한마디로 ‘대박’이었습니다. 너무 놀라서 저절로 박수를 치고, 너무 웃겨서 저도 모르게 박수를 치고, 최고의 무대 퍼포먼스에 감격하여 기립 박수를 친 ‘대박’이었다고 말씀드리고 싶습니다. 기도도 잘하는 교회지만, 노는 것도 잘 논다는 얘기를 듣고 싶었는데, 정말 우리 교회는 예배도 최고이고, 같이 노는 것도 급수가 있고 하이 퍼포먼스로 웃을 줄 아는 교회임을 증명한 한마당의 축제였습니다. 저는 우리 교회가 세상 돌아가는 일에 관심을 갖고 특히 어려운 재난 지역이 생기면 발빠르게 움직이는 교회로 정평이 나 있지만, 내적으로 ‘우리끼리’ 재미있는 시간을 갖는 것은 너무 지루하다는 평판을 받을까 봐 “밖으로 돕는 것만 잘하지 말고, 우리끼리 노는 것도 잘해 봅시다” 얘기하면서 내심 걱정했는데, 진행팀은 우리끼리 노는 한마당을 국제적인 마당으로 넓혀서, 선교 현장의 선교사님들과 함께하는 추수감사절 축제를 했다는 것은 큰 의미가 있다고 생각했습니다.

미국의 명절은 가족들과 친지들이 모여서 풋볼을 보는 것이 전통이라 할 수 있습니다. 그래서 해외 파견된 군인들도 명절은 쉬면서 풋볼 경기 중계를 해 주는데, 우리 교회는 명절 행사를 선교 현장과 연결해서 선교사님들과 같이 즐기는 축제가 된 것이 참으로 기뻤습니다. 물론 매년 꼭 그럴 필요는 없지만, 2023 감사절 축제는 국제적인 축제로 방점을 찍었다는 것에 감사를 드립니다.

그 어느 때보다 축제를 준비하는 열기가 뜨거웠다고 목장 담당 목사님들이 전해 주었습니다. 베델 미디어팀은 한 주 동안 거의 잠을 못 잤다고 할 정도로 각 목장에서 미디어를 이용한 신선한 아이디어들이 많았고, 구성이나, 발표 실력 등은 그랑프리 수준의 무대였습니다. 가끔 비행기 기내 영화에서 수상한 영화 카테고리가 있는데, 베델 감사절 8개의 작품은 수상한 작품들만 골라보는 감동이 넘쳤습니다.

또 하나, 이번 감사절 축제의 백미는 패자는 없고 모두 승자였다는 것 입니다. 1, 2, 3등을 가리는 방법도 모두 자기의 셀폰으로 세 팀을 추천하는 방법으로 다 참여했다는 것과 상품의 서프라이즈는 모든 팀이 동일한 상품을 받아, 상품 전부를 공평하게 선교지로 보내는 것이었습니다. 물론 1, 2, 3등을 객관적으로 우열을 가릴 수 있었는지 몰라도 모든 성도들은 JM을 2등으로 뽑았고, 1등은 가장 어른들이 많이 참여한 팀에게 돌렸다는 것도 세상의 방법을 넘어, 같이 웃고 기뻐하는 윈윈 점수를 주면서 관객의 우수성을 보여준 것이었습니다. 그냥 ‘잘~ 놀자’ 하고 시작했는데, 베델은 노는 것도 은혜 대박이었습니다.

Thoughts from Bethel Thanksgiving Celebration

In one word, it was ‘awesome’. We all applauded because it was such a surprise. It was so entertaining that we clapped spontaneously. The best performance brought us to our feet in standing ovation and it was just ‘awesome’. We are a praying church. We also wanted to be known as a church that plays well together. Truly, our worship service is one of the best. If there ever was a level in playing together, this celebration event certainly proved that we are a church that can execute and laugh with high performance. Our church has a deep interest in what’s going on in the world. We have reputation of moving quickly to help those areas that have been hit hard with disasters. In fear of reputation of being boring playing together ‘just us’, I was worried that “we shouldn’t just do well with supporting others, but we should also play well together”. The event organizing team has taken our celebration to an international level by bringing missionaries to celebrate with us from their mission fields. I think this is truly meaningful.

It’s an American tradition to watch football games with gathering of relatives and friends on holidays. Even the deployed soldiers take a break to watch a football game being broadcasted. It was such a joy that our church took this holiday celebration to connect with missionaries in their mission fields to celebrate together. It may not be this way every year, but I am thankful that our 2023 Thanksgiving celebration was an international celebration.

All pastors conveyed that all pastoral communities were passionate in preparing for the celebration than any other time. There were many fresh ideas in ways to utilize media on stage, making the media team to work overtime. Composition and performance ability was that of grand prix level. There is an award-winning movies category to watch when you are on airplanes. Eight performances on Bethel Thanksgiving were much like I was watching only the award-winning performances.

One other thing is that this Thanksgiving celebration had no losers but only the winners. The way we selected the top 3 was done by everyone’s cell phone voting for 3 teams. Everyone had a chance to participate in voting. Surprise was that all teams received the same prize.These prizes were equally divided and sent to mission fields. Of course, top 3 teams were chosen by their performances. JM team was voted second place. The team with the most seniors received first place. This was beyond the worldly methods but showed excellent audience by giving all teams win-win scores that made them laugh together. We started with the notion to ‘play well together’, but Bethel Thanksgiving Celebration was awesome time of grace.
