새해를 향한 우리의 간절함은 엘리야 특별새벽기도회에서 발산되어 폭발되었다고 해도 과장이 아닙니다. 9일간의 행진을 마무리하면서 받은 은혜를 나누는 성도님들을 보는 것이 얼마나 큰 기쁨이 되는지 모릅니다. 성도들의 행복이 목회자의 행복입니다. 성도들이 은혜받는 모습을 보면 제 자신이 은혜받는 것보다 더 좋습니다. 어린 자녀들과 나오면서 출근, 등교까지 챙기면서 기도로 영적 자산을 풍성히 채우고, 마지막 개근상까지 받고 기뻐하는 가족들을 보는 것은 제가 하나님께 받는 상급과 같습니다. 우리 자녀들은 후드 셔츠를, 어른들은 냉동 햇반용기 한 세트를 선물로 받았습니다. 성도님들이 기도한다는데, 기도를 격려하려고 애썼던 목회자의 입장에서 격려의 선물을 드리는 것은 하나도 아깝지 않습니다. 그러나 비록 선물은 공짜라 할 수 있지만, 선물이 가지는 그 가치는 가격을 매길 수 없습니다. 엘리야 특별새벽기도회 선물은 개근상입니다. 즉 개근한 분들에게 선물을 드리겠다는 약속이 있었습니다. 선물이 없다고 특별새벽기도회에 나오지 않는 분들은 없었겠지만 그렇다고 누가 가지든 상관없이 던지는 무분별한 선물은 아닙니다. 개근 결근 상관 없이 방출한다면 선물의 가치가 떨어집니다. 약속 있는 선물은 선물 자체의 금전적 가치도 있지만, 약속을 지킨 자가 가질 때 그 가치는 훨씬 더 상승합니다. 그래서 그 가치를 무시하지 않고, 질서를 지켜서 개근하신 분들에게만 선별하여 드리는 것이 옳다고 생각합니다. 여러 사정으로 한두 번 빠진 분들에게는 아쉽지만, 인색해서 안 드리는 것이 아니라, 선물의 가치를 지키기 위해 약속한 대로 개근상으로 드리는 것이 옳다고 믿기 때문입니다. 개근하여 선물을 받으신 분들과 함께 기뻐해 주시면, 햇반 용기보다 더 가치 있는 보석 같은 마음을 이미 받으신 분이라 믿습니다.

예수 믿는 사람의 특징은 베푸는 것입니다. 사람이 후해집니다. 인심이 곳간에서 난다는 말이 있듯이 받은 은혜의 곳간이 풍성하면 ‘저절로’ 나눠주는 후한 마음이 생깁니다. 더 가지려는 욕심은 자신의 부도난 영혼을 보여주는 것입니다. 사랑받은 사람이 사랑하고, 용서받은 사람이 용서를 베풀고, 은혜를 경험한 자가 은혜는 나눕니다. 만고불변의 법칙입니다. 혹시 내 얼굴이 굳어 있고, 따뜻한 말에 인색하고, 인사를 피해 다니십니까? “은혜받았습니다” 인사한 기억이 나지 않습니까? 은혜가 없어서, 어쩔 수 없이 나타나는 영적 빈貧티입니다. 선물 받은 자를 축복합니다. 질투나 욕심 없이 축하해 주는 보석 같은 마음을 더 축복합니다. 이것이 복음이 만들어내는 건강한 문화입니다.

Gift Culture Shaped by Gospel

It’s probably not an exaggeration to say that our desire for the New Year was formed and then exploded by Elijah Early Morning Prayer Worship. As we close out this 9-day march, it’s a great joy to see our congregation sharing the blessings of grace received. Happiness of the congregation is the happiness of the pastor. I love watching congregation receive blessings of grace more than me receiving it. Watching congregation come out to fill their spiritual assets through prayers with their young children, prepared to go to work and school right after, and families receiving perfect attendance prizes with joy is like I am receiving a prize from God. Our children received hoodies, and adults received food containers as gifts. From the perspective of a pastor who has tried to encourage prayers, it is not a waste to give gifts of encouragement. Gift is free, but the value of what this gift means is priceless. Elijah Early Morning Worship prize is for perfect attendance. There was a promise of a prize to those with perfect attendance. Even if there weren’t any prizes, everyone would still have come out. However, this prize is not given to everyone. If it was given to everyone regardless of attendance, the prize would not have much value. Gift with a promise has some monetary value. When it is received by someone who kept that promise, the value of that prize is much greater. Not ignoring its value and keeping the promise, I think it is only right to give to those who kept the promise and had perfect attendance. It would be a shame for those who missed one or two days. We’re not being stingy. This is because I believe it is right to give as a perfect attendance award as promised in order to preserve the value of the gift. When you rejoice with those who received the award, you have already received a heart of jewel which is more valuable than the container gift.

Unique characteristic of a believer in Jesus is giving. We become generous. There is a saying that generous hearts of people come from their barns. When our barns are filled with blessings of grace, ‘automatically’ we become generous. Greediness of wanting more reveals one’s spiritual bankruptcy. We love when we receive love. We forgive when we receive forgiveness, and we share grace when we experience grace. This is a forever law. Is your face hardened, stingy using warm words, or avoid greeting people? Can you remember the last time you said, “I was blessed”? Because there is no grace, spiritual emptiness is revealed. I bless those that received gifts. I bless your heart like jewel that blesses others without jealousy or greed. This is the healthy culture shaped by the gospel.
