수년 전 La Canada에서 우리 교회에 등록한 성도님이 계셨습니다. 이 소식을 듣는 많은 성도가 “왜 그렇게 먼 데서 여기까지 오냐?”고 물어서, 자신이 무슨 잘못을 한 것 같은 인상을 받아 혼란스러웠다며 저에게 개인적으로 상담을 요청하셨습니다. 그때 제가 이런 답을 드렸습니다. “좋은 대학은 멀어도 갑니다. 좋은 교회 역시 멀어도 갑니다.” 이분은 제 말에 격려를 받아 등록을 하고, 결국은 교회가 좋아서 교회 근처로 이사까지 왔습니다.

코로나 팬데믹 이후, 우리의 일상생활이 바뀌고 있습니다. 그중 하나가 재택근무하는 분들이 많아지면서 운전해서 직장에 가는 분들이 많이 줄어들고 있는 것입니다. 만약 회사가 사무실로 나올 것을 요구한다면 월급을 더 주어야 하는 부담 때문에 점점 회사로 출근하지 않고, 원격으로 근무하는 사례가 많아진 것입니다. 집에서도 충분히 일을 할 수 있는데, 회사로 나가려면 제일 먼저 개스비가 지출됩니다. 요즘같이 개스비가 천정부지로 솟는 때는 가능하면 집에 있는 것이 절약하는 방법이겠지요.

최근 실시된 조사에 의하면, 회사로 출근하는데 쓰는 시간이 많이 줄었다는 것입니다. 즉 재택 근무자들이 늘었고, 회사로 직접 나가기 위해서 운전을 멀리까지 하지 않는 경향이 두드러진 것입니다. 집에서 회사까지의 운전 시간은 평균 25분이며, 이보다 더 걸리면 회사를 옮기려는 움직임이 뚜렷하다는 것입니다. 이런 현상은 요즘 교회 출석과도 다르지 않습니다. 많은 교회들의 출석 교인수가 팬데믹 이전의 60-70%에 못 미치고 있습니다. 물론 이사를 가서 떠난 성도들도 있겠지만 온라인 예배가 발전하면서 굳이 복잡하게 예배 현장에 가는 것보다 팬데믹으로 익숙해진 영상으로 예배드리는 경향이, 지금의 낮아진 현장 예배 출석률을 대변해 주는 것 같습니다. 같은 조사 기관의 조사에 따르면 팬데믹 이전에는 교회 가는 평균 운전 시간이 6-15분이었는데, 지금은 5명 중 1명은 교회까지의 운전 시간이 5분 미만이며, 교회까지 30분 이상 운전할 의향이 있다는 성도는 10%도 채 되지 않았다고 합니다.

바뀌고 있는 예배의 문화를 고려하지 않을 수는 없습니다. 하지만, 재택근무로 회사의 일을 할 수 있는 것과 집에서 온라인으로 주일예배를 드리는 것과는 비교 대상이 되지 않는다고 생각합니다. 예배의 현장감은 아무리 최첨단 영상기술로도 대처가 불가하기 때문입니다. 가끔 TV 전도자들이 안수 기도 한다면서, TV 화면에 손을 얹고 기도하는 모습을 보면서 실소를 금치 못합니다. 커피 한 잔을 마실 때 우리는 분위기를 마십니다. 좋은 음악을 좋은 스피커로 집에서 들을 수 있음에도 음악회의 분위기를 즐기며 현장에 가듯이, 또한 인스타그램으로 명화를 볼 수 있어도, 미술 전시회에 가서 그 분위기를 감상 하듯이, 예배에는 현장에서만 느끼고, 현장에서만 받는 은혜가 있습니다. 천국도 온라인으로 가는 것이 아니라면, 우리는 현장 예배를 사수해야 합니다.

Will Travel Far for a Good Church

Many years ago, we had someone register as a new church member from La Canada. Many church members asked, “Why do you come from so far away?” This question made him feel like he was doing something wrong. He came to me in confusion, and asked for personal advice whether he was doing the right thing. I gave him my answer. “We go far away for a good college. Even a church, we will travel far for a good church.” This person was very encouraged. He registered as a member. Eventually, he moved closer to church.

Our daily lives are changing since the Coronavirus pandemic. With increasing number of people working at home, people driving to work have decreased. With added burden of potentially having to pay more for people to come into the office, many companies allowed people to work at home without expectation of having them come to the office. Working at home is usually adequate. Having to go to office means spending money on gas. Times like now when gas prices are soaring, staying home as much as possible is a way to save money.

According to a recent survey, commuting time to work has considerably decreased. More people are working out of their homes. They prefer a shorter commute. If average commute took about 25 minutes, there is a clear trend of changing jobs when the commutes are longer. This phenomenon is no different for churches. Attendance for many churches is about 60-70% of what they used to be before the pandemic. Of course, some people have moved. However, argument on the attendance is that, with development of online worship, many people prefer to worship online, which they have become comfortable with during the pandemic. Similar from the survey, average driving time to go to church was about 6-15 minutes before the pandemic, but now 1 out of 5 people drive less than 5 minutes to church. Less than 10% of people are willing to drive 30 minutes or more to go to church.

We have to rethink changing culture of our worship. I don’t think being able to work at home can be compared to worshiping online at home. The feeling of worshiping in person cannot be duplicated online, no matter how technically advanced we are. Occasionally, I see TV evangelists praying over people online, but you cannot experience the prayer in person. A cup of coffee tastes better in a nice ambiance. Even if we could listen to good music at home with nice speakers, we still go to concert to enjoy the ambiance. We see a masterpiece on Instagram, but we still go to exhibitions to enjoy the ambiance of the art exhibit. There is the feeling of grace that we can only share in the place of worship. If we couldn’t go to heaven via online, then we must commit to be at the place of worship.
