“천국은 이와 같으니…”로 시작하는 예수님의 비유들을 수요예배 때 공부하면서, 여러 번 이미 연구하고 전한 말씀이지만, 준비할 때마다 새로운 은혜가 주어지는 것이 신기합니다. 밭에 감추인 보화를 우연히 발견한 후에는 밭을 사기 위해 자기의 소유를 다 팔아도 아깝지 않고, 오히려 기뻐하는 모습을 통해서, 천국을 소유한 사람의 변화되는 모습을 발견하게 됩니다. 사랑에 빠져 연애를 하면 주변 사람들이 미쳤다고 얘기합니다. 미치지 않고서야 밤새 잠 안 자고 전화에 매달릴 수가 있나요? 미치지 않고서야 여자 친구의 리포트를 자기 전공이 아닌데도 대신 써주겠다고 몇 날 며칠을 잠 안 자고 매달릴 수 있나요? 자기의 이상형을 발견한 연인도 이렇게 변하는데, 천국을 발견한 사람이 변하지 않을 수가 있을까요? 가치관이 변하고, 우선순위가 변하고, 시간 활용이 달라지고, 가는 곳이 달라지고, 만나는 사람들이 달라집니다. 밭에 감추인 보화를 발견한 자의 변화가 이것입니다. 반면에, 진주 장사가 값진 진주를 발견한 이후, 자기의 소유를 다 팔아 그 진주를 사는 이야기는 보화를 발견한 사람의 변화의 근거가 됩니다. 나를 값진 진주 같이 여겨 주셔서 자신의 소유를 다 팔아 나를 사신 하나님의 사랑을 깨닫게 되는 것입니다. 나 같은 죄인 살리려 독생자 예수 그리스도를 팔아, 나를 사신 사랑이 믿기지 않을 정도로 기뻐서 보화를 발견한 사람이, 본인 역시 자기 것을 팔아 그 보화를 누리는 것은 지극히 당연한 것이었습니다. 하나님이 나를 그렇게 사셨듯이, 우리도 이전에 내놓을 수 없었던 것을 내놓으면서 상상할 수 없는 보화를 소유한 기쁨을 누리게 됩니다. 영국의 대 설교가 스펄전 목사님은 ‘보화를 발견한 자의 변화는, 세 가지를 내려놓는 것을 보며 확인할 수 있다’고 했습니다. 첫째가 기존 선입관을 내려놓는 것입니다. 성경의 가치관과 대치되던 모든 세속적인 가치관들이 보화를 발견하게 되면 시시해집니다. 옛날에 아까워서 어쩔 줄 몰라하던 것을 아무렇지도 않게 버리게 됩니다. 둘째는 자기 의를 내려놓게 됩니다. 이전에 은근히 즐기던 자기의 업적과 자랑들도 더 이상 부끄러워 가지고 있지 못하고, 내려놓게 됩니다. 셋째는 죄의 쾌락을 내려놓게 된다고 했습니다. 도박이든, 약물이든 혹은 인간중독 같은 죄를 끊을 수 있는 용기가 생깁니다.

천국 백성인 성도님들은 값진 진주로 주님께 발견된 자입니다. 독생자 예수 그리스도의 핏값으로 사신 존재들입니다. 이렇게 존귀한 인생이 되었는데, 그 가치를 모르고 버려야 할 것을 아직도 들고 다니는 더러운 죄악은 없는지요? 보화를 기쁨으로 누리기 위해선 아낌없이 나의 죄를 버려야 합니다. 아니, 버리게 됩니다.

A Treasure and A Pearl

We began the Wednesday service with parables such as “The Kingdom of heaven is like (treasure)…,” and each time I prepare the message with these verses, I am so blessed with amazing grace. A person may not think twice about selling his possessions after discovering the hidden treasure. Likewise, we see how a joyful person can change when he discovers the possession of heaven. Most people would say that you are crazy when they see you fall in love. But how can you talk on the phone all night long without being so crazily in love? Without being crazy, how can you offer to write a report for your girlfriend, staying up night after night when the subject is not even your major field of study? Even such ideal lovers are willing to change, so how can you not change when you discover the treasure of heaven? This means that our values change, priorities change, use of time change, places we visit change, and the people we meet change. Those are the fruits (changes) from a person who discover the hidden treasures in the field. On the contrary, when a pearl salesman discovers a priceless pearl, he sells all of his possessions to gain that one pearl that is priceless, and this is evident of how a person that discover the treasure might change. This is how we can understand the love of God, that He sells all of His possession to purchase my own life because He values my life as the priceless “pearl”. The love of God is unfathomable knowing how Jesus Christ was sold to save a wretched sinner like me, and yet, it gives greatest joy that one who discovers the treasure might also sell his possessions in order to achieve that hidden treasure. And just as God purchased my life, we too should give up those possessions we desire, and achieve the unmatchable joy by possessing the treasure of heaven. A famous English Pastor Spurgeon said that a person who discovers this great Treasure can be confirmed through three major changes in their lives. First, we give up our preconception, meaning that all of our secular values that oppose our biblical standards become frivolous and meaningless when we discover this great Treasure. It also means our old sentimental values will no longer matter because we are able to let them go. Secondly, we are able to surrender our own righteousness. This means that we give up those boastful achievements and cannot possess them any longer because we simply feel embarrassed. Finally, we must let go of the sinful pleasures and delight, including gambling, drugs, and all other sinful addictions that hinder our faith.

Dear beloved members of congregation, we are all declared as citizens of His Kingdom discovered by our Lord Jesus with most valuable Treasure. And we are the very existence that are purchased with the precious blood of our only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. Even after becoming such precious life, do we still carry any sins which we should surrender? We should give up those earthy treasure (sins) if we truly desire the delights of heavenly Treasure. No… we actually need to discard those earthy treasure, but let Christ be our Treasure!
