지난 주말 우리는 ‘제자도’라는 주제로 신학강좌를 열었습니다. 부흥회라면 모를까, 신학강좌라는 타이틀로 집회가 가능할까 하는 질문은 8년 전 신학강좌를 했을 때부터 있었던 질문이었습니다. 그러나, 신학강좌 집회에도 부흥회만큼의 반향이 회중 가운데 있었습니다. 처음으로 신학강좌를 열던 2016년에 한 성도님이 Facebook에 남긴 피드백은 이렇습니다.

“평생 교회를 다녔지만, 교회에서 영성집회니, 부흥회니 그런 것은 많이 봤지만 특별 집회로 신학강좌를 하는 것은 처음이네요. 그런데, 무지 좋았습니다. 특히나 마지막 날 오늘 해방 전후로 한 한국 교회사와 피날레를 장식한 패널 시간도 멋있었구요. “한여름의 시원한 신학강좌” 제목부터 뭔가 이상한, 평신도들이 무슨 신학강좌를 시원하게 즐길까 싶었는데 아주 시원했습니다. 구약학 김희석 교수님, 교회사 박응규 교수님, 변증학 정승원 교수님, 설교학 채규현 교수님, 그리고 이 획기적인 멋진 판을 짜 놓으신 김한요 목사님… 더운날 감사했습니다.”

신학은 우리 신앙의 균형을 잡아 주는 틀과 같습니다. 우리 교회 제자훈련 교제 1단계도 바로 그 틀을 먼저 세우는 것에 고안되었습니다. 그 틀 위에 우리의 신앙을 건전히 세우는 것이 베델제자훈련의 철학입니다. 그리고, 그 틀이 바로 서면, 참된 제자의 삶을 사는데, 큰 힘이 될 것입니다. 그 힘은 바로 말씀의 힘입니다. 말씀을 이해하고, 바로 적용하는 힘은 신학에서 나옵니다. 우리가 신학이라는 말을 쓰지 않을 뿐이지, ‘나는 하나님만 알아주시면 돼’ 하며 섭섭한 마음을 털어 버리는 성도… ‘하나님만 알아주시면…’ 이 한마디에 무시당함과 잊혀짐의 섭섭함을 극복하며 일어납니다. 이것이 바로 고
난을 해석하는 신학입니다. 선택과 예정이라는 어려운 단어도, 우리를 끊임없이 유혹하는 자랑과 자만에서 지키는 힘입니다. 예정을 믿는 자마다 은혜를 깨닫습니다. 은혜를 깨달으면, 자기 잘난 맛이 아닌 십자가 구속의 능력으로 삽니다. 이번에 배운 제자도 역시 평신도가 업그레이드되는 것이 아니라, 예수 안에서 충만을 누리는 자가 성도요, 제자입니다. 할렐루야!

Correct Theology, Correct Disciple

This weekend we opened Theological Lectures series with a theme [Discipleship]. A question was asked since we began this Theological Lectures 8 years ago. That is how is a special assembly event possible with the title Theological Lectures instead of Revival. However, there was just as much of positive response echoing from congregation from Theological Lectures as that of a Revival. The first time we began Theological Lectures in 2016, one of our congregation members left feedback on Facebook.

I’ve attended church all my life. I’ve seen many spiritual revivals, but this was the first time I attended Theological Lectures as a special assembly. And it was wonderful. Especially, on the last day, a panel discussion of Korean Church history before and after the liberation as the finale was awesome. Event title “A Cool Theological Lectures in Midsummer” signaled something different. I wondered how lay people could enjoy theological lectures, but it was very cool. To Old Testament professor Heesuk Kim, Church History professor Ungkyu Park, Apologetics professor Seungwon Chung, Preaching professor Kyuhyun Chae, and Rev. Bryan Kim, who put together the great plan, Thank you on this hot day.

Theology is like a frame that sets our faith in correct form. Our church’s 1st step of discipleship training was designed to set that basic frame. The philosophy of Bethel Discipleship Training is to soundly build our faith on that frame. Also, when that frame stands correctly, it becomes the strength that helps us to live a righteous life of a disciple. That strength is the strength of the Word. To understand the Word and to apply correctly comes from theology. We might not use the word theology, but we say, “I’m fine as long as God knows” and shake off feeling sorry for oneselves… With one phrase “If God only knows…,” we overcome and rise from being dismissed and sadness of being forgotten. This is the theology that interprets suffering. Even the difficult words like chosen and predestined provide strength to keep us from temptations like boastfulness and pridefulness. We realize grace when we believe in predestination. When we realize grace, we live by the strength of salvation and not by our own goodness. What we have learned about discipleship this time around isn’t to upgrade ourselves as a believer, but to become a believer, and a disciple who can fully enjoy being in Christ. Hallelujah!
