얼마전 모교에 잘 아는 장로님이 당신 아버님이 천국 가셨다고 소식을 알려왔습니다. 알려온 소식에 사진 한 장도 같이 첨부되어 있었는데, 저의 아버님과 생전에 같이 찍었던 사진이었습니다. 평소에 가깝게 지내셨던 분이라, 더욱 안타까웠습니다. 소식과 함께 날아온 사진 한 장으로 천국 가신 아버님이 갑자기 많이 보고 싶어졌습니다. 한국에서 이른 나이에 장로가 되시고, 이민 오시기 전까지 학교 음악선생님으로 대학 시절부터 교직에 몸 담고 계셨습니다. 세 자녀들 미국에서 교육시키겠다는 이유로 이민을 결단하시고, 필라델피아로 오셨습니다. 살던 집 팔아 밀렸던 건축헌금을 다 드리고 막상 미국은 맨 땅에 헤딩하듯 친척 한 명도 없는 필라에 도착한 다음 날부터 봉제공장에서 일하기 시작하셨습니다. 그 이후 필라델피아의 할렘가인 로간 지역에서 아이스크림 가게를 인수하셨습니다. 대학교 때 기숙사에서 살던 저는 집에 나올 때마다 가게를 도왔는데, 가게문을 닫던 밤 시간에는 경찰의 경호를 받을 만큼 위험한 지역이었습니다. 저희 형제들은 모두 아이스크림 가게 운영하실 때 대학공부를 다 마쳤습니다. 부모님은 나중에 세탁소도 하셨는데, 결국 무리가 되어 몸에 병을 얻고 은퇴하시게 되었습니다.

이민 1세대로 이런 어려움을 겪지 않은 분들이 어디 있겠습니까? 그 고생과 어려움 속에서 믿음을 지키고, 지금의 교회를 지켜온 믿음의 1세대들이 있었기에 오늘이 있다고 믿습니다. 그런 믿음의 1세대가 한 분 두 분씩 천국 가는 모습을 보면서, 1.5세들의 헌신과 덕스러운 섬김이 아쉬울 때입니다. 앞으로 디아스포라 교회의 운명은 잃어 버린 이민 2세대를 다시 찾아오는 것에 달렸다 해도 과장은 아닐 것입니다. 한국어와 영어로 소통이 자유로운 1.5세대들이 2세대와 2.5세대를 안고 가야합니다. ‘이민교회’의 구태의연한 이미지에서 탈퇴하여 다음 세대와 같이 호흡하며 뛸 수 있는 마음이 열려 있는 1.5세대들이 1세대들의 기본기, 희생정신과 바닥의 섬김으로 ‘내일 교회’의 주인공들이 되어야 합니다.

저는 10년, 20년 후 우리 교회를 생각해 봅니다. 온 세대 큐티로 믿음의 대를 이어가며, 내일을 향해 같이 뛰는 코드가 맞는 교회로 더욱 도약할 것입니다. 베델 클래시컬 아카데미 학생들과 교회학교에서 훈련 받은 자녀들이 EM과 2.5세대의 탁월한 인물이 되어 사명을 이어가는 교회로 웅비할 것을 믿습니다. 유일무이하게 이민자들이 늘고 있는 캘리포니아에서, 그것도 가장 살기 좋다는 어바인에서 글로벌 시대에 걸맞게 1세대들이 정착하기 편한 교회가 되어, 맘껏 은사를 발휘하며 섬기는 교회가 되기를 기도합니다. 하나님을 제일로 섬기며, 성도들의 가장 절실히 영적 필요를 풍성히 공급하며 디아스포라 교회의 영적 자산의 산실이 되고, 세계 선교를 위해 프론트 라인에 서서 질주하는 교회가 될 것을 믿습니다. 우리 모두 다짐합시다. 베델의 영적 유산을 주님 오실 때가지!

Generation that Comes and Goes

A while ago, an elder that I know well from school sent me a news that his father went to heaven. He sent the news with a picture. It was a picture of his father with my father when they were alive. It made me sad as they were very close. Seeing the picture that came with the news suddenly made me long to see my father who also went to heaven. My father became an elder at an early age in Korea. Until we emigrated, he was a school music teacher. He was a teacher ever since he was in college. He decided to emigrate to educate his three children in the U.S., and came to Philadelphia. He sold our house we lived in to pay off the church building offering he pledged. Coming to U.S. was like starting from bare ground. As soon as we arrived in Philadelphia, where we knew no one, he began working the very next day at a garment factory. After that, he took over an ice cream store in Logan area, Philadelphia’s Harlem. While I was in college, I lived in a dormitory. Whenever I came home, I helped at the store. At night time closing, police would come and stand guard. It was a dangerous area. While my parents worked at the ice cream store, all my siblings finished college. My parents later had a laundromat, but their hard work brought on illnesses and had to retire.

Who from the first-generation immigrants hasn’t faced this kind of hardship? They kept their faith in midst of suffering and difficulty. I believe we have today because of the faithful first generation who protected the church. As I watch these first-generation faithfuls make their way to heaven one by one, it is time for the 1.5 generation’s dedication and virtuous services. It’s not an exaggeration to say that the future of diaspora churches depends on the return of lost 2nd generation immigrants. 1.5 generation, who can freely communicate in Korean and English, must move forward embracing 2nd and 2.5 generations. The 1.5 generation need to be open-minded enough to break away from the old image of the ‘immigrant church.’ They need to breath and run together with the next generation. They must become the main characters of ‘tomorrow’s church’ following after 1st generation’s principles, spirit of sacrifice and service.

I think about our church in 10, 20 years. We will continue our faith with allgeneration QTs. We will leap forward as a church that runs together in sync for tomorrow. I believe that students of Bethel Classical Academy and the children trained in Church School will become figures of EM and 2.5 generation who will carry on the mission for the church. In California where immigrants are increasing at an unprecedented rate, and in Irvine, the best place to live, I pray that we become a church that first-generation people settle in easily, fit for the global era, and that serve with grace with all of our hearts. I believe that we will become a church that serves God first. We provide abundantly the most urgent spiritual needs of believers. We become a source of spiritual wealth for the diaspora churches. We stand in the front line and run forward for world missions. Let’s all pledge. Bethel’s spiritual heritage until the Lord comes!
