하나님의 말씀이 진리이면 하나님이 두렵습니다. 공의로운 하나님, 우리를 심판하실 하나님을 믿으면 하나님이 두렵습니다. 그래서 성경은 하나님을 경외(두려워)하는 것이 지혜의 근본이라고 말합니다(잠 9:10). 심판과 지옥을 믿으니, 오늘 하루를 절제하며 긴장하며 삽니다. 지극히 당연한 것입니다. 하나님을 믿기 때문에 그 분의 자녀됨의 자유함도 있지만, 그 분의 말씀대로 행하실 심판을 생각하며 두려움도 생깁니다. 얼마전 큐티인에서 묵상했던 데살로니가전서 말씀처럼 주님의 오심은 밤에 도둑 같이 임할 것이라 했습니다(살전 5:2, 참고/벧전 3:10). 이 말씀을 믿으면 신앙이 나태해지는 나의 모습에 겁이 덜컥 납니다. 가장 안 올 것 같은 시간에 오는 손님이 도둑입니다. 가장 방심하고 있는 시간에 도둑이 오듯이, 우리가 영적으로 방심하는 시간에 주님이 도둑 같이 오실 수 있다는 사실에 겁이 나서 나태함을 회개하고 다시 기도하며 긴장의 끈을 바짝 당기게 됩니다.

매일 영적인 건강을 지키기 위해서 기도하고, 말씀의 훈련을 받는 것이 당연한데, 자신의 영적 상태에 빨간 경고의 불이 들어왔는데도 겁을 먹지 않는 이유는 심판의 날이 도둑같이 임할 것을 믿지 않고 있기 때문입니다. 지옥을 믿지 않으면 죄를 지어도 죄책감이 없습니다. 부족한 인간인지라 어쩔 수 없이 짓는 죄가 있습니다. 그러나, 지옥과 심판을 믿으면 빨리 회개하고 돌이킵니다. 거짓말하는 죄, 돈에 깨끗하지 못한 죄, 말로 남의 마음을 아프게 하는 죄, 이런 못된 죄들을 지었을 때에 가슴 아프게 생각하고 통회하며 회개하고 돌이킵니다.

가끔 교회 주차장에 오토바이를 탄 경찰이 숨어서 교회 앞을 달리는 자동차의 속도를 재면서 과속한 차량에 벌금을 부과하는 것을 봅니다. 간혹 교회 주차장에 들어서는 목회자들도 과속하여 교회 주차장에서 벌금을 낸적이 있어서 카톡창에 조심하라고 메시지를 띄웁니다. 숨어 있는 경찰이 있을 수 있다는 가능성 앞에서도 우리는 조심스럽게 속도를 줄이며 교회로 진입합니다. 하물며 하나님의 말씀은 맞을 가능성이 있는 정도가 아니라, 천지가 없어져도 일점일획도 변함없이 이루어질 말씀입니다. 그 말씀을 믿지 않으니 과속해도 겁을 먹지 않고 제 맘대로 사는 것입니다.

공부 못하는 학생은 시험을 보는 날이 두렵지 않습니다. 마지막 평가를 전혀 개의치 않습니다. 그러나, 공부 잘하는 학생은 시험 보는 날이 두려워 열심히 공부합니다. 평가받는 것이 중요하기 때문에 최선을 다해 시험을 준비합니다. 공부를 등한시 해서 시험이 있으나 없으나 두렴 없이 사는 자가 되지 맙시다. 말씀대로 믿고, 서로를 격려하며 믿음을 지키기 위해서 밀어주고 끌어주고, 말씀과 기도의 긴장 끈을 당깁시다.

If you truly believed in God’s Word

If God’s Word is the truth, we ought to be fearful of God. If you believe in just and righteous God who will judge us, we ought to be fearful of God. That is why the Bible says fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Pr 9:10). We live today with restraint and tension because we believe in judgement and hell. This is very obvious. We are liberated as God’s children because we believe in Him. We also become fearful knowing that we will be judged according to His Word. Like the 1 Thessalonians passage that we meditated on during QT-In not too long ago, God will come like a thief in the night(1 The 5:2, Ref:1 Pet 3:10). If you believe in the Word, seeing ourselves becoming lazy in our faith will make us fearful. Thief comes at a time when he is least expected. Like thief comes at a time when he is not thought about, the Lord could come, like a thief, when we are spiritually absent. With fearful mind, we must hold tight to our tension through repenting our laziness and praying.

It’s obvious that we must pray and train in the Word to keep our good spiritual health. But the reason we are not fearful, even when a red warning light of our spiritual state flashes, is because we don’t believe that the judgment day will come like a thief. If you don’t believe in hell, you don’t feel guilty even when you sin. Because we are imperfect, we inevitably commit sin. However, if you believe in hell and judgment, we would quickly repent and return. Sin of lying, sin of unclean money, sin of inflicting pain on others with words… when we commit these sins, our hearts ache, cry out, repent and return.

Occasionally I see a motorcycle policeman hiding in our church parking lot to check the speed of passing cars. Traffic ticket with hefty fine is given out to those driving over the speed limit. In the past, some of our pastoral staff were caught speeding and received tickets as they entered the parking lot. Kakao talk message is quickly sent to others to be careful. Knowing the possibility of a hidden policeman, we reduce our speed and carefully enter the church. However, God’s Word is not just about possibility. Even if the whole universe disappeared, God’s Word never changes. It comes true. If you don’t believe in His Word, you will live as your heart desires. You will not fear whether you speed or not.

Students who don’t do well in school do not fear testing. They are not interested in their test assessment. However, good students study hard in fear of testing. They give their best to prepare for testing because assessment is important to them. Let’s not neglect studying and live without fear whether there’s testing or not. Let’s believe in the Word, encourage one another, pushing and pulling to keep the faith. Let’s tighten our string of tension with the Word and prayers.
