지난번 세미나 때, 김양재 목사님이 선물 하나를 전달해 주셨습니다. 저의 설교를 온라인으로 들은 청주의 한 자매가 목사님이 미국 가신다는 얘기를 듣고, 감사의 마음을 전하고 싶어 택배로 선물을 보내왔다며, 저에게 전해 주셨습니다. 캘리그래피를 써서 예쁜 액자에 넣어서 보내온 선물이었습니다. 저도 요즘 캘리그래피를 하는지라 얼마나 잘 쓴 것인지 한눈에 알아볼 수 있었습니다. 더욱 놀란 것은 이 선물을 보내준 자매는 장애로 몸이 불편한 분이었습니다. 그래서 이 선물이 더 값지고 의미가 있었습니다. 한 번도 얼굴을 보지 못한 자매가 보내온 액자를 책상 앞에 놓고 보면서, 절친이 보내온 선물인 양 친근함마저 느낍니다. 따뜻한 마음이 전해져 옵니다. 저도 성도님들이 개업할 때면, 가게에 들러 액자를 고르고, 그려 놓은 그림 중 적당한 것을 골라서, 그날 전해드릴 말씀을 캘리그래피로 적습니다. 그다음에 그림을 사이즈에 맞게 액자에 넣어서, 꼼꼼하게 강력 테이프로 붙이고, 기도하면서 액자를 만들고 예쁘게 포장해서 심방 후 전달하는 과정이 있습니다. 그런 과정을 알기에 태평양을 넘어, 심부름 하시기도 너무 황송한 목사님의 손길을 통해 전달받으니, 그 따뜻한 정성스런 손길이 고스란히 느껴지는 감동이 있었습니다. 진실이라는 이름의 자매의 사랑과 기도가 듬뿍 담긴 선물을 보며, 오늘도 감사가 넘칩니다.

더 감사한 것은 액자에 말씀이 적혀 있어서 매일 새 결심을 하게 하는 교훈이 된다는 것입니다. 얼굴도 보지 못한 자매의 작은 선물이지만 매일 또 한 사람의 하루를 감사와 새로운 각오로 시작하게 하는 힘이 있습니다. 그리고, 오늘도 장애를 지고 살아가는 진실 양을 위해 기도하게 됩니다. “이 풍랑 인하여 더 빨리 가는 은혜가 있게 하시고, 사도바울이 가진 몸의 가시가, 내 은혜가 족한 줄 알고 능력 있게 쓰임 받았듯이, 장애가 하나님 능력의 분출구가 되게 하시고, 하나님 영광을 드러내는 창구가 되게 하옵소서”

하나님이 우리에게 보내신 선물 중의 선물이 우리 주 예수님이십니다. 무조건 감사하고, 무조건 아멘 해야 함에도 그 간단한 감사 기도가 나오지 못할 때가 많은데, 얼굴도 모르는 분의 선물이 오늘도 우리 생애 최고의 선물인 주님을 기억하게 합니다. 우리도 내 주변에 주님의 십자가 사랑을 생각나게 하는 선물이 됩시다. 우리의 행동이 사랑의 글씨가 되고, 은혜라 부르는 액자의 캘리그래프가 되어 한 자 한 자 새겨져 그 누군가의 책상 위에 올려지는 선물이 됩시다.

A Warm-hearted Gift

I received a gift from Pastor Yang-Jae Kim during our recent seminar. This gift was from a woman living in Chung-Ju who had heard my message online when I preached in Korea. She heard that Pastor Kim is going to U.S. and she preferred that the gift is delivered directly in person rather than via shipment. The gift was a beautiful framed artwork of Calligraphy. I also took an interest in Calligraphy recently and so, I realized right away that this was a beautiful calligraphic writing. But the bigger surprise was the fact that this person who sent the gift was a blind. Thus, this gift was more precious with great sentimental value. Even though I received the gift from a person I never met, each time I look at it, which is placed on my desk, I feel as though if it is from a close friend as I can feel the warm heart. Whenever I visit a member of the congregation during the grand opening of a new business, I usually take a frame of my own artwork of Calligraphy written with proper words to congratulate them. I carefully safeguarded with tapes, then I place them in a nice gift wrap. So I know the warm-heart through this gift which is prepared with sincere prayer, knowing it would go across the Pacific Ocean and be delivered through the hands of the admired pastor. So her name is known as “Jin-shil,” and even today, I am filled with thanksgiving just by looking at the gift made with love and prayer.

But what’s more grateful are the words written within the frame as I commit myself once again to the Lord’s ministry. A small gift from a person I never met before, but it has such a powerful message that gives hope with daily thanksgiving and a new resolution. And so today, I pray for Jin-shil because she must live with this disability. “Let this storm pass quickly, and just like the thorn (burden) which Apostle Paul carried was enough grace in accomplishing God’s powerful work, let this blindness be used as a powerful fountain of salvation and to become the storage of God’s amazing glory.”

The gift of all Gift from God is our Savior, Lord Jesus. And for this wonderful gift, we are to give a mandatory thanksgiving and unconditional “Amen.” However, we fall too short in this simple task of thanksgiving. But today, a gift from Jin-shil, a blind person from Chung-Ju, whom I have not met, reminds me that the greatest gift is our Lord Jesus. So I challenge everyone, let us become the “warm-hearted gift” to remind our friends and neighbors, the true gift of Love through the Cross carried by Christ. And I pray that our actions might shout out the words of love that are perfectly framed, just like the artwork of Calligraphy, that each and every word stand out on that desk which it stands.
