제가 좋아하는 미식축구 시즌이 돌아왔습니다. 옛날처럼 경기 전체를 3시간 동안 앉아서 볼 시간이 만만치 않아 하이라이트만 챙겨서 보지만, 보면 볼수록 미식축구는 참 재미있습니다. 물론 경기 규칙을 모르면 이처럼 재미없는 경기도 없을 것입니다. 농구나, 야구처럼 특정한 선수의 개인기가 돋보이는 것도 아니고, 서로 힘겨루기하면서 땅을 따먹는 경기가 별 볼 일 없는 것처럼 보일 것입니다. 그러나, 미식축구가 재미있는 이유는 예측할 수 없는 수많은 변수가 있는 경기이기 때문입니다. 공의 생김새도 어디로 튈지 모르는 타원형이지만, 경기 도중 공을 놓치는 경우가 종종 일어나면서 전세가 뒤바뀌고 상대방 팀이 도중에 가로채는 일도 흔히 일어나면서 경기의 재미를 더합니다. 참 희한한 것은 축구나 야구 같은 다른 구기 종목은 세계적으로 뻗어 가는데, 미식축구는 말 그대로 ‘미식’에 머뭅니다. 미국 말고 미식축구가 다른 나라에 리그가 있다는 말은 아직 들어보지 못했습니다.

리그가 만들어지려면 저변 인구가 있어야 합니다. 예를 들어, 프로팀이 만들어지려면 대학팀이 있어야 하고 대학팀이 있으려면 고등학교 풋볼팀이 활성화 되어야 한다는 것입니다. 다른 나라에선 대부분 경기 규칙도 모르는데, 풋볼을 하고 싶은 아이들도 없을 것이고, 당연히 풋볼팀이 있는 고등학교도 아마 찾아보기 힘들 것입니다.

우리 기도의 현장이 풋볼 경기라면 기도 풋볼 경기는 저변 인구가 받쳐주어야 가능합니다. 헵시바 1000을 외치며 달려오면서 그 기도의 숫자 1000을 훌쩍 넘겼지만, 그래도 고삐를 놓지 않고, 헵시바 일천은 계속 갑니다. 우리 자녀들이 기도의 숫자에 들어오기까지 베델은 계속 기도 운동을 할 것입니다. ‘기도 안 하고 잘 되면 축복이 아니라, 재앙이다’를 외치며 갈 것입니다. 아이들이 새벽기도에서 은혜받는 헵시바를 지향할 것입니다. 아이들이 부모 할아버지 할머니를 깨워 새벽기도에 오는 베델교회로 나아갈 것입니다. 그래서 4대가 함께 베델을 다니는 교회가 되었으면 좋겠습니다. 그 출발은 1세와 1.5세 때론 완전히 영어권이라도 헵시바를 사모하고 기대하는 예배로 새로운 전환기를 만들어 가고자 기도 중입니다. ‘기도하면 됩니다!’를 외쳤던 선배들의 기도에 ‘1세 2세가 기도로 하나 되면 됩니다!’ 구호로 더 구체적인 기도의 동력을 꿈꿉니다. 계속 진행되는 민수기 큐티인 묵상을 통해서 우리가 모두 그 헵시바 1000, 기도의 수에 계수되기를 원합니다. ‘Oh, when the saints go marchin’ in … Lord I want to be in that number~’ 찬양하며 전진합시다.

Growing the Base Population of Prayers

My favorite American football season has returned. I only get to watch highlights since I don’t have time to sit for 3 hours to watch an entire game like I used to in the past, but the more I watch it, the more I find myself enjoying this sport. If you don’t know the rules of the game, there is nothing more boring than this game. Unlike basketball or baseball, it doesn’t show ability of a select player and although a game that’s about gaining grounds by strength may not be too exciting, the reason American football is fun is because of its unpredictability being that the shape of the ball is oval; often there are dropped balls in the middle of the game; interceptions which add to the fun of the game and what’s amazing is that although ball games like soccer and baseball are popular throughout the world, American football remains unrecognized to the world. In fact, I have not heard of any American football leagues anywhere in other countries.

To form a league, there has to be a base population of interest. For example, in order to form a pro team, you need to have college teams. In order to form a college team, you must have active high school football teams. Most countries don’t know the game rules, so it’s unlikely that they will have kids interested in playing American football and so it would seem that it would be hard to find any high schools with a football team.

Likewise, if our prayers were like a football game, our prayer football is only made possible when there is a base population to participate. Upon Hepzibah 1000, we ran shouting and achieved over 1000 prayers. Without letting go of the rein, it is in our best interest that Hepzibah 1000 will continue. We hope that Bethel will continue its prayer movement until our children join the number of prayers and we hope we will continue and shout ‘If things are well without prayers, then it’s not a blessing but a curse.’ As we think upon our children, we will aim for our children to continue to receive God’s grace at our early morning prayer services. To achieve this, Bethel Church will move forward to having our children awake their parents and grandparents and it is my prayer that Bethel can be a church where 4 generations come together starting with the 1st and 1.5, and even English speaking generation. I pray that this will be a new turning point and I envision a concrete prayer movement where we shout ‘1st & 2nd generation, pray as one’ from the prayers of our forefathers shouting ‘Just pray!’ With our current QT on Numbers, may we all be listed in the number of prayers, Hepzibah 1000. Let’s praise and march forward hoping to be in that numbers while the saints go marching in!
