지난 월요일(3/17) 이스라엘과 하마스 사이의 휴전(cease fire)이 끝나고 다시 총탄 소리가 들리기 시작했습니다. 러시아와 우크라이나 사이의 전쟁도 종식 시키려고 무척이나 애를 쓰고 있는데 우리를 지치게 하는 뉴스입니다. 인류 역사의 전쟁은 정말 끝나지 않나 봅니다. 역사는 반복한다는 말은 전쟁에 관한 한 진리인 것 같습니다. 전쟁은 멈춘 적이 없는 듯 합니다. 앨빈 토플러는 “1945년부터 1990년까지 2,340주 동안 지구촌에 전쟁이 없었던 시기는 단 3주일뿐”이라고 했습니다. 우리 조국도 엄밀하게 말하면 아직 전쟁 중입니다.

트럼프 대통령이 집권 제2기를 맞이해서 수백가지의 행정명령과 더불어 전쟁을 방불케 하는 일들을 집행하고 있습니다. 베네수엘라 마약 밀매 갱단 238명을 엘살바도르 강제 추방했습니다. 연방법원이 대통령의 행정명령에 제동을 걸고 비행기를 돌리라고 했지만, 이미 비행기는 떠난 상태였습니다. 이에 대한 기자들의 질문에 대통령의 대답은 갱들이 우리나라를 쳐들어온 전시상황이기에 대통령의 권위를 발동해서 (전시는 연방법원 보다 대통령 행정명령이 우선) 마땅히 추방해야 한다고 했습니다. 사실 엄밀히 따져보면 미국은 지금 캐나다 멕시코 그리고 유럽과도 관세 전쟁에 있다고 할 수 있습니다. 과거 1773년에 일어난 보스턴 티 사건도 영국이 홍차에 심한 관세를 매겨 시작된 것을 생각하면, 관세 전쟁은 어제 오늘만의 이야기는 아닌 것 같습니다. 월스트리트 저널은 대서양에서 와인과 위스키 전쟁이 일어났다고 보도했습니다. 술을 먹지 않는 사람들에게는 별 관심 없는 전쟁이겠지만, 술이 있어야 하고, 마셔야 하는 자들에게는 보스턴 차 사건 만큼이나, 심각한 전쟁이 될 것이라 생각합니다.

사실 우리 성도들에게는 눈에 보이지 않는 전쟁이 매일 일어나고 있습니다. 영적 전쟁입니다. 가정 안에서 일어나는 불화와 자녀들과의 갈등, 그리고 생존경쟁의 치열한 일터의 현장에서 일어나는 영적 전쟁도 버거울 정도입니다. 그리고 우리를 더욱 힘들게 하는 것은 교회를 공격하는 악한 영들과의 싸움입니다. 우리는 이 전쟁에 만반의 준비를 해야합니다. 제일 위험한 사람은 이런 영적 전쟁을 느끼지 못하는 자들입니다. 새생명축제를 앞두고 악한 영들이 더욱 교회를 공격해 올 것입니다. 전도를 막는 마귀의 최대 무기는 교회의 평화를 깨는 것 입니다. 성도 여러분, 전시 상황입니다. “마귀의 간계를 능히 대적하기 위해”(엡 6:11) 우리의 생각과 입술로 죄짓지 맙시다. 작은 말다툼에도 영적 평안은 일순간 무너질 수 있습니다. 내가 은혜가 없는데, 누구를 전도해서 교회로 인도하겠습니까? 믿음의 용사들이여, 일어나라!!

Even the New Life Celebration is a Battle

This past Monday (3/17/25), the cease fire between Israel and Hamas ended. Sounds of gun fire started again. We are also getting tired of hearing the news on how everyone is trying hard to end the war between Russia and Ukraine. It seems the wars of human history will never end. I think the saying, history repeats itself, speaks of the truth about war. It seems the battle never ceases. Alvin Toffler said, “Between 1945 to 1990, over 2,340 weeks, a time period when the earth was never at war was only 3 weeks.” Strictly speaking, our mother country, Korea, is still at war.

In his second term, President Trump placed hundreds of executive orders and war-like actions. 238 Venezuelan drug trafficking gang members were forcibly deported. A federal court blocked the executive order. It ordered the plane to turn around, but the plane had already taken off. To reporter’s questions, the president responded that this was a wartime situation where gangs invaded our country. He was exercising his presidential authority (in a war time, a president’s executive order takes precedence over federal courts). Strictly speaking, U.S. is in a tariff war with Canada, Mexico, and Europe. When you think about how Boston Tea Party in 1773 was due to stiff tariff on black tea, the tariff war is not just about today. Wall Street Journal reported that there is a wine and whisky war over Atlantic Ocean. This may not interest those who do not drink but, for those who drink alcohol, this war may be just as serious as the Boston Tea Party.

There are invisible battles raging every day with us believers. They are spiritual battles. Discord in your family, conflict with children, and spiritual battle of survival in your workplace can be overwhelming. And what makes it even harder for us is the fight against evil spirits that attack the church. We must fully prepare ourselves for this war. People who are in most danger are the people who don’t realize this spiritual battle. With the New Life Celebration ahead of us, evil spirits will attack the church. Devil’s greatest weapon in blocking evangelism is to break the peace in church. Dear congregation, this is a wartime situation. Do not sin with our thoughts and lips “that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil” (Eph 6:11). Even a small argument can destroy your spiritual peace in an instant. How can you evangelize and bring someone to church if you don’t have grace? Warriors of Faith, Rise up!!
