많이들 놀라셨을 것입니다. 우리나라 대한민국에서 계엄령이 선포되었다는 소식을 듣고 많이 놀라셨을 것입니다. 지난 화요일 새벽기도를 마치고 우리 목회자들은 운동 가기 위해 모였는데, 행정 목사님이 “목사님, 한국에 계엄령이 발령되었습니다.” 저의 반응은 “정말?” “왜?”였습니다. 그만큼 의외였고, 믿을 수 없는 뉴스였습니다. 지금 칼럼을 쓰고 있는 시간에도 왜라는 질문에 답을 찾을 수가 없습니다. 그날 밤 NBC 뉴스를 듣는데, 이렇게 앵커가 맨트를 시작합니다. “미국의 가장 충성스럽고 전략적인 동맹국 중의 하나인 남한 South Korea의 국회는 군인들에게 둘러싸여 위기에 처해 있습니다. 윤 대통령은 계엄령의 이유를 종북의 반국가 세력을 척결하기 위함이라고 밝혔습니다.” 저의 부족한 생각에는 만약 이것이 사실이라면, 북한과 결탁해서 나라를 전복시키려는 구체적인 움직임이나, 피해 사항들을 국민들 앞에 밝혔어야 했습니다. 설득할 만한 것도 없이 계엄령을 발표하였기에 국회에서 2시간만에 계엄령 해제를 여야 만장일치로 결정하고, 6시간 만에 계엄령이 해제된 것이었습니다. 아마, 지금쯤 정부와 나라는 더욱 혼란이 가중될 것으로 생각합니다. 참으로 안타까운 일이 아닐 수 없습니다. 국민이 뽑은 한 나라의 대통령과 그 참모들이 이 중차대한 일을 결정하고, 진행한 일이 2시간만에 번복될 일이었다는 것이 믿기지 않습니다. “오, 주여~” 저절로 입에서 기도가 나옵니다.

사랑하는 성도 여러분, 우리 모두 하나님 앞에 두고 온 우리 조국, 대한민국을 위해서 기도해야 합니다. 이 일로 나라가 혼란에 빠지지 않도록 기도해야 하며, 하나님의 축복으로 세계 경제 대국 10위와 5위의 군사 강국으로 성장한 것에 교만하지 않고, 복음을 위해서 쓰임 받는 나라가 되도록 기도해야 합니다. 지난 주일, 우리가 들었던 메시지는 하나님이 언제든 우리를 떠날 수 있다는 사실이었습니다. 결코 교만해서는 안 됩니다. 가슴을 치며, 회개해야 합니다. 나라가 망하면 우리도 망합니다. 나라가 없으면, 우리도 없습니다. 지금도 러시아와 전쟁 중인 우크라이나 군인들이 올해만 6만 명의 탈영병이 발생했다는 기사를 읽고 경악했습니다. 싸우는 것이 힘들어서, 탈영병으로 잡혀 감옥에서 사는 것이 더 편해서 그랬다고 합니다. 한국을 포함해 서방에서 도와주는 군수물자로 버티곤 있지만, 우크라이나도 넘어갈 날이 머지않았습니다. 어느 나라가 자국민도 달아나는 나라를 지켜 주겠다고 우리의 젊은 자녀들을 보내겠습니까? 미국 메이저 방송국 첫 뉴스로 ‘한국의 계엄령!’ 보도를 하는데, 한편 걱정도 되고, 또 한편 부끄럽기도 했습니다. 그래도 우리 기도합시다. 이제는 정말 나라를 위해 기도해야 할 때입니다. 꼼짝 말고 기도만 할 수 있도록 기도 계엄령을 선포합시다.

Prayer Martial Law

I’m sure everyone was shocked from the news. Many were shocked to hear the news that Martial Law was ordered in our country, South Korea. Our pastoral staff were gathered to exercise Tuesday after early morning prayer service when our executive pastor said, “Pastor, Martial Law was ordered in Korea.” My response was “Really?” “Why?” The news was quite unexpected and hard to believe. Even as I write this column, I haven’t found an answer to why. That night, as I was listening to NBC News, the anchor began with a comment. “One of America’s most loyal and strategic allies, South Korea is in crisis with its National Assembly surrounded by soldiers… President Yoon stated that the reason for martial law was to eradicate pro-North Korea forces”. In my meager knowledge, if this were to be true, specific movements to overthrow the country by colluding with North Korea and any damages should have been revealed to the public. Since the martial law was ordered without anything persuasive, the ruling and opposition parties unanimously decided within 2 hours at the National Assembly to lift the martial law. Martial law was lifted in 6 hours of the announcement. I think the government and country is probably in more confusion right now. This is truly a pity. It’s hard to believe that the president elected by the people and his staff decided on this important matter and that the action was overturned in just two hours. “Oh, Lord~” Prayer just comes out of my mouth automatically.

Dear beloved congregation, we must all pray for our country, South Korea. We must pray that our country does not fall into chaos, will not be too prideful of becoming world’s 10th largest economy and 5th largest military power. Instead, we must pray that our country will be used for the gospel. What we heard in the message last Sunday is the truth that God can leave us at any time. We must beat our chests and repent. If our country fails, we will also fail. If our country disappears, we will also disappear. I was shocked to read that, this year alone, 60,000 Ukrainian soldiers deserted from war with Russia. They said it’s because fighting was too difficult, and it was easier to be captured as a deserter and live in prison. They are holding on with military supplies from the west, including South Korea, but it is not far until Ukraine is overtaken as well. What country would send its young people to protect a country that its own citizens are fleeing from? When a major American broadcasting station reported as their top news ‘Martial Law in Korea!’ I was worried on one hand, on the other hand, I was embarrassed. Still, we shall pray. It is time that we must truly pray for our country. We proclaim prayer martial law. So that we can just be still and pray…
