제가 예삶 채플로 부임한지 2년이 되었습니다. 지난 시간을 돌아보며, 자연스럽게 청년 세대와 교회의 미래를 생각합니다. 한국교회의 미래를 이야기할 때면 자주 듣는 말이 있습니다. “이제 교회에 청년들이 없다”는 말입니다. 목회데이터연구소가 소개한 자료에 따르면 2023년 기준 우리나라 20대 가운데 기독교인은 9%, 30대는 11%에 불과하다고 합니다. 열 명 가운데 한 명 정도만이 기독교인이라는 것입니다. 물론 미주 한인교회의 청년 사역 마찬가지입니다. 대학청년기는 학업과 진로, 직장과 결혼 등 삶의 중요한 전환이 집중되는 시기입니다. 특히 그에 따라 지역을 옮기는 경우도 많아, 한 교회와 공동체에 오래 머물며 뿌리내리는 것이 쉽지 않기 때문입니다. 그럼에도 지난 2년 동안 베델교회 예삶 채플에서는 조금 다른 풍경이 이어지고 있습니다. 놀랍게도 단 한 주도 방문자가 없었던 주일이 없었습니다. 2025년 한 해 동안 예삶을 찾은 방문자와 새가족은 286명이었고, 그 중 170명이 셀에 배정되었습니다. 올해도 지난주까지 166명이 찾아왔으며, 현재까지 77명이 셀에 연결되었습니다. 지난 4월 부활주일 새생명축제에서는 현장 예배 출석 인원이 처음으로 300명을 넘어서는 감사한 일도 있었습니다.

그러나 우리는 교회의 열매를 숫자로만 설명할 수 없으며, 이 숫자를 예삶의 ‘성공’이나 누군가의 ‘성과’로 말할 수도 없습니다. 사람을 보내시는 분도, 한 영혼의 마음을 열어 복음을 듣게 하시는 분도, 그 믿음을 자라게 하시는 분도 하나님이시기 때문입니다. 우리에게 맡겨진 것은 부르신 자리에서 말씀과 복음을 충실히 전하고, 맡겨 주신 영혼들을 성실하게 섬기는 일입니다. 우리가 그 본질에 충실하려 애쓰는 동안 하나님께서 사람들을 보내셨고 공동체를 자라게 하셨습니다. 그러므로 이 숫자들은 자랑의 근거라기보다 “하나님께서 하셨습니다”라고 고백하게 하는 은혜의 흔적입니다. 그런 의미에서 이 많은 청년들을 바라볼 때 감사와 함께 사명의 무게를 느낍니다. “이만큼 많은 사람이 모였다”가 아니라 “하나님께서 이만큼 많은 영혼을 우리에게 맡기셨다”고 받아들이기 때문입니다. 한 사람이 이름 없는 방문자에서 믿음의 가족이 되고,
복음을 알고 말씀으로 자라며, 마침내 또 다른 사람을 섬기는 제자로 세워지는 것, 그것이 우리가 바라보아야 할 더 깊은 부흥일 것입니다.

청년들은 여전히 교회의 문을 두드립니다. 그리고 하나님께서는 그들을 우리에게 보내십니다. 우리의 자랑이나 트로피가 되라고 보내시는 것이 아니라, 우리의 사명이 되라고 보내시는 것임을 믿습니다. 하나님께서 맡겨 주신 한 영혼 한 영혼에게 복음을 전하고 말씀으로 양육하며, 그리스도 안에서 성숙한 제자로 세워 가는 일에 끝까지 충실한 베델교회와 예삶 채플이 되길 소망합니다.

Have young adults really left the church?

It has been two years since I began serving at Yesalm Chapel. Looking back, I find myself thinking about the younger generation and the future of the church. When people talk about the future of the Korean church, I often hear, “There are no young people left in the church.” According to the Ministry Data Institute, as of 2023, only 9% of Koreans in their 20s and 11% of those in their 30s identify as Christians—roughly one out of ten. Young adult ministry in Korean American churches faces similar challenges. These years are filled with major transitions—school, careers, jobs, and marriage. Young adults often relocate along the way, making it difficult to remain rooted in one church community. Yet over the past two years, we have witnessed a different story at Bethel Church’s Yesalm Chapel. Remarkably, there has not been a single Sunday without a visitor. In 2025, 286 visitors and newcomers came to Yesalm, and 170 were connected to small groups. This year, 166 have already visited as of last Sunday, with 77 connected to small groups. At New life festival on Easter Sunday this past April, in-person attendance surpassed 300 for the first time—something for which we are deeply grateful.

Yet the fruit of the church cannot be measured by numbers alone, nor can these numbers be called Yesalm’s “success” or anyone’s “achievement.” God is the One who sends people, opens hearts to hear the gospel, and causes faith to grow. Our calling is to faithfully preach His Word, proclaim the gospel, and care for the souls He entrusts to us. As we have sought to remain faithful to this calling, God has continued to send people and grow this community. These numbers, then, are not something to boast about, but traces of grace that lead us to confess, “God has done this.” So when I look at these young adults, I feel both gratitude and the weight of our calling. Rather than saying, “Look how many people have gathered,” we want to say, “Look how many souls God has entrusted to us.” Our hope is that each person will move from being an unknown visitor to becoming part of the family of faith—to know the gospel, grow in the Word, and eventually become a disciple who serves others. This is the deeper revival we long to see.

Young adults are still knocking on the doors of the church, and God is sending them to us. He is not sending them to become our pride or our trophies, but to become our mission. May Bethel Church remain faithful in proclaiming the gospel to every soul God entrusts to us, nurturing them in His Word, and raising them as mature disciples in Christ.
