요즘 화제가 되는 스파이더맨 영화가 있습니다. 팬데믹으로 전 세계의 영화관이 문을 닫은지 2년 만에, 비로소 열리면서 시기적절하게 출시된 [스파이더맨-노웨이홈]이 블록버스터 유행을 이끌고 있습니다. 원래 스파이더맨은 1960년대 만화책에 나온 수퍼히어로입니다. 제가 어렸을 때부터 그와 같이 자랐다고 해도 틀리지 않습니다. 그러다가 TV 만화 프로그램으로, 또한 여러 영화로 만들어지면서 사람들의 마음속에 자리 잡게 됩니다. 이야기는 평범했던 피터 파커라는 인물이 방사능에 쐬인 거미에게 물리면서 시작됩니다. 신비한 거미의 능력을 얻게 된 것입니다. 예를 들면 위험을 미리 감지하는 능력이라든지, 평면에 거꾸로 붙어 걸어 다니며 손목에서 강력한 거미줄을 뿜어내며, 빌딩과 빌딩 사이를 날아다니는 초능력을 소유한 사람이 된 것입니다. 맘에 드는 여자에게 고백도 못 하던 심약한 피터 파커는 뉴욕 퀸즈에 살던 평범한 고등학생이었습니다. 부모님은 비행기 사고로 죽고, 삼촌 집에서 얹혀살면서 자신감이 없는 청소년기를 보냅니다. 학교에서 왕따당하던 학생이, 프리랜서 사진작가로 사회생활에도 잘 적응하지 못하고 외로움을 타는 모태솔로로 살다가 거미에 물린 사건은 그의 인생에 대반전이 됩니다. 이제는 가면 뒤에서 스파이더맨으로 활약하며 몰래 좋아하는 여자 친구를 위기에서 구해 주기도 하고, 사회의 악당들을 제거하면서 국민의 영웅으로 변신하게 됩니다. ‘더 큰 힘에는 더 큰 책임이 따른다’는 삼촌의 말을 좌우명으로 삼고, 스파이더맨은 그 신비한 능력을 가면 뒤에서 행사하며 자기의 신분을 감추며 삽니다. 사람이지만, 보통 사람과 다른 초능력의 소유자입니다. 가면을 벗으면 평범한 남자로 돌아가지만, 스파이더 가면을 쓰면 용감하게 악당을 처리하는 초능력의 수퍼히어로가 됩니다.

저는 스파이더맨의 매력이 여기에 있다고 생각합니다. 초능력으로 사람 살리는 영웅적인 일을 하는데, 실제 스파이더맨이 피터 파커인지 아는 사람은 아무도 없습니다. 사람의 심리가 큰일을 하면 사람들이 자기를 알아주기를 바랄 텐데, 피터 파커는 자기가 스파이더맨인 것을 숨기고 계속 남을 살리는 일을 조용히 하고 사라집니다. 웬만하며 자기의 정체를 드러내 놓고, 폼나게 악당을 처리하고, 나라를 구하는 영웅이 될 법한데, 스파이더맨은 자기 정체를 숨기고 그 모든 일을 가면 뒤에서 합니다. 이것이 어쩌면 스파이더맨이 오랫동안 우리 곁에서 사라지지 않은 이유가 된 것 같습니다.

갓맨God-man으로 오신 예수 그리스도는 그런 면에서 스파이더맨과 비슷합니다. 사람이지만 하나님이신 예수님은 결코 자기 영광을 위해 일하지 않습니다. 사람들의 시기와 질투 속에 십자가를 져야 했지만, 12영 더 되는 천사를 부릴 수 있는 분이 털 깎는 자 앞의 어린 양처럼 잠잠하십니다 (마 26장). 한해의 마지막에 서서 자기를 드러내려고 애썼던 날들을 뒤돌아보고 회개하며, 스파이더맨에게서 자기희생의 한 수를 배우기 위해 영화관으로, 아니, 송구영신 예배를 향하여 발걸음을 옮겨보면 어떨까요?

Spiderman vs. God-man

Spiderman movie is a big topic nowadays. It has been 2 years since movie theatres closed doors due to pandemic. As the movie theatres began to open, [Spiderman-No Way Home] was released just in time to lead a way to a blockbuster movie. Spiderman is a super hero that first appeared in 1960’s comic books. It’s probably not wrong to say that I grew up with it. However, this super hero has embraced people’s hearts and has been made into cartoons on TV and many movies. The story begins with an average boy, Peter Parker who was bitten by a spider exposed to radia tion. He receives amazing spider powers. For example, he is able to sense danger before it occurs. He is able to attach himself to vertical surfaces and walk upside down. He becomes a person with super power who can shoot out strong spiderweb from his wrist to fly from building to building. Peter Parker was a high school student from Queens, N.Y., who was too shy to confess to a girl he liked. His parents died from a plane crash. He was a teenager, with low self-esteem, living with his uncle. He was bullied as a student. Even as a freelance photographer, he was not adjusting well to society. He was a loner. But the spider bite incident changed his life. He actively works as Spiderman in secret, saving the girl he had crush on from danger, eliminating evil people from society, and becomes people’s hero. What his uncle said, ‘With great power comes great responsibility’ becomes his motto. He hides his identity while doing amazing things be hind his mask. He is a person but, unlike an average person, he possesses super power. He is normal when his mask is off, but when the mask is on, he becomes a super hero courageously fighting evil.

This is where I find Spiderman’s charm. With super power, he heroical ly saves people. But, no one knows that Peter Parker is the Spiderman. When people do great work, they want to be recognized. But Peter Park er hides his identity as Spiderman, and continues to quietly save people only to disappear. You would think that he would want to reveal his iden tity and fight evil in open and become a hero. But he hides his identity and does everything behind his mask. Perhaps this is the reason why the story of Spiderman did not disappear, and is still around us.

From that perspective, Jesus Christ, who came as God-man, is similar to Spiderman. Jesus, who is a man but also God, does not work for his own glory. He had to carry the cross in midst of people’s envy and jealousy. He who could summon more than 12 legions of angels remained silent as a lamb before a shearer (Matt 26). As we look back on this year, we repent how we struggled to be recognized. To learn self-sacrifice from Spider man, we might head toward a movie theatre. Better yet,
