일본인들이 관상용으로 즐겨 기르는 물고기 중에 ‘코이(koi)’라는 잉어가 있습니다. 이 물고기는 작은 어항에 넣어두면 2~3인치 밖에 자라지 않습니다. 그러나 아주 커다란 수족관이나 연못에 넣어두면 6~10인치까지 자랍니다. 그리고 더 놀라운 사실은 강물에 방류하면 3~4피트까지 성장한다고 합니다. 이렇게 같은 물고기인데도 어항에서 기르면 피라미와 같이 작은 물고기에 머물 수도 있고, 강물에 놓아기르면 대어로 성장하기도 하는 신기한 물고기입니다. 이처럼 코이는 자기가 숨 쉬고 활동하는 환경, 소위 ‘노는 물’에 따라 그 크기가 달라집니다. 사람 또한 매일 만나는 사람들과 주변 환경, 그리고 생각의 크기에 따라 자신이 발휘할 수 있는 능력과 꿈의 크기가 달라지는데 이것을 ‘코이의 법칙’이라고 합니다.

물고기(익투스: ΙΧΘΥΣ)는 로마 박해 시대에 그리스도인의 신원을 확인하는 암호이자 예수 그리스도에 대한 믿음의 사람들의 신앙고백을 상징했습니다. 그리스어의 예수(Ιησουζ), 그리스 (Χριστοζ), 하나님(Θεου), 아들(Υιοζ), 구세주(Σωτηρ)의 첫 글자를 모으면 ‘익투스 (ΙΧΘΥΣ)’, ‘물고기’ 라는 단어가 되었기 때문입니다. 이를 통해 ‘예수 그리스도는 하나님의 아들이시며 구세주이시다’라는 신앙고백을 했던 것입니다. 우리 역시 이 고백으로 예수님 없이 살아갈 수 없는 물고기, 익투스(ΙΧΘΥΣ)라고 할 수 있겠지요.

우리에게도 ‘코이의 법칙’처럼 ‘은혜의 법칙’이 적용됩니다. 하나님께서는 늘 우리에게 한없는 은혜를 부어 주시기 원하시지만, 내 생각과 고집의 작은 어항 속에서 갇혀 있다면 그저 자라기를 포기한 작은 물고기일 뿐입니다. 우리가 얼마나 간절히 주의 은혜를 사모하며 그 은혜의 자리에 함께하느냐에 따라 우리의 믿음의 크기도 달라질 수 있습니다.

여러분은 요즘 어느 물에서 놀고 계시는지요? 혹시 아직도 안락하고 작은 어항 속에 머물러 있지는 않으신지요? 아니면 크신 하나님의 품 안에서 주의 은혜를 마음껏 누리며 헤엄치고 있으신가요? 우리는 이미 온 세대가 나와 주의 은혜를 구하며 함께 기도했던 베델의 헵시바 일천을 통해 하나님의 크고 위대하심을 맛보았습니다. 누구라도 이 은혜와 감격을 놓치지 않으셨으면 좋겠습니다. 오는 토요일인 10월 7일에 있을 ‘헵시바 일천 앙코르’에서 우리 안에 있는 모든 근심, 걱정 다 내려놓고 주의 은혜의 강물에 빠져 다시 한번 신나게 놀아 봅시다.

Water they play in is different!!

There is a carp called ‘koi’ that Japanese people enjoy raising for decorative purposes. In a small fish tank, this fish will grow only to about 2-3 inches. But in a large aquarium or a pond, it will grow to 6-10 inches. What’s even more amazing is that, in a river, it will grow to 3-4 feet. Even though they are the same fish, they can remain in the size of a minnow in a fish tank. When set free in a river, it will grow to become a giant fish. According to the environment of the ‘water they play in’, koi’s size changes. Similarly, according to people we associate daily and our environment, scale of our thoughts, ability, and dreams change. We call this the ‘Koi’s Law’.

Fish(ΙΧΘΥΣ) was a secret sign to identify Christians during Roman persecution. It is also a confession of faith for Jesus Christ. First letter of the Greek words for Jesus(Ιησουζ), Christ(Χριστοζ), God(Θεου), Son(Υιοζ), Savior(Σωτηρ) spells the word ‘fish’. This is how they confessed their faith that ‘Jesus Christ is the Son of God and Savior’. We also confess that we are fish(ΙΧΘΥΣ) that cannot live without Jesus.

Like ‘Koi’s Law’, we have the ‘Law of Grace’. God desires to pour limitless grace upon us. However, if we are trapped in a small tank of our own thoughts and stubbornness, then we are just a small fish that has given up on growing. According to how much we desire God’s grace and want to be in the place of grace, scale of our faith could change.

Which water are you playing in now? Are you comfortable just to remain in a small fish tank? Or are you swimming to your heart’s content in the bosom of our Lord enjoying His grace? We have already tasted God’s greatness as multiple generations sought and prayed together for His grace during Hepzibah 1000. I do not want anyone to miss out on God’s grace as He moves our hearts. This coming Saturday, 10/7, is ‘Encore Hepzibah 1000’. Why don’t we let go of our worries. Let’s fall into the river of God’s grace and enjoy together.
