한국에서 목회하시는 한 목사님으로부터 미주에 있는 목사님을 한 분 추천해 달라는 연락이 왔습니다. 미국에서 목회하시다가 한국의 교회로부터 청빙 받아 가신 분인데 본인이 조기 은퇴하시면서 미국 목회 경험이 있는 목회자를 찾는다는 것입니다. 한국에도 좋은 목회자들이 많지만, 가능하면 미국에서 목회한 경험이 있는 분을 찾고 싶다고 하십니다. 아무래도 미국에서 세계 공용어인 영어를 자유롭게 구사하고, 문화적으로도 한국적인 것을 넘어 세계적으로 나아가는데 이미 익숙해 있기 때문입니다. 교회가 가진 사명이 언어와 문화를 초월하여 복음을 전파하는 것이기에, 지역의 한계를 뛰어넘는 훈련된 목회자가 필요한 것이지요. 물론 미국에 있었다고 다 초문화적으로 되는 것은 아니지만, 해외에서 시야를 넓혔던 목회자를 교회가 선호하는 것은 이해가 됩니다.

옛날 어른 목사님이 하셨던 말씀이 기억납니다. “타향에서 배우는 것이 비록 낮잠을 자더라도 고향에서 출세하는 것보다 낫다.” 익숙한 환경에 평생 살면서 주어진 기득권을 누리며 사는 것보다, 맨땅에 헤딩하며 새로운 환경에서 자신의 한계에 좌충우돌하며 배우는 것이 많다는 교훈입니다. 그래서 우리는 유학도 가고, 세계대회에도 나가는 것입니다. 지금 한류가 대세지만, 이는 한국에만 머물며 한류가 된 것이 아니라, 해외파들이 한국적인 것을 전 세계의 문화와 삶에 접목하여 생긴 현상임을 기억할 필요가 있습니다. 특별히 기독교인들은 이미 말씀 안에서 문화와 인종, 그리고 국경을 초월하는 것을 배웠습니다. 일반적으로 종교는 특정 지역이나 특정 민족에 국한되는 경우가 많지만, 기독교는 세계 역사상 한 번도 어느 민족의 것이라고 규정된 적이 없습니다. 복음이 한국에 처음 들어갈 때는 벽안(파란 눈)의 종교라고 했지만, 지금 가장 많은 기독교인이 있는 나라는 중국입니다. 숫자적으로만 본다면 이제 기독교는 서양의 종교가 아니라, 동양의 종교가 된 것입니다. 타종교는 종교의식 속에 순례를 해야 할 메카가 있지만, 기독교는 예수님이 태어나 사역하신 이스라엘도 성지화하지 않습니다. 이것이 바로 태생부터 복음은 탈지역, 탈문화였다는 것을 반증하는 현상입니다.

지난주, 영어를 사용하는 셀을 방문했습니다. 2시간 동안 함께 앉아서 내내 영어로 소통하면서 주일예배 때 함께 들었던 메시지로 은혜를 나누는데, 한국말로 셀모임 하는 어느 셀보다 은혜가 많았습니다. 일본어를 하는 일본셀도 마찬가지입니다. 베델교회에서 이미 우리는, 넘나드는 문화를 자연스럽게 경험하고 있습니다. 앞으로 우리는 주일예배가 여러 언어로 통역되면서 다문화를 아우르는 교회가 되는 일에 더욱 힘쓸 것입니다. 영화에 ‘기생충’과 ‘중개인’이 있고, 클래식에 ‘임윤찬’이 있듯이, 세계 교회 안에 내일의 베델 리더십이 있기를 기대합니다.

Transcending of Gospel

I was asked to recommend a possible candidate in the U.S. for a senior pastorship in Korea by a senior pastor who is looking to take an early retirement. The pastor who is retiring had ministry in the U.S. He was scouted by his current church in Korea. Now that he is retiring, he is looking for someone who has ministry experience in the U.S. There are plenty of good pastors in Korea. But, if at all possible, he wants to find someone with ministry experience in the U.S. It is because this person will speak the universal language of English, and already familiar with globalization, going beyond Korean culture. The mission of Church is to take gospel to the ends of the earth and evangelize, transcending languages and cultures. He needed a pastor who is trained to go beyond his regional limitations. Of course, just being in the U.S. does not mean that all have become transcultural. However, it is understandable that they would prefer a pastor who has been to overseas and has broader view of things.

I remember what an elderly pastor from long ago said, “It’s better to learn from a foreign country, even if you slept through it, than to succeed in your hometown.” The lesson is that you learn more when you head into a new environment, adjusting to situations through your limitations, rather than living in your familiar environment while enjoying the privileges given to you. This is the reason for studying abroad, and going to world competitions. Nowadays, there is a lot of talk about Korean Wave. However, Korean Wave did not become Korean Wave because it remained only in Korea. We need to remember that Korean Wave is due to foreigners who have grafted themselves into Korean-ness and made them popular worldwide. In particular, Christians have already been trained in the Word to transcend cultures and races. Religions in the world, in most cases, are limited to nationalities. But Christianity, in the history of world, has never been designated to a particular nationality. When gospel came to Korea, they said it was a religion of the blue eyes. However, China has the greatest number of Christians in the world. It is not a Western religion. It has become an Eastern religion. Other religions require pilgrimage to mekka as part of their religious ceremony. Christianity does not even sanctify Israel where Jesus was born and worked. This proves that the gospel, since inception, is not regional nor cultural.

Last Sunday I visited our English-speaking cell group. We conversed in English for about 2 hours sharing the Sunday message. It seemed more grace-filled than any Korean-speaking cell groups. This is the same for Japanese-speaking cell group. We already have seamless transcultural experiences at Bethel Church. Going forward, we will put more effort into becoming diverse as we translate our worship into different languages. Then, as there are Parasites and Broker in the Korean movies, as there is Yunchan Lim in classical music, I anticipate tomorrow’s Bethel leadership in the world church.
