격리하는 법을 만들어 실행하고 있으니 답답한 일입니다. 여행 갈 수 없다는 말에 오히려 여행을 더가고 싶어 지는 것이 사람인지라 갑갑한 상황을 벗어나 자유를 찾아 나가고 싶은 증상들이 나타납니다. 복음 들고 나가라고 했는데 그 말씀에 순종하지 않으니까 하나님께서 “그럼, 집에 있어 보렴” 하시는 것 같습니다.

지난 토요일부터 캘리포니아 거의 모든 지역에 통행금지가 발효되었습니다. 한국에서 살 때 통행금지가 있었던 것이 기억납니다. 통행금지가 풀리는 사이렌 소리와 함께 교회마다 새벽기도를 알리는 종소리가 났었습니다. “오직 성령이 너희에게 임하시면 너희가 권능을 받고 예루살렘과 온 유대와 사마리아와 땅끝까지 이르러 내 증인이 되리라”(행 1:8)고 하셨는데, 예루살렘에만 머물 수밖에 없는 작금의 상황에 여행의 욕구를 진작시켜 세계 선교를 향한 하나님의 뜻을 이루어 가시는 것이 아닌가 생각해 봅니다.

집 나가면 고생이라는 말이 있는데 왜 우리는 집에서 나가지 말라는 명령에 갑갑해하고, 여행을 가고 싶어 안달이 날까요? 아마, 우리의 DNA에 세계선교를 향한 유전인자를 하나님이 심어 놓은 것이 아닌가 싶습니다. 여행의 마지막 날은 못 가본 데가 생각이 나서 바빠지듯이 우리의 발걸음도 아직도 복음이 들어가지 못한 지역들이 자꾸 생각나 바빠지고 있습니다. 미전도종족을 향한 400일 기도를 마쳤는데, 아직도 집에 가둬두시는 지금의 상황은 이보 전진을 위한 일보 후퇴의 하나님의 선교전략 같습니다. 만약, 오늘도 여행 가고 싶은 맘으로 충만하시면 선교사로 복음의 마당발을 넓히라는 하나님의 뜻이 있을 수 있으니, 통행금지된 추수감사 주일에 오히려 감사드리며 소명을 찾는 기도에 들어가시기 바랍니다.

Pandemic and Thanksgiving

One of the things people miss the most now days is traveling. All countries in the world closed their borders due to pandemic. Travelers from U.S. are blocked, making travel to other countries impossible. U.S. has become the most dangerous country in the world. You will be quarantined for a length of time wherever you go making things very difficult. U.S. sends the greatest number of missionaries in the world. Obviously, U.S. is the country that sends the most missions offering. You can wire the offering, but no one can go, or send anyone. That makes situation difficult. Every day, we are experiencing what we thought were not possible.

I heard my second hometown, Philadelphia, is also requiring for those visiting from other states to quarantine. It’s stifling that there are rules for quarantine even when traveling within the country. Hearing that we cannot travel makes us want to travel even more, bringing symptoms of wanting to get out of the situation to find freedom. It’s as if God is telling us, “Then, stay home” for not obeying His command to go out with the gospel.

Since Saturday, State of California announced a curfew for most of the areas. I remember curfew from when I used to live in Korea. With a siren signaling the end of curfew time, church bells would ring out signaling the early morning service. I wonder if Jesus said, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth”(Acts 1:8) to stimulate, in the situation that they could not remain in Jerusalem, their desire to travel to guide them toward His will for world mission.

There is a saying that when you leave home, there’s suffering. With the command to stay home, why do we get frustrated and can’t keep from wanting to travel? Perhaps God may have planted a DNA in us for world missions. On the last day of travel, we usually become busy making sure to see everything that we have thought about. Similarly, we become busy thinking about all the places where the gospel hasn’t reached. We ended 400 days of prayer for unreached people, but being locked up in our home make us feel like God’s mission strategy is to regress in preparation for greater progress. If your heart is full of desire to travel, there could be God’s will for you to expand your foot steps into mission fields. On this curfew-bound Thanksgiving, be thankful and enter into prayer to seek your calling.
