골로새서 강해 Supreme Jesus 시리즈를 마무리 하면서 만감이 교차합니다. 책을 한권 떼면 책거리를 하는데, 설교 시리즈를 마무리 할 때도 그 비슷한 것을 해야 하나 싶습니다. 옛날 서당 시절에는 학동들이 책 한 권을 다 배우면 음식을 준비하여 훈장에게 고마움을 표하는 행사를 하곤 했습니다. 저의 입장에서는 23번의 설교를 청취하고 은혜의 삶을 누렸다고 고백하는 성도님들에게 물한잔이라도 대접하며 고마움을 표하고 싶습니다. 사도 바울이 골로새 교회에 보내는 편지가 오늘도 우리에게 분명하게 주시는 살아 있는 하나님의 말씀으로 받으며 적용하는 성도님들에게 진심으로 감사를 드립니다. 그런 성도님들이 계셨기에 하나님은 여전히 오늘도 말씀하고 계시는 하나님이셨음을 체험하게 되었고, 저 역시 설교자로서 옛날 고전을 읽는 것이 아니라, 오늘 주시는 하나님의 말씀을 강해하면서 주일마다 시기 적절하게 주시는 ‘하나님’의 말씀을 부인할 수 없었습니다. 그래서 오늘 우리는 골로새서를 마무리 하면서 2000년전 쓰여진 편지가 오늘 생명력 있게 살아서 우리에게 여전히 진리이시고, 삶의 적용이 효율적인 하나님의 말씀임을 믿습니다. 오늘 그 은혜를 새롭게 시작하는 셀모임에서 나누며 진정한 책거리가 되기를 기대합니다.

다음에는 어느 성경을 강해할지 기도하는 가운데 호세아 말씀을 강해하려고 마음을 잡았습니다. 몇 가지 호세아서를 선택한 이유가 있습니다. 첫째는 호세아를 읽으면서 호세아 선지자에 대해 연민의 마음을 떨쳐 버릴 수 없었습니다. 그것은 결혼할 아내가 다른 남자들을 따라가는 여인이었지만, 그럼에도 결혼을 해야 했기 때문입니다. 선지가가 너무 미련하고 바보 같았습니다. 둘째는 호세아 선지자에게 그 결혼을 명하신 하나님이 바보 같기 때문입니다.

팀 켈러 목사님이 [The Prodigal God 탕부 하나님]이라는 책을 쓰셨습니다. 예수님의 비유문 중 가장 유명한 [The Prodigal Son(탕자)의 비유]에서 책제목을 따오면서 가장 어리석게 보이는 분은 탕자 보다는 하나님이었다는 것입니다. 그 어리석어 보이는 하나님이 호세아서 너무도 적나라하게 드러납니다. 그런 하나님을 선포하는 선지자도 바보 같고, 불성실하고 믿음을 저버린 백성들을 여전히 버리지 않고 끌어 안고 있는 하나님 역시 바보 같습니다. 23살 전도사 시절부터 목회를 시작한 세월이 41년입니다. 그런데, 목회는 더 자신을 잃고 바보가 되는 기분입니다. 그런 저를 지금까지 포기 하지 않고 사용하시는 하나님은 더 바보 같습니다. 저는 저의 청사진을 보는 마음으로 그리고 여전히 고멜 같은 우리의 손을 놓지 않고 있는 더 바보 같은 하나님을 보며, 같이 회개하며 매주 말씀을 듣기를 원합니다.

A Biblical Book-Ending Celebration: Preparing for the Next Series

As we conclude the “Supreme Jesus” series through our study of Colossians, a flood of emotions comes over me. It feels somewhat like the tradition of holding a book-ending celebration when a child finishes a book, and I wonder if something similar is appropriate when completing a sermon series. In the old seodang schools, when a student finished learning a book, food would be prepared as an expression of gratitude to the teacher. In that same spirit, I want to offer at least a glass of water to the congregation members who have listened to 23 sermons and testified to living a life of grace, as a small expression of my thanks. I sincerely thank those who receive the apostle Paul’s letter to the Colossians as the living Word of God today and apply it to their lives. It is because of such members that I have experienced God as a living, speaking God. As a preacher, I have realized that I am not merely reading an old text; rather, I am expositing the Word God gives today, and I cannot deny the timely message He provides each Sunday. Thus, as we conclude Colossians, I believe that a letter written 2,000 years ago is still alive, still true, and still an effective guide for life. I hope that in the upcoming cell meetings, sharing this grace will become a true “book-ending” celebration.

As I have prayed about which book of the Bible to study next, I have decided to focus on the book of Hosea. There are several reasons for this choice. First, reading Hosea, I cannot shake a deep compassion for the prophet. He was commanded to marry a woman who would follow other men, and yet, despite how foolish or naïve this seemed, he obeyed. Second, I am in awe of God, who commanded Hosea to enter this marriage, and yet, in doing so, also appears remarkably “foolish.”

Pastor Tim Keller wrote a book called The Prodigal God. Drawing from Jesus’ most famous parable, The Prodigal Son, Keller points out that the one who seems most foolish is not the wayward son but God. That seemingly foolish God is vividly revealed throughout Hosea. The prophet who declares God’s message may appear foolish, yet God continues to embrace a faithless and unfaithful people instead of abandoning them—God is foolish in the best and most beautiful sense. I have been in ministry for 41 years, having begun as a 23-year-old pastor. Ministry often feels like losing oneself and becoming foolish, yet I have learned that the God who continues to use me without giving up is even more “foolish.” As I reflect on my own plans and gaze upon this God, I desire that we repent together and listen to His Word with renewed focus and devotion each week.
