저희 교회가 47년 전 오늘 태어났습니다. 결코 짧은 세월이 아니라 생각됩니다. 미국 땅에 최초로 시작된 한인 이민자들의 교회가 올해로 120년이 되는 해입니다. 그것을 생각해 보면, 한국분들의 미국 이민은 교회와 함께 시작했다고 해도 과언은 아닌 것 같습니다. 47년 전 얼바인은 오렌지밭이었다고 합니다. 거리를 다니면 오렌지 향긋한 냄새를 맡고 다닐 정도로 온통 오렌지밭이었는데, 지금은 집들로 빼곡히 들어선 도시가 되었습니다. 그래도 오렌지밭만 있었던 그때에 이민자들이 모여서 베델교회를 시작한 것은 전적인 하나님 은혜였고, 지난 47년의 세월은 하나님과 함께한 세월이었음을 믿습니다. 생일은 그래서 나이만 먹는 날이 아니라, 뒤돌아보며 감사하는 세월의 숫자라고 믿습니다. 47세가 된 교회가 얼마나 많은 사연이 있었을까 생각해 봅니다. 처음 교회가 시작된 순간부터 지금까지 계신 성도님들도 계십니다. 교회의 역사입니다. 좋은 일만 있는 것도 아니고, 어려운 일도 있었을 것입니다. 우여곡절 속에도 자리를 지켜 주신 분들이 계셔서 오늘이 있었다고 믿습니다.

그러나, 생일은 47년 전만 생일이 아니라, 오늘도 새롭게 생일을 시작하는 분들이 있습니다. 바로 오늘 예수님과 함께 베델교회에서 신앙 생활하시는 분들입니다. 평생에 잊지 못할 날이 내가 태어난 날이듯, 오늘 베델교회에서 맞는 생일은 교회의 생일일 뿐 아니라, 내가 예수님과 함께 시작하는 생일이 될 것을 믿습니다. 우리가 태어날 때, 비록 울면서 시작된 날이지만, 많은 자들에게 기쁨의 소식을 알리는 날이었습니다. 오늘도 예배하며 울컥하시는 분들, 눈을 감으며 진지하게 기도할 때 글썽이는 눈물을 흘리는 분들도 있을 것입니다. 결코 이상한 것이 아닙니다. 울며 태어났던 그날처럼 오늘은 하나님 아버지에게 엄청 기쁜 날일 것을 믿습니다. 한 분 한 분이 정말 우리 베델교회 VIP들입니다. 또다시 돌아올 베델의 생일을 감사와 기쁨의 추억으로 채워갈 주인공들입니다.

진심으로 환영합니다. 그리고 교회 생일과 함께 여러분의 생일도 축하드립니다. 이미 베델 교인이신 분들도 같은 마음일 것입니다. 낯설어서 그냥 지나치는 분이 계셔도 맘은 그렇지 않을 것입니다. 우리 서로 다가가기로 해요. 서로의 이름을 몰라도 인사부터 하기로 해요. 처음 만난 분이라도 고향 친구인 것처럼 곧 친해질 것입니다. 우리에게 또 다른 백 년이 지나고 교회 생일이 147년이 되는 때가 와서 우리가 여기없게 되어도, 오늘 같은 행복의 날은 계속되리라 확신합니다. 주안에서 환영합니다!

Today is a Birthday

Our church was born 47 years ago today. It’s definitely not a short period of time. This year is also the 120th anniversary of the very first Korean immigrant church in America. In thinking about this, it’s not an exaggeration to say that the beginning of Korean immigration to America started together with church. 47 years ago, Irvine was full of orange groves. Abundance of orange groves filled the streets with fragrance of orange flowers. Gone are the orange groves, now it has become a city filled with houses. When there were orange groves, there were Korean immigrants who gathered to start Bethel Church. This is all by God’s grace. He has been with the church for the past 47 years. Birthday is not just a day to gain age. It is the number of years that we can look back and be thankful for. I reflect just how many stories there are of a 47-year-old church. We have members who have been with the church since the moment of conception. They are the church’s history. There weren’t always only good things. I’m sure there were difficult times as well. I believe we are here today because of those members who kept their places, even in the midst of twists and turns.

However, this is not just a 47th birthday. We have people who have started a new birthday today. They are those who will begin a life of faith with Jesus at Bethel Church today. Just like we never forget our birthdays, this birthday is not just the church’s birthday, but it is a birthday that you begin with Jesus. When we were born, the day began with a cry, but it was a day that many shared the good news. There will be those who feel a surge of tears during worship. There will be those who will well up with tears when closing eyes to pray. This is not strange. Like the day you came to the world crying, today brings incredible joy to God our Father. Each one of you is our Bethel Church’s VIP. Bethel’s birthday will come around again next year, and you are the main character who will fill that birthday with memories of thanks and joy.

We truly welcome you. Along with the church’s birthday, we celebrate your birthday. All of our Bethel members share this same heart. Being strangers, some may just pass you by, but their hearts will not. We may not know each other’s names but let’s start by greeting one another. Even if you meet for the first time. Let’s reach out to each other. You never know who will become your close like friend from home. A joyful day like today will continue, even when another hundred years pass by and the church celebrates 147 years and we are no longer here. We welcome you in the Lord!
