Reflecting on Our First Sunday at Bethel Church
Rev. Moses Hwang
At last, the day had come—our first Sunday at Bethel Church! On Saturday night, I went over the next day’s schedule with our children and gave them a few final reminders—perhaps a little more firmly than necessary. Since it would be our family’s first time greeting the entire congregation, I could not help but feel a little nervous. The first challenge, of course, was simply getting everyone up early enough for the first service. We went to bed with excitement, anticipation, and just a touch of nervousness.
At 5:00 a.m., the alarm announced the beginning of a new day. Leaving the children with my wife, I headed out alone into the darkness for the pastors’ prayer meeting at 6:00. When I pulled into the Vision parking lot, several cars were already there. The shuttle volunteers welcomed me with bright smiles. I wondered how anyone could look so cheerful that early in the morning, but after a few warm exchanges, I was already on my way to church. Everything still felt unfamiliar, but I had determined to act as naturally as possible. So I walked into the pastors’ office as though I had done it a hundred times before. After greeting the pastors, I followed one of life’s timeless rules: when you do not know where to go, follow the person in front of you. That led me to the courtyard, where the pastors gathered in the early morning darkness to pray for the worship services and for the congregation. Watching them pray, one thought quietly rose in my heart: “This really is Bethel Church.” After prayer, I followed the irresistible aroma of coffee to the café, where more volunteers were already prepared to serve. Their warm smiles seemed to brighten the still-dark morning. Then the first service began. As I stood before the congregation for the first time, I was reminded once again that God’s people are among the most beautiful sights one can see from a pulpit. Looking at their faces, my heart filled with gratitude and anticipation for the days ahead. Those greetings continued from the first service all the way through the fourth.
The fragrance of service that began in the parking lot seemed to be everywhere—in the courtyard, the children’s ministries, the kitchen, the café, and every corner of the sanctuary. Seen and unseen, countless faithful hands were once again making Sunday worship possible.I met more unfamiliar faces that day than I can remember meeting in such a short time. And yet, strangely, they did not feel unfamiliar. Perhaps it was because, in those unfamiliar faces, I caught a glimpse of a familiar face. The face of Jesus. And so our family came home from our first Sunday at Bethel having encountered, in a new and unfamiliar place, the One who has never been unfamiliar to us.
