문제는 한 알의 밀이 죽고 싶은데, 죽고 싶은 것이 없다는 것입니다. 목숨을 걸고 싸울 만한 것이 이 땅에 없다는 것입니다. 염세적인 인생관을 가지면, 모든 세상은 불만 그 자체입니다. 다 맘에 안 들고, 남의 허물만 보는 자들은 죽을 만한 것이 없어서 혼자 그대로 죽지 않고, 남아 있는 한 알의 밀과 같습니다. 영국의 크리스천 여류작가 Dorothy L. Sayers(1893-1957)는 죄를 이렇게 규명한 것으로 유명합니다.
죄, 세상에서는 이것을 융통성이라 부른다. 그러나, 지옥에선 ‘절망’이라고 부른다. 아무것도 믿지 못하고, 어느 것도 사랑하지 못하고, 알려고도 하지 않고, 누구와도 교제하지 않고, 재미있어하는 것도 없고, 미워하는 것도 없고, 인생의 목적을 찾을 수도 없고, 살 이유도 없고, 그냥 목숨이 붙어 있어서 살아가는데, 그 이유는 목숨 걸만한 것을 찾지 못했기 때문이다. In the world it is called Tolerance, but in hell it is called Despair…the sin that believes in nothing, cares for nothing, seeks to know nothing, interferes with nothing, enjoys nothing, hates nothing, finds purpose in nothing, lives for nothing, and remains alive because there is nothing for which it will die.
목숨 걸만한 것을 찾지 못한 이유는 한마디로 죄 때문입니다. 죄는 우리 자아를 펄펄 살게 만듭니다. 존재감을 드러내기 위해, 다시 말해 안 죽으려고 자기주장의 죄를 노골화합니다. 그러나, 아무리 목소리가 커도 곱하기 1입 니다. 절대로 자신의 존재감은 커지지 않습니다. 오히려 ‘저런 인간은 안돼’ 평가를 받고, 사회적으로 왕따당하기 쉽습니다. 그런데, 또 하나의 문제가 있습니다. 목숨 걸 것이 없다고 투덜대는 인간들을 위해 우리 예수님은 목숨을 거신 것입니다. 아니, 목숨을 주셨습니다. 그것이 고난 주간의 의미입니다. 나를 위해 목숨 건 예수님처럼, 우리도 주님을 위해 목숨 비슷한 것이라도 걸고 살아야 하지 않을까요?
Something To Die For

Famous saying by General Yi Soonshin “To die is to live” and “to live is to die” means that if you struggle to live, you will die, and if you give into death, you will live. His saying became mythical because of what he did at Myeongryang Great Battle. He sunk Japanese ships that were 10 times the number of his remaining 12 ships. Jesus spoke similar words 1500 years prior to General Yi Soonshin. “Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life.” (John 12:25) He did not say this to threaten life, but to speak about our position and attitude of life. As Jesus spoke these words, He gave a parable of single kernel of wheat. “Unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed.
But if it dies, it produces many seeds.” (John 12:24) If a single kernel of wheat struggles to live, no matter how much it tries, it will only remain a single seed. That is exactly it. But, if we let go of ourselves, we will multiply exponentially and increase in size and harvest greatly. This is the biblical principle of fruitful life.
The problem is that a single grain of wheat wants to lay down its life, but there’s nothing to die for. With pessimistic view of life, the world is nothing but dissatisfaction. Those that only look to fault of others, with nothing to die for, will struggle to survive and only remain as a single seed. England’s Christian female writer Dorothy L. Sayers(1893-1957) is famous for identifying sin this way.
In the world it is called Tolerance, but in hell it is called Despair…the sin that believes in nothing, cares for nothing, seeks to know nothing, interferes with nothing, enjoys nothing, hates nothing, finds purpose in nothing, lives for nothing, and remains alive because there is nothing for which it will die.
In one word, it is because of sin that we can’t find anything to die for. Sin makes our selfishness thrive. Another words, we live to make ourselves known, the sin of self-assertion keeps us struggling so that we won’t die. But, no matter how loud you may be, you still remain a single seed. Our existence does not get any bigger. Instead, we would be easily criticized and ostracized by society. There’s another problem. Jesus laid down His life for those who complain that there’s nothing to die for. Actually, He gave His life. That is the meaning of Passion Week. Like Jesus, who lay down His life for us, shouldn’t we lay down our lives, or at least what resembles life, for Him?
