기초가 중요하다는 말은 아무리 강조해도 지나침이 없습니다. 기초는 땅 아래 있기에 눈에 보이지 않아 간과할 수 있지만, 기초가 튼실하지 않으면 그 위에 아무리 좋은 것을 세워도 소용이 없습니다. 그래서 스카이라운지 장식은 주춧돌을 다진 후에 하는 일입니다. 가끔씩 들려오는 붕괴되는 아파트, 무너지는 다리 등 기초가 부실해서 일어나는 참사는 처절하고 안타깝기 그지없습니다. 기초의 중요성은 교회도 마찬가지입니다. 영적인 사역들은 정말 눈에 보이지 않아서, 겉으로 드러나는 화려함에 속을 수도 있습니다. 그러나, 눈에 보이지 않는 기초를 다지는 작업은 항상 신년 벽두에 그 진가를 발휘합니다.

우리 교회는 매년 엘리야 특별새벽기도회(이상 엘새)로 한 해를 시작했습니다. 저와 베델의 첫 만남도 엘새였습니다. 10년째 베델의 사역을 돌아보면서 가장 기억에 남을 만한 10대 행사 등 의미 있는 일도 많지만, 실은 이 모든 것을 떠받들고 있는 것은 보이지 않는 기도의 기초라고 생각합니다. 매년 엘새로 시작한 한 해는 기도의 열매로 가득가득 했습니다. 그 누구에게 공로를 드릴 수 없음은 엘새 때 함께 부르짖고 시작한 한 해를 주님께 온전히 맡겨 드렸기 때문입니다. 이 일은 작년에 부인할 수 없는 간절함과 절박함으로 저에게 다가왔고 그래서 신학강좌 때에도, 임직자 선출을 위해서도, 우리는 금식하며 특별새벽기도회로 하나님께 무릎을 꿇었습니다. 행사를 하나 더 하는 것이 결코 아니었습니다. 교회를 더욱 흔들림 없는 기도의 기초 위에 세우고 싶은 단순한 열망 외에는 없었습니다. 그리고 하나님은 그 기도를 들어주셨습니다. 지난 한 해의 영광은 모두 하나님께만 돌려드립니다.

사랑하는 성도들에게 담임목사로써 꼭 이 말씀을 남기고 싶습니다. 엘새와 함께 출발하는 새해는, 한 해를 세우는 건물의 기초 공사였습니다. 우리 모두가 계획하고 꿈꾸고 설레는 한 해를 그 어느 현란함이 아닌 기도의 반석 위에 세우고 싶은 소망 하나였습니다. 처음에는 연중행사이니까 특별한 생각 없이 하던 일 한다는 마음이었지만, 엘새의 은혜를 경험한 저로선 오히려 엘새가 기다려는 지는 시간, 기다려지는 행사가 되었습니다. 컬컬하고 답답했던 마음들이 기도의 외침 속에 성령으로 충만해지고, 사역의 야성들이 살아나는 것을 체험했습니다. 쉼 없이 타고 있다고 믿었던 기도의 불에 기름을 붓듯, 다시 활활 타오르는 영성으로 한 해를 시작하게 되었습니다. 기도는 눈에 보이지 않지만, 건물을 받드는 기초입니다. 기본기에 충실해야 실력이 늡니다. 기본기가 흔들리면 인생의 패전만 거듭할 뿐입니다. 기도는 보이지 않는 건물의 기초와 같습니다. 신앙의 기본기가 튼튼하면 마귀와 싸워 백전백승입니다. 새해는 기도의 자리, 거기에 꼭 있기를 바랍니다. Always be there!!

New Year Foundation Work Completed

No matter how much you stress on the importance of strong foundation, it never becomes an exaggeration. Foundation can be easily overlooked because it is underground. However, no matter how good a building is, it is useless unless there is a strong foundation. Therefore, decorating a sky lounge comes after laying a foundational cornerstone. It’s horrible and frustrating to hear time to time about collapsed apartment buildings and broken bridges from insufficient foundation. Importance of foundation is the same for church. Ministries of spiritual growth are not visible to our eyes. Sometimes we are easily fooled by splendor on the outside that is visible. However, the true value of our work of laying the foundation, that is not visible to the eyes, always shines on the eve of new year.

Each new year begin with Elijah Early Morning Prayer for our church. My introduction to Bethel Church was also during an Elijah Prayer. As I look back on my 10th year of Bethel ministry, there were many memorable and meaningful events, as shown in the Top 10 News. But I think it is the foundation of prayers that held them together. Each year that began with Elijah Prayer was filled with many fruits. We cannot recognize any one person for those works because we cried out together during Elijah Prayer and entrusted the year to God. The need of special prayer came to me last year with undeniable earnest and urgency. That is why we fasted and got on our knees on Special Early Morning Prayers before Theological Seminars event and selection of new lay leaders. This was not just to add another program. It was from a simple desire to lay foundation of prayers to keep our church from swaying. And, God heard our prayers. We give all glory to God for last year.

As a senior pastor, I would like to give you, my beloved congregation, these words. Elijah Prayer that begins the new year is the foundation work to build the year on. There is only one desire. That desire is that all of our exciting dreams for the new year will be built on foundation of prayers and not for some vain glare. In the beginning, the prayer event was carried out without much thought since it was an annual event. But I have experienced much grace at Elijah Prayer, this has now become the time that is much anticipated. My frustrated and anxious heart becomes filled with Holy Spirit as I shout out prayers and experience passion coming alive in me for the ministry. I believe that prayer lamp is always lit. Like pouring oil into a lamp, new year began with spiritual lamp of prayer lighting up with burning passion. Although prayers are not visible, it is the foundation to build on. We improve when we are faithful to basic skills. If we don’t have strong basic skills, we will be defeated. We cannot see prayers. But like a building’s foundation, when our basic skill of faith is strong, we can defeat Satan every time. In the new year, always be there in the place of prayer. Always be there!!
