회귀 본능을 얘기할 때, 연어가 늘 등장합니다. 강에서 태어나 바다로 나가 성장하다가 알을 낳을 때가 되면 다시 자기의 고향인 강으로 물살을 거슬러 되돌아옵니다. 그 이유는 잘 모르지만, 신기한 일입니다. 인공 증식으로 태어난 네 살짜리 푸른 바다거북 한 마리가 지난해 제주 중문해변에서 방류되었는데, 90일 만에 3847km를 헤엄쳐 베트남 동쪽 해역에 정착했다는 기사를 읽었습니다. 인공 증식으로 태어난 거북이의 어미는 베트남 인근 해변에서 포획되었는데, 결국 어미의 고향 베트남까지 1만 리가량 헤엄쳐 돌아간 것입니다. 생각할수록 신기한 일입니다. 아마 연어나 거북이의 DNA에 회귀본능이 심겨 있는지 각자 자기의 고향으로 돌아가는 것입니다.

사람도 죽을 때가 되면 어릴 적 흙에서 놀던 기억에 흙과 가까워진다고 합니다. 뒷마당에 농사짓기를 좋아하고, 운동하며 걸을 때도 가능하면 아스팔트 콘크리트 길이 아니라, 흙을 밟으며 걷기를 선호합니다. 자라면서 한 번도 즐기지 않았던 트로트가 신이 나고 재미있게 느껴지는 것도 어릴 때 들으면서 자라온 옛날로 회귀하는 본능의 작동이라고 말하는 사람이 있습니다.

미국에 이민 올 때만 해도 스파게티도 좋아하고, 빵도 좋아해서 원래 미국에 살 팔자였다고 주위에서 농담했는데, 지금은 김치를 먹지 않으면 음식 삼키기가 힘들어지고, 아침엔 물에 말은 구수한 누룽지를 찾고, 김치찌개를 자주 찾는 것을 보니, 저도 흙에 점점 가까워지나 봅니다.

앉았다 일어날 때든지, 아침에 잠에서 일어날 때든지, 개운하게 기지개를 켜기보다는 몸이 뻐근할 때가 많은데, 뻐근이 뻑적지근의 준말이라 합니다. 몸이 뻐근할 때마다 지근(地近), 땅에 가까워진다는 말이니 회귀 본능이 점점 뚜렷해지나 봅니다.

그러나, 우리 신앙인들의 진정한 회귀 본능은 땅으로 가까워지기보다는 하늘에 가까워지는 것이 맞습니다. 우리의 본향은 천국이기 때문입니다. 고인이 돌아가셨다는 표현은 지극히 성경적입니다. 본향, 천국으로 돌아가셨다는 뜻입니다. 신앙의 연륜이 쌓일수록, 우리의 목표는 이 땅이 아니라, 저 천국입니다. 땅을 보며 사는 자들이 아니라, 가슴을 펴고 하늘을 바라보며 삽니다. 푸른 바다거북이가 한 번도 살아보지 않은 자기 어미의 고향을 찾아가듯이, 우리 신앙인도 한 번도 살아보지 않은 천국으로 회귀하는 본능은 이 땅에 발붙여 살면서도 천국을 부인할 수 없는 영원 DNA가 우리 안에 있기 때문입니다. 오늘 너무 보고 싶은 고 손인식 목사님의 1주기를 맞이하며 더욱 우리 안에 위를 향한 회귀 본능이 용솟음칩니다.

그러므로 너희가 그리스도와 함께 다시 살리심을 받았으면 위의 것을 찾으라 거기는 그리스도께서 하나님 우편에 앉아 계시느니라 위의 것을 생각하고 땅의 것을 생각하지 말라(골 3:1-2)

Instinct to Return

Whenever we talk about instinct to return home, we think of salmons. After they are hatched in rivers, they go out to sea to grow and mature. When it comes time for them to lay eggs, they return to the same river, swimming upstream to where they were hatched. We don’t really know the reason for this, but it is amazing. A four year old green sea turtle that was born from artificial insemination was set free last year from Jeju Island. A news article said that, after 90 days, it eventually settled near east of Vietnam after swimming for 3847km. Mother of this turtle was captured near Vietnam. The young turtle swam almost 4000km to return home, its mother’s home. The more you think about it, the more amazing it is. Perhaps, salmons and turtles have DNA in them to instinctively returning home.

They say when a person is close to death, the person enjoys being close to dirt longing for childhood memory of playing in dirt. I enjoy planting in a vegetable garden in my backyard. When I exercise walking, given a choice, I prefer to walk on dirt. The reason we get excited and enjoy Korean Trot Program, even though we may have never enjoyed it as a child, people say it is our instinct to return to the old days, to something that we have heard in our childhood.

People around me used to joke, since I enjoyed eating spaghetti and bread, that I was meant to live in America. Now, I have to have kimchi to eat food. I look for hot water with roasted rice in the morning, and I often ask for kimchi stew. Perhaps, I am also coming closer to dirt.

More often than not, I feel stiff when I stand up from a sitting position or waking up in the morning. Instead of feeling good after a good stretch, I feel achy. Every time I feel stiff, they say I am getting closer to dirt ground. The instinct to return home is becoming more clear.

However, on our instinct to return as believers, it’s correct to say that we are getting closer to heaven instead of dirt ground. That’s because our home is heaven. To say that the deceased has returned (Korean word for ‘passed’ is ‘returned’) is truly biblical. It means he/she has returned home to heaven. The more years we have been believers, we realize more that our goal is not earth but it is heaven. Let’s open our hearts and look towards heaven, not becoming people who live looking to earth. Just like the green sea turtle that went to find its mother’s home where it has never lived, believer’s instinct to return to heaven, where we have never lived, is because we have in us an eternal DNA that cannot deny heaven even though we live on this earth.
