아내가 너무도 좋아하는 남자 배우, 톰 크루즈의 미션 임파서블 7 영화가 개봉되었습니다. 아직은 보지 못했지만, 톰 크루즈가 직접 영화를 찍는 트레일러가 나왔는데, 톰 크루즈는 위험한 액션을 스턴트맨을 쓰지 않고 직접 찍는 것으로 유명합니다. 영화 속에 나타나는 스릴과 긴장감을 그대로 드러내기 위해선 직접 위험을 무릅쓰고 찍어야 한다는 그의 소신 때문입니다. 오토바이를 타고 낭떠러지로 추락하는 장면이었는데, 한 장면을 찍기 위해 하루에도 7번 이상 뛰어내리면서 최상의 장면을 찍는 것을 보았습니다. 감독과 촬영에 동원되는 모든 사람조차 긴장할 수밖에 없는 상황에서 다들 조심하라고 하는데, 그때 톰 크루즈가 한 말이 인상적이었습니다. “Don’t be careful. Be confident!(조심하지 말고 자신감을 가져라!)” 이 말을 하고 씩~ 웃으며 다시 오토바이 타고 절벽 아래로 나는 모습은 저로 하여금 영화를 더 보고 싶게 합니다. 위험한 일을 할 때는 조심스러워하면 할수록 더 긴장되어 안 될 때가 많습니다. 오히려 자신감을 가지고 도전할 때 잘 될 확률이 높습니다.

직업 중 가장 위험한 직업은 무엇일까요? 인명 피해가 많은 순으로 벌목공이나 원양어선 어부 순으로 조사되어 있습니다만, 어느 기자는 한국 대통령만큼 위험한 직업은 없다고 보고 했습니다. 박정희 대통령은 암살당하고, 노무현 대통령은 자살하고, 이명박 대통령은 감옥 가고, 박근혜 대통령은 탄핵 당한 후 감옥에 가는 것을 보면 설득력이 있습니다. 그러나 목회도 못지않게 위험한 직업인 것 같습니다. 요즘 5년을 꾸준히 한 교회에서 목회하는 사역자를 찾기가 쉽지 않습니다. 많은 후배 목회자 중에 목회의 현장에서 심한 스트레스와 우울증에 시달리는 분들을 보게 됩니다. 팔방미인을 원하는 교회의 요구에 턱 없이 부족한 인간 목회자는 마치 목회가 지뢰밭을 걷는 것과 같다는 고백을 합니다. 단순히 요즘 목회자는 맷집이 약해서 그렇다고 말할 수 없는 어려운 현실이 목회의 현실에 있습니다. 만능 설교가에 만능 행정가, 따뜻한 마음에 강직한 추진력, 밤잠 안 자고 뛰어도 강철같은 건강, 인재를 적재적소에 쓸 줄 아는 최고 관리인, 또한 자신에 대해서는 철저한 스캔들-프리 자기관리, 목사 부인은 하해와 같은 사랑의 화신이어야 하고, 자녀들은 모든 면에 뛰어난 흠 없는 자녀이어야 합니다. 이 중 어느 하나가 잘못되면 지뢰를 밟는 것이 목회라고 합니다. 요즘 미국이나 한국이나, 신학교마다 지원 학생 미달입니다. 굳이 그 위험한 직업을 선택하기 위해 신학교에 갈 필요를 느끼지 못하는 것입니다. 저는 요즘 후배들에게 조심스럽게 목회하라는 말보다, 자신 있게 목회하라는 말을 자꾸 하고 싶습니다. 지뢰밭 무서워하지 말고, 복음의 폭탄을 던지며, 하나님 앞에서 떳떳이 목회하라고 말하고 싶습니다. 이번 주는 목회자들과 함께 미션 임파서블 7 영화를 보러 가야겠습니다.

Mission Impossible

My wife’s favorite male actor, Tom Cruise’s 7th Mission Impossible movie has been released in theatres. I haven’t seen it yet. There is a trailer of Tom Cruise filming the movie himself. Tom Cruise is known for doing his own stunts instead of using a stunt double. He does this out of conviction that, in order to capture the thrill and tension of the movie scene, he must do stunts himself regardless of danger. There is a scene where he jumps off a cliff riding on a motorcycle. In order to film this one scene, he had to jump more than 7 times in a day to capture the best scene. Director and everyone involved in making this movie were nervous and told him to be careful. I was impressed when Tom Cruise said, “Don’t be careful. Be confident!”. With a smile he gets on the motorcycle and jumps off the cliff again. This image really made me want to see the movie. We need to be careful when faced with dangerous work. The more we do it, the more we become nervous, and we often fail. However, if we challenge ourselves and do it with confidence, there is a greater chance that we will succeed.

What is the most dangerous job? It is reported as lumberjack and then ocean fisherman, in terms of high loss of life. One reporter also described that there is no more dangerous job than being Korea’s President. It’s quite convincing when you see that President Junghee Park was assassinated, President Mooyun Noh committed suicide, President Myungbak Lee went to prison, and President Gunhae Park was impeached and then sent to prison. Being a pastor is just as dangerous. It’s difficult to find a pastor who has served more than five years for one church. Many of my younger colleagues suffer from stress and depression working in their ministries. Working for a church that wants all-around perfectionist, pastors confess that, as an imperfect pastor, their ministry is like walking on a mine field. Reality of ministry is difficult. It’s not as simple as to say that pastors lack tenacity. You have to be an allaround preacher and an all-around administrator, warm hearted with upright driving force, with health of steel even without sleeping at nights, the best manager who knows how to place right people in the right places, and guard oneself to be scandal free. Pastor’s wife must possess love like an ocean. Their children must be flawless, excelling in every area. If any of these areas went wrong, their ministry becomes like stepping on a mine. Seminaries are lacking student applicants nowadays in Korea as well as in U.S. People don’t feel the need to attend seminary to choose such a dangerous job. Rather than to say to do ministry carefully, I like to tell my younger colleagues to do the ministry with confidence. Don’t be afraid of the mine field. Instead, throw the grenade of gospel and do ministry with confidence before God. I think I will take my pastoral staff this week to see the movie Mission Impossible.
