Happy Resurrection!

Resurrection Day Greetings

Rev. Bryan Kim

On this Study Leave, I traveled to a theological school in Yangpyeong, Korea, where I acquired a desk and began research for my thesis. Although it seemed like we had to wait a while for spring to give way from this chilly weather, crossing through the Paldang district to the school, alongside the path along the river, I was surrounded by cherry blossoms, forsythias, and canola flowers in full bloom. It was as if all the mountains and rivers were marching towards Resurrection Day. When visiting Korea, I had hardly ever driven myself, but now driving around myself, I have soon gotten familiar with it. The traffic light system is a little different from that of the United States, but I quickly adapted to it. And I’m now used to parking by backing up as well. It is quite fascinating that delicious Korean food is readily available in the neighborhood just by walking out into the street. To my delight, I also found a tasty Jjajangmyeon (black bean noodle) restaurant. Still, now and then, I miss breakfast at Mimi’s Cafe. So, I searched for some Italian restaurants to have some Western American cuisine.

While worshiping together through Bethel’s online worship and hearing the believers pray for my thesis, I am brought back to my senses. This study is personal to me, and yet I wonder if there are any other pastors out there writing papers with the whole church praying for them like this. I often feel like taking it easy. Instead, I put in my best efforts to read from book to book and take the necessary notes for my paper. Truly, I am so grateful to all the believers at Bethel. I would especially like to express my gratitude to Rev. Gab Sihn Chung, who traded pulpits with me to deliver God’s Word. And to Bethel’s pastors, elders, ordained deacons, and our Kwonsa prayer warriors and deacons who are all covering for me in my absence.

There have been several first-time experiences for me here. I saw cherry blossoms in full bloom in Korea for the first time. It is the first time I drove around in Korea since 1988. It is also the first time in my ministry life to take leave during the busy Holy Passion Week and Resurrection Day. While spending the Church‘s busiest season of Holy Week and Resurrection Day in Korea, I had the opportunity to visit and learn from several churches. Despite the difficulties faced by Korean churches after COVID, it is the praying churches that are leading the way for Korea. The empty seats during COVID were now filled with praying believers. God was showing us signs, from church to church, of a new coming revival through this first special prayer meeting for Holy Week and Resurrection Day since we began taking off the masks. It is the signal that God is looking for people of prayer. He is sending a clear message that He is seeking the praying Church. Providentially, the recent news of the Asbury Revival gathered attention and planted a yearning desire for revival in the believers returning to the place of worship.

Dearly beloved of Bethel, I earnestly pray that every family welcoming this Resurrection season will experience the blessings of a revived resurrection faith. May it be as if the door of the grave springs wide and the door of prayer is fully released. I hope to continue meeting with you through the morning video messages. Happy Resurrection!
