뜨거웠던 여름 사역들이 마무리되고 있습니다. 귀여운 아이들의 행복한 웃음과 찬양 소리로 가득했던 교회학교 VBS와 감동이 어우러졌던 소망부 VBS. 열정이 넘쳐나는 공동체를 경험한 BYM과 CIM 청소년들의 수련회. 아이들과 청년들, 장년들이 세계 곳곳을 누비며 그리스도의 복음을 전한 아웃리치의 발걸음까지. 베델인으로서 교회의 귀한 사역들을 경험하며, 그 은혜의 현장에 함께한 것은 정말 소중하고 감사한 기회였습니다.

저에게는 하나님의 때를 따라 내게 주어진 기회를 소중히 여기는 계기가 있었습니다. 교회에서 고등부를 졸업하고 대학부를 간 뒤 늘 그랬듯 예배하고 열심히 섬기며 참여했습니다. 하지만 군대를 간 사이, 당시 제가 다니던 교회는 새 성전을 완공했고 제대를 한 후 돌아온 교회는 이상하게도 어색하게만 느껴졌습니다. 그토록 소중히 여기던 사역들은 다른 사람들로 채워져 빈틈없이 진행되고 있었고, 더 아름다운 장소와 구성진 모습으로 드려지는 예배에는 왜 주눅이 들었는지. 마치 내가 없어서 교회가 더 잘되는 것 같은 어리석고 미성숙한 생각에 사로잡혔습니다. 마침 친구가 다니는 교회에서 찬양팀을 도와줄 수 있겠냐는 부탁에 한 번 발걸음을 옮긴 것이 2년이나 모 교회를 떠나는 계기가 되고 말았습니다.

목사님과 지체들의 권유로 다시 모교회로 돌아간 후 그때만 누릴 수 있는 대학부 시절은 너무나 아쉽게도 빨리 끝나 버렸습니다. 한 주, 또 한 주의 예배와 수련회, 아웃리치, 우리만의 행사와 추억들. 친구 교회의 예배를 도와준 것도 가치 있는 일이었지만, 시간이 지날수록 진한 아쉬움이 남는 대학부 시절이었습니다. 그리고 저에게 귀한 교훈을 주었죠. ‘지금 내게 주어진 은혜의 기회를 놓치지 말자! 경험하자! 그리고 누리자!’

지금 우리에게 주어진 은혜의 기회는 무엇입니까? 주일예배의 현장에서 그 은혜를 누리고 계십니까? 셀목장에서 주시는 풍성함을 기대하십니까? 베델제자훈련의 소중한 기회를 잡으셨습니까? 헵시바 일천 운동의 주인공으로, 새생명축제에 VIP를 작정해서 소망을 품고 기도하고 계십니까?

나와 우리 공동체에 주시는 은혜는 늘 새롭습니다. 그것은 다른 표현으로 하자면, 이번 은혜는 이번으로 끝이 난다고도 말할 수 있는 것입니다. 하나님은 지금 우리에게 가장 맛있고 건강해지는 식탁을 차려 주셨습니다. 너무 좋다고, 너무 감사하다고, 너무 맛있겠다고 하면서 직접 먹어보지 않으면 그 맛은 모릅니다. 내가 그 자리에 앉아 숟가락을 들고 먹어봐야 맛을 압니다. 그 깊고 진한 맛을 함께 경험하는 모든 베델인들이 되시길 소망합니다.

The Proof is in the Pudding

Passionate summer ministry activities are coming to an end. Our church school’s VBS programs were filled with cute children’s happy laughters and praises. Hope ministry’s heart moving VBS, BYM and CIM’s retreats made youths experience the passionate community. There were footsteps of outreach by children and young adults to adults who traveled the world to spread the gospel. As Bethel members, it was truly precious and thankful opportunity for us to experience and to be in that place of grace through these ministries.

There was a time when I realized just how precious these God given opportunities, which come at precise moments, could be. After graduating high school, I moved on to college group at church and continued to worship and serve as I always did. While I was in military service, the church completed building a new sanctuary. When I returned from the military service, the church felt strange and uncomfortable. Ministries I cherished were filled with new people and ran smoothly. I don’t know why, but I felt intimidated by the well-orchestrated worship in the new beautiful sanctuary. I was caught up by my immature thought that the church was doing better without me. Just then, a friend asked me to serve in a praise team at his church. That led me to leave my home church for 2 years.

Through encouragements from pastor and home church members, I returned to my home church to rejoin the college ministry. I could only enjoy for remaining college years. Regretfully, it was pretty short. There were weekly worships, retreats, outreach, memories and events that were exclusively for the group. It was worthwhile helping out a friend’s church. However, as I spent time at my home church’s college ministry, I was left with deep regret for missing out during my absence there. I learned one lesson, “Don’t let go of the opportunity of grace that is given to you! Experience it! Enjoy it!”

What opportunity of grace is given to you currently? Are you enjoying the grace of Lord’s Day worship? Do you expect to have fulness of grace that comes from the cell community? Are you taking the opportunity of Bethel Discipleship Training? Are you taking a lead in Hepsibah 1000 and praying for your designated VIP for New Life Celebration?

Blessing of grace for me and our community is always refreshing. In another words, a blessing of grace ends with a given opportunity. God has laid out a table with the most delicious and healthy meal for us now. We may say we are happy, thankful, and will enjoy the meal. However, you will never know the taste unless you actually eat the meal. I physically need to sit, lift my spoon to eat in order to know the taste. I hope that all Bethel members will experience this deep flavorful taste of His grace.
