기독교 학교를 미션스쿨이라 부릅니다. 복음을 전하기 위해서 해외로 나가는 행동을 미션트립이라 부릅니다. 우리말로 ‘선교’라 번역하여 쓰곤 합니다. 우리 베델교회에서는 1-2주 해외나 타지역에 가서 봉사 활동을 하며 복음을 전하는 사역을 매년 합니다. 이 사역에 동참하는 분들이 연 500명이 넘습니다. 총 들고 다니던 가방의 숫자가 천 개가 넘습니다. 마일리지만 해도 지구를 몇 바퀴를 돌고도 남을 정도입니다. 이 모든 것을 미션이라는 단어 하나로 요약합니다. 그 단어에 담겨 있는 의미는 너무나 크고 깊습니다. 왜냐하면 오늘 내가 있는 이유가 그 결과물 중의 하나이기 때문입니다. 오늘 우리 교회가 여기 있는 이유도 그 결과라 할 수 있기 때문입니다. 어쩌면 오늘 여러분이 이 자리에 앉아 같이 예배드릴 수 있는 이유도 미션과 무관하지 않습니다.

우리의 조국 대한민국에 미션이 들어간 지 140년이 되었습니다. 그때는 우리처럼 비행기 타고 다니던 시절이 아니었습니다. 비행기 마일리지가 아니라, 배로 다니던 해상 마일리지로 다녔던 시절입니다. 비행기 마일리지는 쌓이면 혜택이 있지만, 배로 다닐 때는 마일리지 올라간 만큼 고생을 자초한 증거였습니다. 그렇게 수개월씩 배를 타고, 큰 배가 내릴 만한 항구 하나 제대로 없던 우리나라까지 미션하는 분들이 찾아오신 것입니다. 그분들이 오셔서 미션스쿨, 미션병원, 미션고아원 등을 세워 사람답게 사는 것이 무엇인지 깨닫게 해주셨습니다. 고생의 상징인 마일리지를 아랑곳하지 않고, 찾아와 주셨던 분들은 시간이 많아 여행 중에 오신 분들이 아니었습니다. 강압적인 이유 하나 없이 스스로, 한 번도 본 적도 없고, 들어본 적도 없는 나라에 자기의 전문 직업과 보장된 미래를 포기하고 찾아온 분들 이었습니다. 처음에는 우리나라를 뺏으려고 찾아온 도둑인 줄 오해도 해서 핍박도 했고, 나라 문도 닫아걸었던 경우도 있었지만, 그들이 찾아온 이유는 단순했습니다. 미션 때문이었습니다. 그들도 배운대로 하는 것이었습니다. 누구한테 배웠을까요?

우리를 사랑해서 하늘을 버리고 우리 가운데 오신 예수님께 배운 것 입니다. 찾아오지 않으셨다면 죽을 수밖에 없던 우리를 위해 오셔서 미션을 하신 것입니다. 어쩌면 최초의 미션은 예수님의 미션이었습니다. 오늘 우리 모두는 여기에 찾아오신 분들입니다. 그러나 예수님이 우리에게 찾아오신 미션의 연장선에 있다고 생각합니다. 오늘 우리 마음에 예수님이 미션스쿨, 미션병원, 그리고 미션하우스를 지어 주실 것입니다. 예수님이 여러분의 마음에 노크하실 때에 환영하는 문을 활짝 열어 주십시오. 교회 문턱을 넘어 새로운 삶이 시작될 것입니다.

Threshold of Church

Christian schools are called mission schools. Going oversea to share the Gospel is called a mission trip. In Korean, we use a word ‘sun-gyo.’ Every year, Bethel Church teams go overseas and to other regions to share the Gospel and serve the community for 1-2 weeks at a time. We have over 500 members participating in these trips every year. There are over a thousand traveling bags used for the trips. Mileages alone are enough to go around the earth many times. All of these can be summarized in one word, mission. The meaning behind this word is enormous and deep. It is because who I am today is one of those results. The reason our church is present here today is also from one of those results. The reason that we are in this place today worshiping together cannot be excluded from mission.

Missionaries entered our mother country, Korea 140 years ago. People did not travel by airplanes like we do today. Not with airplane mileages, it was a time when they traveled by maritime mileages. We get benefits from accumulated airplane mileages now. But when traveling by ship, more mileages meant more trouble for the traveler. Missionaries traveled for months on ships and came to our country where there wasn’t even a large enough port for a large ship to dock. They came and built mission schools, hospitals, orphanages. They helped us to realize how to live as human beings. They didn’t care about their mileages, which symbolized hardship. They came not because they had a lot of time and stop over during their trip somewhere. They were not coerced. They came on their own to a country that they have never seen or heard of. They gave up their professional jobs and guaranteed future. Initially, they were persecuted from misunderstanding that they came to steal our country, even closing the country altogether. They came with a simple reason. It was because  of mission. They did as they were taught. Who did they learn from?

They learned from Jesus who came to our midst, abandoning heaven because of his love for us. If he did not come, we would surely die. He came to us to do mission. Perhaps, the very first mission was Jesus’ mission. All of us came today seeking this place. However, I think we are in the extension of the mission that Jesus came to us with. Today, Jesus will build mission school, hospital, and home in our hearts. When Jesus knocks at the door of our hearts, open and welcome Him. As we cross the threshold of the church, new life will begin.
