사람은 잘 안 변한다는 말이 있지만, 예수님을 주로 받는 사건은 그 안 변하는 일이 일어난 엄청난 사건입니다. 잘 안 변한다는 것은 얼굴 모양이나, 신체의 모습이 아니라, 생각의 변화일 것입니다. 인생을 보는 눈과 가치관에 대한 변화는 획기적인 사건이 아니면 좀처럼 변하지 않습니다. 자라온 문화와 교육적 배경에서 누적된 가치관은 나도 모르게 베어 있는 것이기에 기존 체계를 완전히 흔들어 놓는 지진과 같은 사건이 아니면, 생각을 바꾸는 일은 결코 쉽게 일어나질 않습니다. 그러나, 이 글을 읽는 저와 여러분은 이런 변화를 경험한 분들입니다. 예수님을 나의 주님으로 받은 자들이기 때문입니다. 우리 모두는 원래 자기 자신이 주인이었습니다. 그런데, 예수님을 주인으로 받아 드리는 엄청난 일이 생긴 것입니다. 좀처럼 일어나지 않은 일이 일어난 것입니다. 물론 예수님을 주인으로 받는 일이 마음의 결심 한 번으로 180도 변하는 것은 아니었습니다. 과정이 있었고, 지금도 현재 진행형입니다. 분명한 것은 인생의 운전자가 바뀐 것입니다. 인생의 주인이 누구인지 흔들릴 때마다 옛 모습이 재생되는 현상은 있습니다. 그러나, 운전대는 확실히 예수님이 쥐고 계신 것만은 분명합니다. 우리가 명심할 것은 손님석에 앉아서 핸들을 잡고 운전하려는 일은 하지 말아야 합니다. 예수님이 내 인생의 운전대를 잡으신 이후 내가 가고 싶은 곳에 내 맘대로 운전해서 갈 수 없을 것입니다. 처음에는 그것이 전혀 아무렇지도 않고, 갈등도 없다가, 가끔씩 옛날로 돌아가고 싶은 충동이 있을 때, 운전석에 다시 앉고 싶은 마음이 생깁니다. 이런 현상이 일어나는 이유는 내가 운전석에 앉았을 때, 얼마나 길을 헤매고 다녔는지를 망각했기 때문입니다. 나름 재미있었다고 착각하기 때문입니다.

예수님께서 제자들과 마지막 만찬을 하시면서, 지금의 성찬식 기원이 되는 상징적인 일을 하셨습니다. 떡(빵)을 떼어 주시면서, 우리를 위해 깨어지신 자신의 몸이라 하셨고, 포도주를 나누어 주시면서 우리를 위해 흘려 주신 주님의 피라 하셨습니다. 그러면서 주님 다시 오시는 날까지 기억하며 행할 것을 명하셨습니다. 이 기억하라 명령하신 이유는 우리는 잘 잊어 버리는 습관이 있다는 뜻일 것입니다. 그래서 계속 상기시켜 주는 일이 필요합니다. 우리 모두 기억해야 합니다. 평생에 일어나지 않는 일이 우리의 삶 속에 일어났습니다. 예수님을 주로 받은 사건입니다. 어쩌다, 자기도 모르게 일어난 일이 아닙니다. 한순간의 감정에 휩쓸려 아차 한 것도 아닙니다. 가장 진지한 순간에 온전한 마음으로 움직였던 결단이었습니다. 그렇게 해서 지금의 그리스도인이 된 것입니다. 다시 돌아가려고 생각한다면, 마귀에서 완전 속은 것입니다.

Change of Thought

There is a saying that people don’t change much. However, the event of accepting Jesus as Lord is an incredible event that make us change. Things that do not change are not about shape of face or physical appearance, but changes in our thought. Unless it’s a groundbreaking event, the way we see and value our lives hardly changes. Values from the culture we grew up in and our educational background are unknowingly imbedded in us. Unless it’s like an earth-shattering event that completely shakes up our existing system, changing our thoughts does not come easily. However, you and I, who are reading this column, have experienced this kind of change. That is because we have accepted Jesus as our Lord. We were all originally our own masters. But there was an incredible happening of accepting Jesus as our master. Something that rarely happens has happened. Of course, making one-time decision to accept Jesus as master does not give us a 180-degree change. There was a process, and it is still in process. What is clear is that the driver for our lives has changed. Every time we waver about who the Lord of our lives is, our old self resurfaces. However, Jesus has the command of steering wheel. What we need to know is that we mustn’t try to drive while sitting in a passenger side. After Jesus has a hold of our steering wheel of life, we shouldn’t drive and go anywhere we want. At first, that is not a problem nor a conflict. However, sometimes when you have an urge to go back to the old days, we have the desire to take over the driver seat. The reason this happens is that we forget how much we got lost and wandered around when we were in the driver seat. And, we mistakenly thought it was fun.

During Jesus’ last supper with his disciples, he made a symbolic act that became the origin of the communion today. He gave a piece of bread and said that this is his body broken for us. He gave wine and said that this is the blood that was shed for us. Then he commanded them to do this in remembrance of him. His command that we shall remember probably means that we are forgetful. Hence, we must continuously be reminded. We all need to remember. Something that doesn’t happen in our lives has happened to us. It is the event of accepting Jesus as Lord. This doesn’t just happen unknowingly. We were not accidentally swept away by momentary emotion. It was a decision made with our whole heart, at the most serious moment. That is how we became Christians of today. If you were thinking about going back, you are fooled by Satan.
