Goal is Important

LA Rams, who won the Super Bowl last year, lost a game to Seattle last week. They were shut out of this season’s playoffs with poor record. There are already talks about Sean McVay’s position as a head coach. When Rams won the Super Bowl last year, McVay was praised as the NFL’s youngest head coach to lead a team to win Super Bowl. But now, in one year, things have taken a 180 degree turn. His place at LA Rams has become unclear. This team appeared like a comet and brought a whirlwind of football to LA, a city that was for a long time without pro football team. People are analyzing how this winning team could, within a year, not even make it to the playoffs. Since winning the Super Bowl last year, Coach McVay married his wife from Ukraine. The war between Russia and Ukraine was emotionally difficult for him. And, his grandfather, his emotional support, passed away causing more heartache. Analysts have mentioned that these things could have been the factor. Another interesting analysis is that he received many proposals from sports broadcast stations to become a football commentator. Football head coach must be focused. But he was tempted to take on a more comfortable career as a commentator. He became the Rams’ head coach in 2017 at age 31. Each year he improved the team’s record until last year when they won the championship. Another analysis is that he has accomplished his personal ambition. He no longer had a goal to reach, losing his ability to focus on the game.

In a society where our values are determined by our records, having accomplished the best and when there are no more goals to reach, we are faced with despair and discouragement. It’s like someone with a Messiah syndrome. You proclaim “it is finished” and then let go of everything. However, we are not Messiah. Football is just a game. Whether you win or lose this year, the game will begin again next year. Winning is not the peak of your life. You don’t put your life on the line for it. Life continues on regardless of winning or losing a game. Winning could encourage you to win more. If you win twice, there are other challenges like 10 consecutive wins, which we have not seen in the history of pro football. We will not accept the analysis of poor performance as an excuse for not having a goal to reach after one win.

I heard the news that Justin Turner who played with LA Dodgers for last 9 years has signed a contact with Boston Red Sox and is moving. Justin left a SNS message for all of his disappointed fans. He thanked Dodger’s fans. He was also full of hope and expectations for his new journey. Fans were disappointed, but much support and cheers are sent as he embarks on a new journey.
